Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Beat.

Beat.

"Eleven?"

Yeah, guess who was from the past?

"But it's." Marshall blinked. "Isn't it 2005?"

Ohhh boy. Scully was so glad she'd been assigned to this kid. "No, Marshall," she said, in the kind of gentle voice you just *have* to believe, because nobody messing with you would try to be so careful. "It's 2011. Uh, Barack Obama is President, here. And about half the people here are from times and places even further away." To get his mind off that, she asked, "Why were you asking about wormholes?"

"... Who?" Marshall asked. "I never really paid much attention to US politics."

He looked away for a moment, processing, before finally grinning. "Lucas is never going to believe this. Safe time travel? Of course, I guess I'll have to leave to be able to call him, since he'd be six years old..."

And, hey, if he could figure out how it worked, it would be another way to search for Josie.

"Oh, you're not American?" Teach her to assume. Then she grinned. "Well, it's not very controlled. But I understand some people visit each other's homes and times, and get to see what they're like. And there's school trips... you've encountered time travel before?" Scully added, somewhat surprised.

[and I fleee back in a few hours!]

"Uh, that would be the wormhole thing," Marshall explained. "Well, wormhole's not quite right, but it's a vortex, too, I guess. It's, uh. At my last school. In the floor of the science teacher's office?

"A couple friends of mine have gone through a bunch of times, but I only went once. Of course, it's done some other weird things around the school, too, so... Doesn't sound too different from here?"

Probably a lot less than usual would need explaining. "Oh, good. Well, not good, but then most of this is probably not-new to you... And how could you survive that?" Scully asked, unwillingly fascinated. "The g-forces should have ripped you apart."

"You're telling me!" Marshall agreed, laughing. "None of us have quite figured out how it works yet.

"Or how it, y'know, made me start embodying the elements of the periodic table in sequence."

Scully blinked again and then had to ask, "How did it feel to be liquid mercury?"

Geeeek.

"Didn't get that far," Marshall admitted. "Thankfully. But it's... not exactly the weirdest thing I've seen happen."

"Then you're going to like it here," Scully said in some relief. "We have regular invasions, biting gremlins, and weekends where you turn into random alternate versions of yourself. Or other people. Also, weird weather, like someone told you, and occasionally, candy appears from nowhere." She paused. "Oh, and some of the teachers are insane."

"... Yeah," Marshall drew out. "Sounds a lot like my last school. Except for the candy."

Porifera sponges, on the other hand...

Scully gave him a small smile and said, "It should terrify me that there's two places like this, but hopefully it'll help. I'm in room 201, if you do need help. Oh, and I work at the Clinic on Thursdays, if you need any medical help for some reason."

"Medical help?" Marshall put his plate down. "Is that, uh. Something to worry about?"

"Only every once in a while, during the invasions," Scully tried to reassure him. Or if you had some kind of medical condition... She stifled that thought and added, "Some of the students are from very different cultures and times, so be careful about what you assume. Some of them are have special abilities, and some of them are from places that are more violent."

Marshall nodded slowly. "And here I thought being at school with some European exchange students was kinda cool."
