Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"A bartender who sidelines in school security?" Bo knew damn well that wasn't going to fly, but it still gave her a moment to take a breath. "I don't exactly know what I am, besides a freak. I've never met anybody who does what I do."

Before, she would have said anybody like me, but that was before she'd met Mitchell, who was more like her than she was comfortable admitting, followed by more some-other-kind-of-freaks than she could count.

"So you can get me booze if someone beats me up?" Kenzi took a breath, and grinned. Gave a tiny bounce on her toes. "You're like a magic Amazon! Only with a stupider shirt!"

"Hey!" Bo looked down. Then back up. "Okay, fair point, but I don't know where to start with the rest of that. No, I will not get you booze; the Devil's Nest doesn't serve minors....Astra."

It did occur to her right about then that this kid had video evidence of her killing somebody, so maybe she might want to make an exception for that, but... sigh.

"Aw, c'mon. Bo. I am so going to the Devil's Nest-- does it have devils? Is there a Devil?"

Dude, she was in so much trouble if there really was. "And my name could be Astra. You don't know. For sure."

"You can come, you just can't have booze, it has vampires, and... I don't know. How would I know?" How did she talk that much without stopping to breathe? "I'm not a demon. Probably. And nobody's name is Astra."

"So. Cool." Kenzi beamed at her, then pointed. "Okay, yeah, you're right, no one is named Astra. Just don't spread it around. Kenzi. Human. As far as I know, you know? 'Cause I didn't know that was an optional box, except for the time you, you know, saved my bod and all. Did I say thanks?"

Practice, Bo. Looooots of practice.

"Well, just now. Kind of." In a roundabout way. Bo was too busy being grateful that she didn't sound like her next move would be to phone the National Enquirer to complain, though. "How about you stop spreading my box around and we'll call it even?"

.......Wow. Wow, less dirty in her head.

Yes. That was the brain-freeze of too many dirty jokes colliding at once inside Kenzi's brain.

"Would I do that?"

Walk it off, Bo. Walk it off. "Two words: Youtube."

Actually, that was kind of one word.

"...okay, but see, that's when you were just random Killer Bartender Woman who saved me from a skeeze. Now you're Bo! So it won't be repeated."

Probably. Wait. "But I'll tell people it's a good idea not to mess with you. 'Cause dude. That guy died happy, but the clean-up was probably a bitch."

Bo winced. "Don't tell people that. I don't need everybody wondering why it's not a good idea to mess with me. Anyway, I'm not-- I'm trying not to do that kind of thing. I didn't really have a choice before; now I do."

"Whew." Okay, tactless, but hey. Now she didn't have to have any speck of worry about not mentioning it to anyone. "Got it, I'll keep it on the d-l. Sooo, they changed your meds? Or something?"

"I'm not on meds. Not that I'd turn them down if there were any," Bo admitted a second later. "I just met some people here who don't die when I... well, you saw."

Kenzi made an elongated slurping sound, her eyes crossing as she inhaled, then nodded. "Wait, so, you can't help that? Whoa." Okay, that had just seemed really deadly and kind of awesome, and now, not so much. "Glad you found more freaks to be friends with, though."

"Try not to say that directly to the vampires' faces. Some of them might get tetchy." Bo didn't have a lot of room to object, having applied the label herself. "No, I can't help it. Not for very long, anyway. I tried that; didn't go well."

"Hey, the world is full of freaks. You just own your freakishness." But antagonizing vampires seemed like a good way to have a neck rupture, so she wouldn't be breaking out the f-word any time soon. "And I for one am grateful you're a freak. A normal person wouldn't have followed me into that elevator, much less sucked out that guy's breath like a bad babushka fairy-tale."

"It wasn't so much his breath I was sucking." That time, the dirty wasn't accidental, just kind of unavoidable. And she might as well have the truth, since she had the documentation of it. "I live on sexual energy."

Cough. And... what?

Kenzi blinked. "Seriously? You eat-- wait. You get some guy rev'd up, and you get a meal? Or girl. Or whatever, with your new friends and all. That's like one-stop shopping!" JEALOUS!

"More or less?" Though she'd never described it in exactly those terms herself, and certainly not in any tone that came near implying that it was a good thing. "I still have to eat normal-people food too. There's no substitute for Ben & Jerry's."

"Ain't that the truth." Kenzi sucked on her lower lip, then took a breath. "So, you're a nookie-powered destroyer... no. Nookie-powered amazon, of some kind, and you're not responsible for me being here, even though that's a way weird coincidence, and..." And?

"And I'm not an Amazon. I have way better boots than Bitterwoman." Even if they weren't the +3 Boots Of Thigh-High Asskicking she'd been wearing when Kenzi first met her, so no, Wes. Not a zombie, either.

"Yeah, those were kicking." And if Kenzi had a chance to swipe them, they would be walking away like the shoes from those mall stores. "Hunh. Okay. Straaaange cosmic coincidence, one, reasonable explanation, zero. I can live with that." She beamed at Bo. "Kewl."

"This place isn't big on reasonable explanations," Bo said wryly, still wondering how they went from YOU HAVE PROOF OF ME KILLING SOMEONE to kewl but trying hard not to check the gift horse for cavities. "Hard as it might be to believe even for me, you're not the weirdest thing I've seen here."

"I am so looking forward to meeting more people like you," Kenzi responded with a grin.

And stealing from them, maybe.

Bo eyed her for a moment before the expression finally infected her like mutated Bruce-Willis-movie ebola, not that she had that on the brain today or anything. "I'd say the same thing, but I don't think there are any more people like you."

And trying to avoid having to haul one Kenzi into the trooper station every week was going to be hard enough.
