Aesthetics of Badassery [Monday, Period One]

"Good morning." Bond was leaning on his desk as the students entered the classroom. "I realise it's early and a Monday to boot so there's coffee and pastries and if you're not actually signed up for Aesthetics of Badassery you can take them with you."

He waited a moment for the class to get themselves organised. "Now onto the class itself. We'll be covering several different subjects over the semester, but one that we will no is the classic movie cliché of making quips after committing acts of violence. Any thug can kill, any psychotic can joke about it after, but neither of those things in and of themselves makes you bad, though they probably will make you an arse. Quite frankly the single scariest person I've ever met, the one person who I would never want to seriously cross, is a five-foot grandmother from Yorkshire, who could have me killed for simply telling you that much about her." So Bond would appreciate it terribly if no one ever mentioned that he had to M. "Make no mistake, there will be fighting covered in this class, but it won't be the only thing, and hopefully by the end of semester you will know how to look, think, and dress like real life badasses."

"But that's all for later classes, this week all I want from you is your names, class, and what the concept of badassery means to you."

"And finally, since I need a TA..." Bond ran his finger down the roster. "Congratulations, Bobby."

The worry about the class subject besides, Bobby was totally excited about this class with some of his friends! And Jack! And donuts!

Name, class, what you think makes a badass.

"I'm Bobby McCallister," he introduced himself. "I'm a sophomore, and I'm really not badass - um - or anything like that at all. Everyone else here is much more cool."

Well, Bond could fix the 'not badass' part...possibly. "Welcome, Bobby. So it's a matter of coolness?"

"Weeeeell," Bobby bit his lip as he slid a sidelong glance towards his brother. "I don't know if it's just a matter of coolness, but you have to be cool to be a badass."

Hmm, maybe Bond could just get Rose to help him next time she visited the island? Yes, that would work. "Or is it the other way around and being a badass makes you cool?"

"I guess it could work that way too..." Bobby agreed. "But I think you have to be one or the other first. And I'm not really either."

Good luck with that, Mr. Bond. Rose might just die of laughter.

Bond just had to find the right way to present he task to her! Make it a challenge.

"We have the rest of the semester to work on that."

"I'll do my best," he promised. He could run fast...he was getting taller...maybe there was some hope left.

Jeremy was one of those people who sometimes managed to look decidedly hungover just by the power of the first post-break Monday morning alone, without having had a drop to drink. He was cradling a cup of coffee, oh yes he was.

"Jeremy Darling," he introduced himself, suppressing a yawn. "Junior. And I think a badass... It's not a quality you can pin down. It's a state of mind, man. Either you have it or you don't."

Or something. God, he was so tired.

"That's a very Zen way of looking at the subject, Jeremy." Bond made a note to have stronger coffee next time.

"I'm Jacob Black. I'm a Senior... And I guess I think someone's badass when you know they can kick your ass without ever having to prove it."

Or something. "I guess it's attitude as much as it is the ability to do it."

Bond nodded. "Can you still be a badass if you're actually bluffing?"

Caroline was far too excited for a Monday morning at whatever early hour contained first block. She smirked at the group. "Hi, I'm Caroline, but you all know that already and if you've forgotten, well shame on you. I'm a junior this year - and don't think I won't be counting on your StuCo vote, Jeremy - and I think to be a true badass, you have to believe you're better than everyone else." A quality she possessed in spades, hmm. "And maybe prove it by kicking their asses from time to time."

Bond wasn't smirking, but only because he had a very good poker face. "I take it you know this from experience?"

"Well, the only people I've ever thought were badass were people I thought could kick my ass, so it's only logical, right?" Sorry to all the boys in the room, oops?

See Bond, see Bond not laugh through sheer willpower."I can't argue with the logic there."

"Jack McCallister," he introduced himself. "I'm a senior. Badassery," Jack added, feeling weird that it was okay to say that in class, "is about confidence and having the skills and opportunity to use your confidence."

Bond smiled. "Very good answer, confidence plays a very big part in appearing to be a badass."

Both of whom are terribly badass.

Bobby was a total badass at the chess board...

"TA, huh?" Why yes, Jack was amused.

"I tried to talk him out of it!" Bobby protested instantly.

"When you call Mom and have to explain the class, I want to be there."

"You could tell her!" Bobby said hopefully. "She'd rather hear about your classes and college applications and stuff."

"There are plenty of times I'll be the go between for you and Mom. When it's funny doesn't qualify."

"Fine." Bobby made a face. "But you have to be there on Parents' Weekend when she freaks out about the implied violence being taught."

"When am I not there on Parents Weekend making sure she doesn't drag you back to Hart?"

"If there's any dragging, I don't think you're going to escape."

"Getting to finish school in Hart wouldn't require dragging."

"We could go," Bobby offered tentatively. "Classes just started..."

"Don't be stupid. I didn't say I didn't want to finish school here."

Badass no longer looks like a word.
