Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

JacK had his name tag on his shirt and was eyeing the crowd trying to figure out which one was his little sib.

As it so happened, that would be the blonde girl in the fancy dress, struggling once more with the discovery that there really was no good place to put a nametag when wearing a fancy dress. One would think the practice she'd had earlier for all those Parents' Weekend visits would be helpful, but Rosella was once again relegated to looking at it with a sigh, crumpling it up, and tossing it in a nearby bin. She supposed she'd just have to stick to introducing herself the old fashioned way, by speaking to people.

Going on a hunch (Jack was good at hunches) he spotted the girl in extravagant outfitvand guessed that had to be his sib.

"Rosella?" he asked as he approached her.

Well, she was trying to get the nametag into the bin, anyway. It seemed to not want to let go of her fingers, but the sound of her name distracted her from the troublesome task enough to lift her eyes and feel validated.

"Ha!" she said. "I knew those pesky nametags shouldn't be necessary. Yes, I am Rosella; who are you?"

He was an unknown boy, and therefor immediately a matter of suspicion and distaste.

"Jack Carter," he said offering his hand for a handshake. "I'm your new big brother."

He paused for a second before adding: "but not your actual big brother. I'm just here to help you find your way around Fandom."

Rosella gave the nametag a few more tries, but still to no avail. She tried using her other hand, only succeeding in transferring the sticky label over. She made a face, partly at the sticker, partly at Jack Carter.

"Ah, yes," she said. "The sibling thing. You had to be a big brother, didn't you? I've already got a brother; it would have been much nicer to have had a sister. I've never had a sister before."

"Here, let me help you with that," Jack said reaching for the name tag. "And if it helps my mom always wanted me to be a girl. I've also been told I scream like one."

"No, no, no!" Rosella insisted, pulling her hand back and looking at Jack as though she might have to make him scream like a girl if he tried to help her any further. "I've got it just fine, thank you! It's just a bit...persistent, that's all."

Her hand quickly went to her side, where she imagined any sort of gentleman wouldn't dare reach for it and, more importantly, where she could try to dislodge the thing by wiping it against the detailed embroidery there.

Jack shrugged it off. After dealing with multiple eccentric scientists over the past couple of years, Jack wasn't going to make a fuss over a name tag. "Okay, not a problem," he said, " How was the trip in? Did you take the shuttle?"

"Oh, yes, of course." The words took on an idle quality as Rosella's attentions went into trying to get the tag off her dress now. "It wasn't quite as exciting as I was anticipating, but, by the sounds of it, the excitement would have only come in the form of a terrible crash, so perhaps that's all for the better."

"Yeah, well crashes aren't all that fun so I'll agree with you there," Jack said trying to hide his amusement at his little sib and her name tag issues. "Did anyone try to break your brain before you got to the island?"

"Break my brain?" asked Rosella, looking up distractedly from her efforts to extract the sticker. "How do you mean?"

Off! Off, damn nametag!

"Oh... You know. This island is a bit... Unique. And very weird. "

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Fall 2011]

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, yes," Rosella smiled a little. "Of course. That's why I was so interested in coming here. But do you mean to suggest that I should be wary of the island coming at me and my head with a mallet or say, the broad end of a shovel? I quite assure you, Jack, if it should, I hope it realizes that I fully intend to come right back at it with a shovel of my own."

She liked shovels, okay? They were incredibly useful.

[identity profile] exactlyaverage.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack laughed at that. "Okay, clearly you'll fit in well here," he said, "though I was mostly speaking figuratively. This island can do some strange things, so if someone tells you something weird about the place don't immediately dismiss it because it might be true. Unless it's the guy in the red pajamas. Feel free to ignore him."

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The nametag was quite forgotten now as the conversation took a pleasing turn and Rosella wore the small smirk that she suspected she'd have any time anyone tried to surprise her with information about the island. "Guy in the red pajamas?" she asked. "I don't suppose you mean a teacher by the name of Deadpool, do you?"

And that would be Jack's eyebrows going up a notch before a grin crossed his face. "Well, yeah. That would be him. Should I be asking you about this place? Because I'm thinking you know more than you let on."
