Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Kenzi was wandering now, having gone back for more food, eaten some of it, then decided she needed to get some work in during a shindig like this.

From the back, all she saw of this woman was that it looked like she had a cellphone and maybe keys in her back pocket. Easy attempt, right?

Those pants were really too tight, but she was good! Not that difficult!

Seriously? "Seriously?" Bo asked as she started to whirl around. "All the options in this crowd and you pick the one whose job--"

Blink. BLINK.

Okay, she already had her story ready about how she'd been dared to do this, as a new kid, and c'mon, cut her a break, it was her first day, and--

Kenzi inhaled, eyes going huge, sucking air noise presaging a truly epic scream if someone didn't stop her.

"You--" The girl from the elevator. Minus the bad blonde wig, but not like she could mistake those eyes. Crap. Nonono. "Wait. I can explain. Don't freak out!" Would Bo trying to cover the girl's mouth with one hand help or hinder that request?

Arm-waving! Squeaking! Oh shit she was SECURITY Kenzi was so dead wait why wasn't she already dead wait why was she here?!?! what the fuck what the fuck what the --

The strangled gleeping noise was Kenzi trying to ask for an explanation while trying to get away while trying to make it clear that she was not buying any bullshit, thank you!

Right, go for the explanation she'd been planning to give if the kid woke up before she'd got out of Dodge, back in that Canadian town that wasn't named Dodge. Good plan?

"A jerkass at the bar slipped something in your drink, you remember that? Nod once for no and twice for yes."

GULP. GULP. Nod twice. Yes. Mr. Smiley. Mr. DEAD Smiley.

Not that she wasn't, you know. Grateful for that.

"I noticed him following you and interrupted before he could do anything, but you were waaaaay out of it. Probably hallucinated some really weird stuff, from what you were mumbling."

Bo loosened her fingers. "One nod for no, I will not freak out and scream if Bo takes her hand off my mouth, two for... just nod once, please."

Kenzi nodded again, eyes narrowed, because, bitch. PLEASE.

Although, yes, she was calmer now because hi, big crowd of people, Bartend-- Bo, couldn't suck the life out of her right in front of people, and, well, yeah. Not raped, not dead, not creepily messed up, and she owed the chick. Maybe.

"I'm Bo. Not that you couldn't have got that by process of elimination. I'd greet you by name, but none of the I.D.s I found on you when I got you out of there were yours." She carefully unwrapped her hand, looking a little wary still herself, because what was the kid doing here.

Which, okay, fine was... fair. Kenzi took a breath. Then another. "Are you stalking me?" she blurted out. Then, "I woke up in a freaking rat-trap and thought I'd been abducted! Not cool!"

"Stalking you? I've been here for two months! What're you doing here?"

"Freaking social services," Kenzi grumbled, since Bo-the-Killer-Zombie- Bartender might be able to sniff that she was lying or tell by the shine of her eyes or body posture or who the hell knew what else. "Said I needed a 'new environment.' Said it was this or juvie." A pause. "I just found those wallets. I collect rare wallets, that's all."

Man, she was really off her game here.

"Uh-huh. Like mine?" Bo rolled her eyes. "Whatever, I'm not judging unless you're doing it here. Where it's kind of my job to stop you. You really didn't follow me here on purpose?"

Because that was a hell of a coincidence; on the other hand, if she'd bought the idea that she hallucinated the whole thing, Bo didn't want to look a gift horse in the... monkey-head. Thanks for that image, Claudia.

"Dude, why would I follow a killer zombie to the States?" Kenzi demanded, blowing off the really thin tissue of lying lies like party confetti. "And seriously? Your master or re-animator or wizard-person wants you to work at a school? What's the evil plan?"

"A killer what the fuck?" Language, Bo. Also nice lack of argument with the killer part.

"Zombie! You sucked that dude's face off, don't tell me from hallucinations!"

In half an hour, she'd be seeing a pink pony. Now *that* was a hallucination.

"I got it on video! I showed Wes and he said yeah, definitely zombie!" Wait. "Except you're not wearing the boots. Hunh."

"I didn---You WHAT?" Crapshitgaaaaaah. "You showed it to somebody??!" Crapshitgaaaah, repeat ad infinitum. Too bad she couldn't take her own advice about not freaking out.

"I had it up on YouTube for two hours 'til the jackholes made me take it down for 'copyright violation'. Such bullshit. So, yeah, I showed it to people, I got 212 hits, but Wes was the only one who believed me that it was real. Which, maybe says more about how messed up he is, but still!" Kenzi gave Bo a wary look. "Not a zombie?"

"Of course I'm not a zombie. Geez! And shh, keep your voice down!" Because that was said in such an awesomely hushed whisper.

"Hey, are you..." Kenzi mouthed the words a vampire?!?

She wouldn't have to ask these things if Bo would just tell her!

Yeah, Bo would get right on that. Right after she had a Valium milkshake and somebody told her what she was.

"I'm not into other people's blood." If Kenzi had asked her that the same day they met, her answer would have been a little more eyerolly. "There are some vampires around here--" She balanced other people's shit with I saved her once, now I'm kind of responsible for her very, very carefully for somebody who still needed a Valium milkshake. "But they usually ask first." Certain Kate-shaped exceptions aside.

Kenzi stared at Bo's face. Totally stone sober. Then the shirt. She was official and shit!

"THAT IS AWESOME." And: "So if you're not a vampire or a zombie, what are you?"

"A bartender who sidelines in school security?" Bo knew damn well that wasn't going to fly, but it still gave her a moment to take a breath. "I don't exactly know what I am, besides a freak. I've never met anybody who does what I do."

Before, she would have said anybody like me, but that was before she'd met Mitchell, who was more like her than she was comfortable admitting, followed by more some-other-kind-of-freaks than she could count.

"So you can get me booze if someone beats me up?" Kenzi took a breath, and grinned. Gave a tiny bounce on her toes. "You're like a magic Amazon! Only with a stupider shirt!"
