Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

And answers Scully had. She was wandering around too, her nametag prominently displaying Dana Scully, looking vaguely amused at the new people.

"You!" Marshall exclaimed. "Uh. Sorry. Can I try that again? Hi, I'm Marshall."

Scully blinked, then smirked a little and said, "Me. Hi, I'm Scully. Welcome to Fandom." And he must've already had a few shocks if he were reacting like that, oops.

Well, his roommate had mentioned that her big sibling had wings, and there was this thing about syrup rain...e

Oh, and the part where said roommate was a girl.

"Uh, thanks," Marshall said. "There isn't a wormhole in the science teacher's office, is there?"

Back at Black Hole High, everyone'd tried to ignore the weird stuff going on, but if they were going to be open about it, he'd be blunt back.

"Oh, and my roommate's a girl. Who do I talk to to fix that?"

"Not as far as I know," Scully said, cocking her head. "And if you're sure you want to change, you can go to the Residence office. They'll probably make you wait, though. They don't usually take 'my roommate's a girl' as a good enough reason to switch on the first day."

"... But I'm a guy," Marshall pointed out. "It's not co-ed rooms. That doesn't make any sense."

He paused.

"Wormhole anywhere else? Only Jocelyn mentioned something about her big sibling having wings? And, like, a rain of syrup? Something's got to cause it."

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is co-ed rooms, even though that doesn't make any sense," Scully said apologetically. "You haven't met our Vice Principal or Dean yet, have you?"

He'd give up on sense at that point.

His insistence on wormholes and the mention of Warren cleared up part of his confusion for Scully, and she sobered. "The entire island is on a dimensional vortex. Touching all places and times at once. And sometimes drawing in syrup at the wrong altitude as rain."

"Please don't tell me that it snatches people and traps them a hundred years in the past." Marshall's eyes were wide.

And, hey, it was his best guess for where Josie was at the moment; it's where she'd gone the last time she got stuck, after all.

"Not permanently." Way to be reassuring, Scully. "Umm... actually, there are some alien stone angels in the Preserve which I believe did something similar, once, but-- look. I'm eleven years in my own future. I'm from the year 2000." She smiled a little. "I manage to make it home every weekend I want to visit my mom just fine, though. You're safe here."

Well. From time-traveling mishaps. Mostly?

Beat.

Beat.

"Eleven?"

Yeah, guess who was from the past?

"But it's." Marshall blinked. "Isn't it 2005?"

Ohhh boy. Scully was so glad she'd been assigned to this kid. "No, Marshall," she said, in the kind of gentle voice you just *have* to believe, because nobody messing with you would try to be so careful. "It's 2011. Uh, Barack Obama is President, here. And about half the people here are from times and places even further away." To get his mind off that, she asked, "Why were you asking about wormholes?"

[identity profile] wheeler-360.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"... Who?" Marshall asked. "I never really paid much attention to US politics."

He looked away for a moment, processing, before finally grinning. "Lucas is never going to believe this. Safe time travel? Of course, I guess I'll have to leave to be able to call him, since he'd be six years old..."

And, hey, if he could figure out how it worked, it would be another way to search for Josie.

"Oh, you're not American?" Teach her to assume. Then she grinned. "Well, it's not very controlled. But I understand some people visit each other's homes and times, and get to see what they're like. And there's school trips... you've encountered time travel before?" Scully added, somewhat surprised.

[and I fleee back in a few hours!]

"Uh, that would be the wormhole thing," Marshall explained. "Well, wormhole's not quite right, but it's a vortex, too, I guess. It's, uh. At my last school. In the floor of the science teacher's office?

"A couple friends of mine have gone through a bunch of times, but I only went once. Of course, it's done some other weird things around the school, too, so... Doesn't sound too different from here?"

Probably a lot less than usual would need explaining. "Oh, good. Well, not good, but then most of this is probably not-new to you... And how could you survive that?" Scully asked, unwillingly fascinated. "The g-forces should have ripped you apart."

[identity profile] wheeler-360.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're telling me!" Marshall agreed, laughing. "None of us have quite figured out how it works yet.

"Or how it, y'know, made me start embodying the elements of the periodic table in sequence."

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Scully blinked again and then had to ask, "How did it feel to be liquid mercury?"

Geeeek.

[identity profile] wheeler-360.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Didn't get that far," Marshall admitted. "Thankfully. But it's... not exactly the weirdest thing I've seen happen."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then you're going to like it here," Scully said in some relief. "We have regular invasions, biting gremlins, and weekends where you turn into random alternate versions of yourself. Or other people. Also, weird weather, like someone told you, and occasionally, candy appears from nowhere." She paused. "Oh, and some of the teachers are insane."

[identity profile] wheeler-360.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"... Yeah," Marshall drew out. "Sounds a lot like my last school. Except for the candy."

Porifera sponges, on the other hand...

Scully gave him a small smile and said, "It should terrify me that there's two places like this, but hopefully it'll help. I'm in room 201, if you do need help. Oh, and I work at the Clinic on Thursdays, if you need any medical help for some reason."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] wheeler-360.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Medical help?" Marshall put his plate down. "Is that, uh. Something to worry about?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only every once in a while, during the invasions," Scully tried to reassure him. Or if you had some kind of medical condition... She stifled that thought and added, "Some of the students are from very different cultures and times, so be careful about what you assume. Some of them are have special abilities, and some of them are from places that are more violent."

Marshall nodded slowly. "And here I thought being at school with some European exchange students was kinda cool."
