201--Speech
Today I want you to begin working on a pair of speeches, both addressing the same topic. One, you will imagine the audience is a group of politicians from whom you want money....the other, a group of casual friends at a picnic who you are trying to convnince. Go.

301--Register
Today, I'd like you all to play role reversal. When you speak to me, speak as if I were your best friend. When you speak to other students, speak to them as if they were Dean Bristow.
The question of the day...What is the role of status in society and how does it impact communication?

We're trying to get money out of both groups? Or does the first group just happen to be potential investors and we choose whatever topic we want?

Huh. That mean I gotta call Harkness "sir" if I talk to him?
What kind of status are we talking about? Social? Economic? Or does it not matter?
You're gonna have different ways of communicating with people, depending on your status. Talking up to someone you're probably gonna be a lot more polite and formal. Talking to someone of the same status you're gonna be a lot more casual, more relaxed.

D'anna's wears her clunky dark-glasses and carries her uber huge coffee mug (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v722/no_chocolate/FH/leonismug.jpg) with her, but she's left the ball-cap in her room today. She's never dealt exclusively with politicians, but fund-raisers for charities aren't unfamiliar to her - this assignment is definitely something she can handle. Instead of her normal doodles, she actually writes down a flurry of ideas in her notebook.

"The higher up a person is in society, the more polished and refined their communication is expected to be." D'anna offered before taking a sip of her coffee.
