Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Bobby had a sign. It wasn't a glittery sign or decorated with Vikings like Caroline's, but it was a quite large sign reading:

Samhain Corvus LaCroix in big red letters.

He, of course, wore a name tag with his own name on it and had another one for Samhain Corvus LaCroix just in case the guy hadn't picked it own up. It was always good to be prepared.

He was also just barely restraining the gleeful bouncing at being able to be someone's big sib.

"I just usually go by Sam."

There was no way Sam was missing a giant sign with his entire name on it. As he stepped closer to Bobby, the colors in his head immediately started registering warm reds and oranges which told him Bobby was just a regular run of the mill human.

He wasn't dead. Considering all the death that surrounded him, Sam thought that a good thing. He smiled slightly at Bobby as he got closer.

"That's a big sign," he added after a moment. "Feel like I'm famous or something."

"I didn't want you to miss it," Bobby assured him. "Hi! I'm Bobby McCallister! Sam's a good name. Samhain is too, but you probably get sick of people mispronouncing it, huh? I thought about maybe putting Sam or something on the sign, but I didn't want to assume you had a nickname. Or that you liked it. Like when people call me Bob. I hate that."

Sam couldn't tell if Bobby was nervous or just boisterous by nature. It wasn't a bad thing. He kind of reminded Sam of Frank but without Frank's constant need to whine about things.

"Nice to meet you, Bobby," Sam said, foregoing the urge to call him Bob just to joke around. He didn't want to completely ruin things just yet. That'd happen the first time someone tried to kill him. Right now, he was just glad Bobby didn't seem afraid of him. "Samhain's a name straight from my mom's mind. I guess I'm just lucky she didn't go for Samantha, right?"

"Well, it's not just from your mom's mind," Bobby pointed out. "I mean, it's also a harvest festival from back in England and Ireland. The one that turned into Halloween, you know?"

"I did not," Sam answered, wincing. "I never really asked the origins of my name because for like the first ten years of my life, I couldn't even pronounce Samhain. I just thought we had a weird uncle or something."

Nick Hatfield was weird but it wasn't due to his name, at least. Oh, the family business just made everything about them weird. Sam was still accepting that.

"Don't you know your uncle?" Bobby asked, looking concerned. "I mean, I don't want to pry or anything."

"Only by name," Sam said, shrugging. "I don't know where he is right now. Or if he's even alive. Cheery subject, right? I'm sure he's just sunning himself in some cabana in Mexico or something. It's not that big a deal"

Or it was because they needed Nick to get the rest of his power unbound but he couldn't do anything about that right now.

"That's how my uncle is too," he shared. "I mean, I know him, but he disappears for a long time then just shows up randomly for Thanksgiving or something. But! Sorry, I'm supposed to tell you about the school, right? So it's kind of strange. Not that the whole mountains thing didn't give it away already. And the people with wings. But don't worry if you see stuff you don't believe in cause the people are probably from a different world."

Mmm, infodump. Enjoy it, Sam!

"I'm from Seattle," he provided, not giving anything away just yet on what he believed in. He believed in a lot now. His back was evidence that weird, strange and violent things existed. Hell, he was one of the strange things.

"Land of the Space Needle and constant rain. People have wings here?" Sam asked, glancing around to see if he could see those things. "Angels? Or some sort of half man, half bird experiment that went a little wrong? Mad scientists seem to be everywhere these days."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm from Missouri. Hart. There's no space needle there. Just a university," Bobby explained. He shrugged a little at the question. "I don't know. I didn't ask Warren, but it looks like wings just grew out of his back. There are totally mad scientists though! My brother rooms with Tony Stark, and he's really, really smart."

Bobby was a little jealous of that.

"What kind of mad scientist is he?" Sam asked, a little wary of someone becoming another Douglas Montgomery. Of course, he did experiments on living beings so he was a little bit of a...psycho.

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Are there types?" he asked. "You mean, like in comic books? I don't know. he's just got a ton of cool mechanical stuff all over. Jack never thought he could end up having to live with someone geekier than me!"

The flow of words stopped as Bobby realised Sam seemed a bit nervous. "Why? Have you known mad scientists?"

[personal profile] necroslacker 2011-05-07 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not really." No, Douglas Montgomery was more of a psycho. "I just wanted to prepare myself in case he built robots who were just going to go evil and start a revolution."

Trying to make it a joke, he chuckled. "I didn't really come to school to fight a robot uprising. I don't know if my mom wants that on a report card."

And to think, you just missed Kyle.

"There was a class on revolutions last year," Bobby pondered. "I didn't get to take it though. But last semester I got to take one on Adventures, and we went to the moon. Your mom'll probably be okay with it. Or she'll make you take a lot of extra classes like my mom does so your college transcript still looks okay."

Sam really doubted college was in his future, not if he was granted a permanent position on the Council. He didn't even want to think about that.

"How old are you?" he asked instead, a little amused at the fact that he was being guided by a shorter and probably younger kid. "You look pretty young to know as much as you do."

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm 14," he said, making a face. "I know I'm younger. I thought they'd given me a freshman or a sophomore, but I've been here a whole school year so I promise I won't lead you wrong and stuff! But if you'd rather talk to someone older, Jack's gonna be a senior too. He's over there." Bobby pointed.

"No, no, that's not what I meant," Sam said hurriedly, holding up a hand. "Look, you know way more about this place than I do, there's no doubt about that. I don't care how old you are. I was just curious. I'm eighteen and I can barely take care of myself."

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh good." Bobby smiled up at him. "I didn't want my very first time as a big sib to end up with you going to the principal and asking for someone qualified. Cause I'm really qualified, I promise!"

"I believe you," Sam assured him, holding up a hand. "You don't have to convince me, I promise. Anything else I should know? I'm not gonna drop into any trap doors, am I?"

Trap doors usually led to cages and he'd spent enough time in those lately that, even if he made the question a joke, he wanted to be prepared if he was going to be face to face with another enchanted cage.

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that Bobby had to think about that might give Sam some pause. "Not that I know of. But the Danger Shop can be made into anything the teacher wants so it could be a trap door. But then, you can't get hurt in the Danger Shop so you're probably okay."

"It's got the name danger in it's title," Sam felt compelled to point out. "You sure about that?"

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wondered about that too," he admitted. "But the Doctor said it was for illustrating dangers. And I guess that makes sense."

"Sounds pretty futuristic," Sam observed idly. It beat the hell out of dodgeball in gym class, that was for sure. "There a lot of dangers that need to be illustrated here?"

"Well, a lot of people come here from dangerous places. Or they have to learn how to fight off monsters or tyrants or they already know how to fight and want to get better," Bobby explained. "So they come here to do it. Not me. I'm just from Missouri. But I have a friend here who's a werewolf. And a lot of kids have magic and stuff. Or they come from space! Miss Jaina taught a class on flying spaceships! It was sooooo cool."
