Library [08/05]

Well, Wesley didn't know about anyone else, but he was using his library shift to read up on the considerable oddness that had begun in Fandom this week. For the first time, he was actually having trouble finding anything relevant, which was particularly frustrating given how tall the stack of books he'd already gone through was. In all the books he knew about transferrence of demonic properties, while some did mention turning grey and violent, none of them talked about a big glowing rock.

Still, he kept at it, undeterred.

"While normally I'd commend that level of compassion," Wesley began, "it might be somewhat misguided in this case. Radio reports state that they're quite violent, and I'm afraid I'd feel rather responsible if one of them took your head off."

"...."

"Okay, so, they're afraid of books, right? I can hide here?" Kenzi blinked slowly. "Or somewhere! WHERE IS THE GOOD HIDING?"

"I'd reccomend somewhere off island," Wesley suggested. "Perhaps with a, er, legitimate weapon?"

Those tended to help.

"You mean like this?" Kenzi asked, taking out a big ol' knife from the top of her boots ~~or maybe Miley's boots, we ain't sayin'.~~ "I can totally stick this in a zombie eye!"

Now, that was a nice pair of boots. Kenzi ~~or Miley~~ knew how to pick 'em.

"Oh! Yes, that would certainly do," he agreed. Leaning forward, he inquired, "May I see?"

He totally wanted to guess who made it and what kind of knife it was, yep.

"Sure! I found it in a Common Room cabinet," Kenzi said chattily, putting it down on the counter. She pulled out a switchblade from the other boot. "And this I found inside the cushions of one of the couches. People never check the cushions enough, you know?" See, distraction! Fake weapons, real weapons! Not that she knew how to use either.

Wesley surveyed the weapons, nodding approvingly. Those were... definitely real weapons.

"Standard modern fighting knife," he mused, turning it over. "I reccomend finding some sort of sheath if you intend to be storing it in your shoes."

That was a lesson you only had to learn once.

"But yes, this should do you just fine should you encounter any of the... well." He held up a book. "I don't quite know what to call them, to be honest."

"They're not just zombie?" Kenzi asked, propping her chin up on her hands, looking confused. "But it's just like Don of the Deadheads. Only slower. So I figure we can at least run away fast by the time they're really vicious."

"Well, there are a great many kinds of zombies," Wesley explained, leafing through one of the books on the table and flipping to the table of contents. "You see, just under the zombie heading, there are quite a few subheadings here. Sometimes it's affected by a curse or a mystical totem of some sort, other times by a self-inflicted ritual... there's quite a bit of variation." And sometimes zombies were the result of an evil mask that raised the dead, but let's not split hairs. "Regardless, there have been reports that Fandom students have been affected by whatever this is, and as those students are quite alive, it seems to be a different sort of thing entirely."

This was a lecture that British kids paid good money to hear at the Watchers' Academy! You should be grateful, Kenzi!

"Hunh. Okay, so... We're screwed?"

She was grateful! See? She did a completely unsolicited summary report!

Good job!

"Unless someone can determine a probable cause to what is going on?" Wesley sighed. "I would say yes."

"Gaaah." Kenzi pounded her head on the counter, and looked up at Wes sideways. "I thought it was that rock thing. Bo thought so, anyway." She looked briefly very sad. "'Cause she touched it. But... nothing in the books about zombie rocks?"

Wesley noted the change in expression, but he didn't feel as though he should comment on it.

"Unfortunately not," he said, absently turning pages as though he might stumble upon the answer. "I rather think the rock might be a clue as well, but it doesn't seem to have been recorded in any of these books. A rock to imbue people with demonic properties..." He shook his head. "Did anything untoward happen to B-- er, Ms. Jones?"

Ummm, she tried to do her Sexual Healing and it backfired?... yeah, no, not Oversharing that.

"She touched it when it touched down. She said she got a vibe from it. Like it wanted to..." Mate with everything! "Spread." Cough.

Wesley had to grab a pen to jot that down on a sheet of notebook paper, then glanced up at Kenzi in search of further information. "It wanted to spread," he murmured thoughtfully. "Did she happen to say anything else?"

He was clinging to this information like a crazy clinging thing, yes.

"Umm..." Kenzi frowned, trying to remember what Bo had mentioned. "It felt alive? She didn't say a lot, we were watching a deer tear apart a gremlin on the video feeds." She shook her head. "She said it was like a really bad acid trip when I talked to her at the meeting last night. And that I get her clothes if she turns into a statue." Pout of sadness.

Wesley's eyes went wide for a moment. Surely if the head of security here (...was that her job? He wasn't quite sure) was susceptible to turning into a statue, this was serious.

Then he shook his head to clear that thought from his mind and took a sip of coffee.

"Er," he said. "Yes. Right. Well, I'm sure the school administration will manage to nip this in the bud before that happens."

[[GODDAMNIT, LJ, WHAT WAS THAT!??]]

"You are waaaay more trusting of authority figures than I am, Wes."

In other news: Sky! Blue!

"Anywho. You call me if there's... something I can do." Kenzi looked discouraged. "Want a knife so you get home safe?"

[Cthulu stole the goat. They got him back. And we feasted on his entrails.]

"That'll be all right, but thank you," he replied politely. To provide context, he slid open one of the drawers to his library desk to reveal a hunting rifle.

...Wesley didn't mess around.

"Ooooo!" Kenzi's opinion of her Big Sib had just gone up a good few feet. She finger-gunned him and said, "When we're not in crisis-mode, we are so talking weapons. 'Cause improvising is fun, but surviving is way better."

"I like to think so."

Wesley was a little bit smug, yes. The best part was that he could man that hunting rifle like a boss and he knew it.

"Are you certain that knife is sufficient protection?" he had to ask, with just a lingering bit of smugness in his tone. "If you'll wait until the end of my shift, I could escort you back to the dorms."

And show off his marksmanship? Oh, yes. Now he was just bragging.

Kenzi looked around at the books, then the gun, then said, "What the heck. You guys have trashy romance novels here, right?"

Ohhhh, yeah.

"Just down that aisle to your left," Wesley said with a grin, pointing. "Enjoy!"
