Library [11/25]

Wesley was researching. This probably wasn't a huge surprise. Something strange was afoot, so he could be found at the front desk, poring over a stack of books several feet high and copying potentially relevant passages over into his notes. It was the Watcher way, damnit.

Ender came in ridiculously early, as was his wont with anything he did - especially something this crucial. He'd made a list of everything that had recurred in people's stories: the emptiness approaching, the people vanishing, the amnesia.

He took the list with him into the nearest aisle, and began to poke around. He wasn't planning to leave without some hint at an answer.

"Find anything yet?" Tara asked, once she spotted the aisle Ender was in. "I tried to research at the shop this morning? But it was, um. Distracting."

"A lot of guesses, a lot of potentials, but nothing solid or fully accurate," Ender admitted. "But we haven't covered much of the library yet."

Tara glanced around the shelves with some trepidation. "Can we cover the whole library? Ever?"

"I think we can give it a spirited try," Ender said, and shot her a wry look. "Unless you're easily disheartened by a lot of books."

"Well, they're scary," Tara said sarcastically. "They're all full of words and ideas."

She gave a tiny smile. "I can start in history, and see if anything like this has happened? I'm, uh, a little burnt out on magic for now."

Ender nodded. "I'm a little leery to tackle the magic books without someone to translate for me," he said, "So let's make the history books a team effort." He held up his note. "See if we find anything matching this description."

"Yeah, if you end up over in magic, don't read out loud," Tara warned, then smiled apologetically at how absurd she was being. "Some spells can, uh ... kind of trigger themselves without intent. So, history."

She glanced at the note, nodded. "I can work with that."

"I'll keep that in mind," Ender promised, and looked back towards the stacks labeled just that. "You start on the left, I'll start on the right."

Tara bit her lip and nodded, then went over into the shelves.

She spent a long time reading about Roanoke Colony, but that was too different in the end from what they were seeing -- the colonists were remembered, even if they were never found. (And the theory some of them died and the rest married into Native tribes sounded far too logical to ignore.)

But then there was the Ninth Spanish Legion. She felt like that might be getting closer, and she pulled a book on it over to a reading stand.
