Try Not to Die!! [Tuesday, June 14, 2011]

A visibly annoyed (but at least he wasn't a kitten any more) Anakin stood in front of the Danger Shop's door waiting for his class to arrive, playing with a ribbon that had, until a few hours ago, been decoration around his neck. "Since we did the Old West last week, I decided to program the simulation with a scenario that is more familiar to me," he said, opening the door. "Welcome to the forest moon of Endor. Try not to die."

Okay, Warren could handle this. This was flying. That was kind of his thing.

Flying through dense forest at breakneck speeds that he couldn't hope to reach with his wings while there were guys trying to kill him... That was a new one, and he ended up getting a little too absorbed in not getting hit than he was in actually strictly getting away.

He was still kind of new at this 'being in danger' thing. He was learning.

Sam could tell this wasn't going to go well as soon as he laid eyes on the speeder bike. If he'd been a lucky guy, the controls would have been like a motorcycle but yeah, they weren't.

Helmet on, Sam jumped on the speeder bike and managed to get it going. He started and stopped several times while trying to get used to the controls before he thought he'd gotten it. He stomped down on the accelerator and took off, speeding through the trees.

Unfortunately, Sam's instincts weren't quick enough to sharply turn to avoid a tree and he ended up turning the bike too much. He clipped a fallen log and yep, the simulation stopped. When it restarted, he was back at the beginning. This...was going to suck.

This was just like riding a horse. An extremely fast, flying horse, with no sense of its own to avoid things so Cara had to do all the thinking and reacting to not crash into things.

So maybe not just like riding a horse, but that exhilarating enough Cara took slightly longer than she should have to complete the course.

Cassidy and Speeder Bikes are not things that should be in the same sentence.

She wanted to learn this machine, she so really did.

However, the desire to learn it and the reality of how long it was going to take were two completely different things. The simulation probably had a record number of restarts with her today.

The speeder bike was a little tricky to get a handle on, but between Angelica's experience flying and riding horses, she was able to manage. It was actually kind of fun.

You can do this, Alexander, Alexander repeated to himself as he, looking a little green, considered the speeder bike between his legs. You can do this...

He felt it would be easier doing this on foot, but, if he focused more on not smashing into some of the larger trees and less on the strange equipment, he actually didn't do so bad for himself. Still, by the time it was over, he was going to feel more relieved to get off the bike than he was that he'd avoided any Stormtroopers.

Surreal's first attempt at flying ended. Badly. Her second attempt was slightly better, but failed when she got clipped by a falling branch.

Third time, however, was the charm, once she'd gotten the hang of the steering.

The speeder bike was just cool. It took Toby a little bit of time to get the hang of it, but once he did, he was zipping around the trees with an idiotic grin on his face.

Gabrielle riding a horse tended to go badly enough; Gabrielle riding something much faster and less sentient than a horse could have been a real recipe for disaster. By dint of just hanging on for dear life and a large amount of sheer dumb luck (and possibly temporary, plot-driven nullification of the laws of physics, which was arguably a huge part of sheer dumb luck when it kicked in for her) she somehow managed to make it through the course without exploding into a ball of fire, or aggravating her still-healing injuries.

But with her eyes closed. And a lot of panicked yelping. Also, she was pretty sure she'd left a lot of her hair behind on branches on the course, if the tingling in her scalp was any indication.

As she all but fell off the speeder bike next to the clue box, she decided she was never giving Xena a hard time about runaway chariot rides again.

"Oh, you must be joking!"

Okay. This really wasn't flying. It was just moving along at high speed through a forest a few feet off the ground.

Damn right he was going to be wearing a helmet.

By the time he got through the forest and got to the box Jack's knees looked like they were made of rubber.

Unlike everyone else, it seemed... Kate drove like someone's grandma. Even on speeder bike. It involved a lot of stopping and starting and little bursts of speed.

Bright side, she didn't crash. But it was going to take her double the time of anyone else all the same.

Squall wasn't prepared for how fast the bikes went. Not because he couldn't handle it -- he most certainly could -- but because it was unbelievably stupid of the Stormtroopers' commander to have requisitioned them for general usage in the middle of a forest.

Sure, someone skilled enough might be able to go at top speed in an emergency and not explode in a firey mess, but everybody made mistakes from time to time. Like that 'trooper off to his left. And that other one who -- no, being hit by Fira didn't really count as a mistake.

After some spectacularly death-defying piloting around and through the trees, Squall managed to take out all the chasing Stormtroopers. After that, he throttled back and headed through the forest at a slightly more reasonable speed.

This was another planet! Okay, it wasn'treally another planet. But this was a simulation of another planet! Or, more accurately, moon. It was a simulation of a moon!

Unfortunately any amazement over how this looked exactly like Earth was dimmed by stormtroopers, and Annie wondering- and loudly grumbling- why this bike didn't come with an instruction manual.

Let's just say there were a few restarts.

It was sort of like a motorcycle, Richie reasoned. It wasn't, really, but he could pretend and then maybe this would be a little easier.

That technique helped, a little. He did manage to not crash into anything head-on, though he side-swiped his fair share of things.

Tahiri wasn't familiar with the concept of schadenfreude -- or rather, she was, but she knew it by a Yuuzhan Vong term that made the German sound light and fluffy and kind of Ewok-like by comparison.

Not that she would be indulging in any of that while keeping an eye on the students. That would suck.

"Never looking at teddy bears the same way again," Warren mumbled as he tried to fingercomb his hair back into place, feathers slightly ruffled to account for all the weird little decorative things that had been stuck between them, presumably an attempt to make him look pretty.

"Ever."
