Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"What kind of mad scientist is he?" Sam asked, a little wary of someone becoming another Douglas Montgomery. Of course, he did experiments on living beings so he was a little bit of a...psycho.

"Are there types?" he asked. "You mean, like in comic books? I don't know. he's just got a ton of cool mechanical stuff all over. Jack never thought he could end up having to live with someone geekier than me!"

The flow of words stopped as Bobby realised Sam seemed a bit nervous. "Why? Have you known mad scientists?"

"Not really." No, Douglas Montgomery was more of a psycho. "I just wanted to prepare myself in case he built robots who were just going to go evil and start a revolution."

Trying to make it a joke, he chuckled. "I didn't really come to school to fight a robot uprising. I don't know if my mom wants that on a report card."

And to think, you just missed Kyle.

"There was a class on revolutions last year," Bobby pondered. "I didn't get to take it though. But last semester I got to take one on Adventures, and we went to the moon. Your mom'll probably be okay with it. Or she'll make you take a lot of extra classes like my mom does so your college transcript still looks okay."

Sam really doubted college was in his future, not if he was granted a permanent position on the Council. He didn't even want to think about that.

"How old are you?" he asked instead, a little amused at the fact that he was being guided by a shorter and probably younger kid. "You look pretty young to know as much as you do."

"I'm 14," he said, making a face. "I know I'm younger. I thought they'd given me a freshman or a sophomore, but I've been here a whole school year so I promise I won't lead you wrong and stuff! But if you'd rather talk to someone older, Jack's gonna be a senior too. He's over there." Bobby pointed.

"No, no, that's not what I meant," Sam said hurriedly, holding up a hand. "Look, you know way more about this place than I do, there's no doubt about that. I don't care how old you are. I was just curious. I'm eighteen and I can barely take care of myself."

"Oh good." Bobby smiled up at him. "I didn't want my very first time as a big sib to end up with you going to the principal and asking for someone qualified. Cause I'm really qualified, I promise!"

"I believe you," Sam assured him, holding up a hand. "You don't have to convince me, I promise. Anything else I should know? I'm not gonna drop into any trap doors, am I?"

Trap doors usually led to cages and he'd spent enough time in those lately that, even if he made the question a joke, he wanted to be prepared if he was going to be face to face with another enchanted cage.

The fact that Bobby had to think about that might give Sam some pause. "Not that I know of. But the Danger Shop can be made into anything the teacher wants so it could be a trap door. But then, you can't get hurt in the Danger Shop so you're probably okay."

"It's got the name danger in it's title," Sam felt compelled to point out. "You sure about that?"

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wondered about that too," he admitted. "But the Doctor said it was for illustrating dangers. And I guess that makes sense."

"Sounds pretty futuristic," Sam observed idly. It beat the hell out of dodgeball in gym class, that was for sure. "There a lot of dangers that need to be illustrated here?"

"Well, a lot of people come here from dangerous places. Or they have to learn how to fight off monsters or tyrants or they already know how to fight and want to get better," Bobby explained. "So they come here to do it. Not me. I'm just from Missouri. But I have a friend here who's a werewolf. And a lot of kids have magic and stuff. Or they come from space! Miss Jaina taught a class on flying spaceships! It was sooooo cool."

"...werewolf?" Sam asked, ignoring almost everything else Bobby had said because he focused on that immediately. "I thought -- aren't they myths?"

Sure, it wasn't the best cover in the world but by the way his back throbbed at the mention of werewolves, going immediately into the story just wasn't something he wanted to do.

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I thought so too," Bobby agreed. "But no, Jake's really cool. Well, he didn't like me at first, but that's cause me and his sorta girlfriend or something went to Homecoming, but he didn't eat me or anything! And now he's my friend. You'll see him. He's really tall and Native American."

And hey, if he didn't attack people, all the better! Still, Sam wasn't going to seek him out at least until he'd gotten a chance to phone Brid and let her in on that little revelation.

"Werewolves going to school," he said almost to himself. "This place is really strange. Did you know that, Bobby?"

It was an attempt at a small joke since of course Bobby knew.

"Why wouldn't they go to school?" he asked curiously. "I mean, they have to learn too, right?"

[personal profile] necroslacker 2011-05-07 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Sam relented, nodding. He hadn't really thought about being in a class with a werewolf before but he knew things had changed for him, at least. Time to stop being so narrow minded.

"Just not something I'd ever thought I'd experience," he added. "But hey, that's happening to me a lot lately. The strangest person I ever had a class with was the kid who ate paste."

Pause.

"In the ninth grade."

"Maybe he had a highly specialized diet?" Bobby tried. "Like an athlete?"

He looked around after a moment, frowning like he could make something appear out of thin can. "I forgot your welcome basket thing! Well, it's not in a basket cause I don't know where you get baskets, but it's in a tub. I think it's in my room. I'm sorry."

"You made me a welcome basket?" Sam asked, more amused by the concept and not bothered by Bobby forgetting it. "You didn't have to do that. That's really nice. No one's ever made me anything like that before. When I got hired at my last job, I got a stupid hat and a shirt. Not a great welcome."

[No problem!]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, my fake big sister did when I first came here last fall, and it was really useful!" Bobby told him. "No stupid hats or shirts, I promise. But watch out, some of the girls like to get the boys to take their shirts off. I will bring it to you tonight or tomorrow, okay? Then you'll still be new enough for it!"

"Thanks, ma -- " Wait, something else Bobby had said caught up with him and he looked quizzical. "Take their shirts off? It's a little cold for that, isn't it?"

Had he just walked into a school full of nudists? His back would probably freak some people out just with the amount of scarring there.

"I don't think the girls care," Bobby pointed out. "They just like to make pretty boys undress for them. Um, not that - I wasn't commenting on you just in general." Because that made things clearer. "Guys took their shirts off in the winter too!"

Lucky for Bobby, Sam left the whole pretty thing alone for the time being. "And guys, they go for this? The girls here are that influential?"
