Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The food? Still there. The school? Still standing. Students? Still mingling.

Ahhhh. What fun this weekend was for us all. WHAT FUN. And this time it was actually the good weather for shirt removing!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here.]

"It's the hair probably," Jocelyn said, a little put off but trying to be polite. "Everyone thinks all redheads look alike." She smiled at Karla. "I'm Jocelyn Fairchild. Kiss - kiss? Is that a traditional greeting?"

"Actually, no," Karla said, smiling a little, glancing around to see if she could spot her Sister in the crowd. "I'm guessing your big sib didn't mention doppelgangers to you? It's more than the hair. You could be Cassidy's twin."

Well, except for the tattoos and things, but Karla hadn't seen those.

"It's one of those things that just...happen, here on the island. It's one of the more benign forms of Fandom whimsy, I think. There's a trio of lookalikes running around--Jason Todd, Bobby McCallister, and Percy Jackson. It just happens."

She stopped looking for Cassidy and offered Jocelyn another smile. "It's my traditional greeting, anyway. Don't worry. It's neither a demand nor invitation."

[Her PB is Rachel Hurd-Wood, yes? Just so I know that I'm not crazy?]

Jocelyn raised an eyebrow. "No, he didn't mention anything like that. You'd think he would. Boys."

Karla shrugged a little. "It's not as big a deal as some things--like the gremlins and the invasions? So he probably didn't think of it. He might not know Cassidy, either, so wouldn't realize this would happen." She peered a little more closely at Jocelyn and shook her head. "Actually, now that I'm closer, the differences between you are more obvious. But from far away, the resemblance was striking."

She shrugged and offered an apologetic smile. "I doubt you'll have to worry about being mistaken for one another too often. I could show you a picture of her if you'd like," she added, calling in her cell phone.

[Aha! Subtle--or maybe not so subtle--differences. I know the hair is a big one, but won't mention anything specific so as not to be all moddy. Thank you!]

"I don't know," she said thoughtfully. "I think it'd be weirder sharing my face with someone than dealing with an invasion. I mean, invasions, you just kill the invaders and all's good." She smiled, obviously a bit relieved as she reached up to brush her hair out of her eyes. "I'd wonder if we were related but...probably not."

"I doubt that," Karla said with a smile. "Cassidy's from my world and you are not." Karla didn't know a thing about Jocelyn, but she did know the other female was not a member of the Blood. "And not all the invasions require killing the invaders. Sometimes, they're just annoying and have to be endured."

She paused, and then admitted, "But most of them do. Are you a warrior of some kind then? Most new students here don't take to the idea of being invaded very well."

Nor spoke so casually about killing the invaders.

[Not a problem! I'm sorry for leaping to that assumption in the first place without checking.]

"Before I came here, I thought all the other worlds had been destroyed by demons," Jocelyn admitted, frowning a little. "I'm pretty glad they're not. What's yours like?"

"I'm a Shadowhunter," she shrugged, lifting her hand to shake it back through her hand. "We were given the mission to fight demons and police the Downworlders."

Karla had to pause for a moment and shudder. She'd seen a world destroyed by demons. It had been about as pretty as one would expect.

"I don't know what Downworlders are," Karla said, "but there are several people at this school who fight demons."

Well, one fewer now that Kennedy had left.

"And one or two demons here who would take it most kindly not to be fought or policed," she added, thinking about Raven. Though, really, it was only fair that Jocelyn be given that warning, too.

"As for my world..." she smiled. "It's beautiful. And very old. It's ruled by members of the Blood. That is, races who have been given Craft--magic--to act as stewards and caretakers of the land. I'm a witch, as is Cassidy." Since Jocelyn was throwing about the idea of demons and whatnot, Karla doubted she'd be thrown by the admission of magic.

"It's different at home. Downworlders fight demons too, but..." Jocelyn frowned at Karla's words. "Demons or part-demons? Warren mentioned part-demons, but - they're not the same at all."

She smiled at Karla's description. "It sounds like you love it. And it sounds - a little like Idris. Only without the witches, just Shadowhunters."
