Criminal Justice, Class 15

[OOC: For the project: Groups of 2 or go it solo. Pick up to three items from the ACME Catalog and come up with a Coyote-esque scheme to capture the Road Runner, preferably alive. It doesn't have to be too detailed or anything. Get it to me in voicemail, office hours, or class thread by Saturday (so I have some time to come up with results) and there will be a Danger Shop post on Sunday detailing the holographic simulation. Show up to that if you can/want to. Oh, and try to abide by the laws in your plan, both societal and natural. In other words, don't count on gravity to stop working all of a sudden (even though it could), and don't use a Disintegrater Gun to kill RR without him being armed. Class Info Post.]

*Tick stood at the podium as usual. He was wearing a tie. He looked slightly more professorly with it. Not that there was any way to go but up...*

Hello, class! Those of you who are new to Criminal Justice, we welcome you! Those of you who are old to this course, well, we welcome you as well, because you shouldn't be left out!

Now, remember, there's a project due this week. In the name of Fairness, I'm changing the due date slightly. Since I doubt anyone has started yet due to Parents Weekend, I'm going to give you until Saturday to hand me your plans to catch the fugitive. The ACME Catalog will be in the class until then, available for your use.

Okay, today's class is going to be a little light so you have time to work on your projects. This topic will be more of a "getting to know you" discussion. Of the three parts of the justice system - the police/superheroes, the courts, and corrections/jail - which one is of the most interest to you and why?

This week's extra credit is tied to the project. Choose at least one ACME product for your project that nobody else is using. This should give more credit to the people who are pushing the limits of their creativity and are trying more unique solutions. There are enough products that nobody should have trouble doing this.

Finally, on a personal note, I wanted to thank you all for the kind words in your evaluations. It's good to know that people dig the Justice Pie I'm serving. That the Coffee of Knowledge that I have been pouring is perfectly caffeinated! Indeed, the best part of waking up is Justice in your cup! Now if only I could figure out why there were twice as many evaluations as there should have been. I suspect... *Tick walked to the classroom door*, "that there might be people at the door listening in!" Tick swiftly opened the door to see nobody there.

"Huh. They're fast. Oh well, we'll get them eventually!"

Was nowhere near the classroom, really.

Marty looks very tired but raises his hand.

"That's a tough one for me. For me in the criminal justice system? Where the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime; and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders? These are their stories. I'd have to go with the police. Because Lenny Briscoe rocks my world."

Janet raises her hand to reply to Marty's statement. "Yeah, the police do the investigation, and that's highly important, but it's the district attorneys and the court system that ensures an arrest is turned into a conviction. The law is a very complicated set of rules, and they do their best to make sure that Justice is served within the bounds of the law--and that no one twists the law for their own gain."

Janet never capitalized Justice before taking this class. She tries not to think about that too much, though.

Jaye raises her hand. "What if the corrections/jail thing interests me most because I like the guy on Prison Break? Does that make me a bad person?"

"I don't have too much experience with any of those, exactly, but I suppose the police/superheroes would be the closest to what I do."

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2005-11-01 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"To me? It would be the police and the superheroes. The courts and the corrections/jail might be as important as the police, but I think there's a sense of satisfaction about knowing that you're out there actively keeping people safe. If crime was the soup, the punishment would be the stomach of Justice and the mouth would be the courts. But the superheroes and the police would be the spoon that bring the crime to the mouth of Justice and spoons are just keen!"

Janet is suddenly hungry.

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-01 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack comes into class towing a little red wagon. Inside the wagon is a life-size replica of the Tick in Legos. Jack walks up to the front of the room, parks the wagon, and presses the button.

From inside the Lego monstrosity masterpiece issues a voice. The voice is the Tick's own. The voice says:

"Professor the Tick! It is I! The Tick! Your humble student comes to beg forgiveness for his absences and stands before you, ready, willing *and* able to perform whatever tasks he is set! Please see fit to not kick him out of class, and assign whatever makeup work is needed. Thank you, from me to you, or you to me. Whichever."

Jack grins.

Janet laughs--and suddenly realizes that Methos wasn't back yet for her to get her absence note from. Damn. At this rate, she's going to have to forge something.

OOC: Hee! Love the legos!

Rory stays quiet in the back, nursing a cup of coffee and dutifully taking notes in spite of the fact that she looks like she hasn't slept, or been happy in the last day.

She's also studiously avoiding looking at Marty.

[identity profile] emo-padawan.livejournal.com 2005-11-01 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Anakin watched Rory, his forehead furrowed with concern.

He finally tossed a note onto her desk.

What's wrong?

Anakin thought for a while, then finally said, "I'd have to say I am most intrigued by the police/superheroes aspect. Probably because it's the closest to what I'm used to."

I'd have to go with the police/superheroes, because if you can avoid them from the start, you're home free! they are the Shovel which feeds the Coal of Evil into the Fires of The Judicial System, leaving only the Ashes of Jail behind!

Jack's ACME Project

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd take Super Speed Vitamins (http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme/supers.html) to run as fast as the Road Runner, then shoot him with Strait-Jacket Ejecting Bazooka (http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme/strait.html) to capture him.

Vala's ACME Project

[identity profile] aka-vala.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I would definitely have to go for the Invisible Paint (http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme/invisible.html), which I'd first use on myself, and then on a nice sturdy cage. Placing Birdseed (http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme/birdseed.html) in the cage as bait, I'd wait until the roadrunner had stepped inside, and then quickly cut off his escape by activating a well-placed Dehydrated Boulder (http://home.nc.rr.com/tuco/looney/acme/dehydrated.html)!
