[OOC: For the project: Groups of 2 or go it solo. Pick up to three items from the ACME Catalog and come up with a Coyote-esque scheme to capture the Road Runner, preferably alive. It doesn't have to be too detailed or anything. Get it to me in voicemail, office hours, or class thread by Saturday (so I have some time to come up with results) and there will be a Danger Shop post on Sunday detailing the holographic simulation. *Tick stood at the podium as usual. He was wearing a tie. He looked slightly more professorly with it. Not that there was any way to go but up...*

Hello, class! Those of you who are new to Criminal Justice, we welcome you! Those of you who are old to this course, well, we welcome you as well, because you shouldn't be left out!

Now, remember, there's a project due this week. In the name of Fairness, I'm changing the due date slightly. Since I doubt anyone has started yet due to Parents Weekend, I'm going to give you until Saturday to hand me your plans to catch the fugitive. The ACME Catalog will be in the class until then, available for your use.

Okay, today's class is going to be a little light so you have time to work on your projects. This topic will be more of a "getting to know you" discussion. Of the three parts of the justice system - the police/superheroes, the courts, and corrections/jail - which one is of the most interest to you and why?

This week's extra credit is tied to the project. Choose at least one ACME product for your project that nobody else is using. This should give more credit to the people who are pushing the limits of their creativity and are trying more unique solutions. There are enough products that nobody should have trouble doing this.

Finally, on a personal note, I wanted to thank you all for the kind words in your evaluations. It's good to know that people dig the Justice Pie I'm serving. That the Coffee of Knowledge that I have been pouring is perfectly caffeinated! Indeed, the best part of waking up is Justice in your cup! Now if only I could figure out why there were twice as many evaluations as there should have been. I suspect... *Tick walked to the classroom door*, "that there might be people at the door listening in!" Tick swiftly opened the door to see nobody there.

"Huh. They're fast. Oh well, we'll get them eventually!"

"Egads! That's terrible, Rory! I'm so sorry."

Tick looked extremely sad. Nobody should have to deal with the loss of a friend. "Is there any chance I could do anything to help?"

Rory bit her lip. "I don't know, sir. I don't think anyone knows where she is, or really what happend to her." Rory frowned. "No one's seen her since Thursday night."

"Do you mind if I ask who she was? Maybe if I knew that, I could get a start..."

Rory blanched. "I'm not supposed to tell anyone, but...I trust you, and she was one of your students. Kitty Pryde."

"Kitty?" Tick looked like... Well, being nigh-invulnerable, the only real comparison he had was that one time a big clown hit him really hard, but that didn't seem even vaguely appropriate right now. The point is, he looked to be in real pain.

"I... You can trust me, Rory. I won't mention it to anyone." The Tick's antennae twitched. "Something tells me that it won't be quiet for very long, though."

Rory shook her head. "I don't think it will either, sir. But I think Alanna - that's who told me, because I was one of the last people to see Kitty - is trying to keep people from flying into a panic. And I don't even know how the dean's going to deal with all of it."

"You said this happened on Thursday?" Tick seemed to realize that the poor girl had been in his class on what was apparently the last day of her life. A superhero who not only couldn't save his own student, but also didn't know she needed saving until almost a week later. He couldn't remember the last time he felt this terrible.

"Alanna... So the school security is already on top of it? Very good. I should check with them, see if I can help somehow."

Rory took a deep breath. "Well, Marty was there too, sir, but...he doesn't remember what happened that night. He had been out walking with me and Vladdie, and...he can't remember what happened."

She crossed her arms around her midsection, suddenly feeling queasy again. "I'm not saying he did it, or anything. I love Marty and he's one of my best friends - but I also think that you might want to make sure you go to Alanna."

"Marty?" The Tick just hung his head. "Yes, I'll talk to Alanna. I saved her life once, you know..."

Tick's head snapped back up. His antennae looked alert. "You said the Dean knows, right? I'm sure he'll talk to the staff about it. I'll wait until he lets us know what's happening. But, Rory, if you need anything... anything I can help you with at all, just let me know."

"Thank you, sir," Rory said, nodding and staring at her hands. "I appreciate it. And I'm sure the Dean'll talk to the staff. The entire school should know by tomorrow, I think."

She shook her head, biting her lip. "I just don't know who would do this."

There was a small but enthusiastic voice in Tick's head that said "I'll find out!" It wasn't loud enough for even Tick to notice yet. "Neither do I. Are you going to be okay? Right now, I mean. Relatively speaking."

Rory nodded and looked up, managing a smile. "I'll be fine. I found out last night, and I took it pretty hard then, but...I've had a few hours to adjust to the idea."

"That's understandable." Tick took a breath. "Thank you for telling me. I don't know how I would have reacted if I had found this out from someone else. Death and I aren't exactly familiar with each other."

"You're a good friend, Rory." Tick stood up and patted her on the shoulder as lightly as he could manage.

Rory's smile widened slightly. "Thank you, sir. Um...I'm thinking of organizing a memorial this weekend, once everyone knows. Would you be interested in speaking?"

"Of course I would. Anything for Kitty." Tick paused. "Err, about how long should I talk. Um, because I have a tendency to get kind of wordy in front of crowds. If you hadn't noticed."

Rory almost laughed. "Yes, sir, I've noticed that. It's not a bad trait, though. Um...speak for however long you think is appropriate. I would say to keep it under ten minutes, though."

Tick smiled a little. "Under ten minutes. I should be able to manage that."

Realizing that this was probably the most cheerful he'd be able to make Rory - and that his brain probably needed some quiet time to sort this all out - he said, "I'll let you get on your way, Rory. I don't want to hold you up too long."

Rory lifted half her mouth in a lopsided smile. "Thanks, sir. I'll see you Thursday, then. Take care, sir."

"You too, Rory. Take care," he said, emphasizing the last two words.

The Tick sat in his classroom alone. He started reading one of the books in the room. There didn't seem to be anything else to do at the moment.
