BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Emma had flown with Angelica from Logan Airport in Boston to Baltimore so she wouldn't have to make the entire trip alone, and Angelica was grateful for that. But after a hug goodbye when the time came for Emma's flight back to Massachusetts, Angelica was alone in the lounge, waiting for the bus to Fandom High. She buried her face in a book and tried not to be too nervous about changing schools, counting out the positives. She might make new friends. Empath and Roulette wouldn't be there. She might accidentally fry someone with her microwave powers.

Oooookay, that last one wasn't too positive.

Yeah, but you'd still have to find your way back," Butters pointed out. "I'd just wait until we got to Mexico, 'cause then you'd at least know where you were."

"But then you'd be way too far away from where you needed to be," Alex pointed out.

Not that this was a problem for him, but, you know, for other people.

"S...sure," Butters agreed, "but if you were far enough away, then maybe no one would find you."

But if they did...hoo boy, would he be grounded!

"I don't think I'm following your logic there. How would you get back if they couldn't find you?"

"Well, at that point," Butters explained, or at least tried to, but, really, it wasn't a very logical brain to begin with, "you may as well not bother trying to get back, and so then you could stay there and...and, why, no one would find you, and you could start all over, get yourself a...a sombrero and maybe a little mustache and go by Mantequilla, and who knows how it could go for you? But maybe, if you had to get back, for whatever reason, you could, before they found you, because then you could at least tell them that you tried to get home, it just didn't go as well as you'd hoped, and you won't get grounded for quite as long as if you just stayed and...and they had to come and find you."

"Oh, you're worried about being grounded," Alex realized. "My dad doesn't really go in for that." Because his dad was freaking Ares.

"Really?" asked Butters, looking on the other boy with a new sort of interest, and almost a worshiping reverence. "Boy, you're lucky! My dad...he grounds me for everything!"

"My dad's kind of not like other dads." Understatement. "He trusts me. You know, as long as I don't embarrass him or something."

"Boy, your dad must be the coolest dad ever!" Butters realized. "Even cooler than Kenny's dad! Kenny doesn't get in trouble for anything. Of course, they're pretty poor and stupid, so I still don't think I'd want Kenny's dad to be my dad."

"He's pretty cool," Alex agreed.

You know. When he wasn't working for Norman Osborn.

"Yeah, I...I bet your dad never hired someone to be your future self or goes to bathhouses to have sex with other men or puts Hamburger Helper in your milk when you just put one little itty bit thing out of order in the pantry..."

Alex was pleased to report his dad never did any of those things!

...although he was a Greek god so the bathhouses thing wouldn't be terribly out of character.

"I...uh...I don't know what to say to that besides 'no?'"

"Yeah," Butters sighed a bit miserably, "that's what most people say, too."

"I'm really sorry?" Most people probably said that, too.

It really was.

"Yeah......"

Again, he sighed, and Butters was quiet for a moment before his brain shifted gears and a clearly exciting thought struck him.

"Well, hey, if your dad never grounds you, an' you're goin' away to camp, too, then maybe I'm not grounded after all!"

"I don't see how you can be grounded when your parents are nowhere around," Alex pointed out. "Unless they live around here and can check in on you or something? Which would suck."

"Oh, God!" Butters gasped, hands flying to his mouth in shock at such an idea. "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, you don't think they will, do you?"

"Do they live in Maryland?" Alex asked.

"No, they live in Colorado."

"Oh, then I wouldn't worry. They're way too far away to check up on you," Alex said with some confidence. "Hey, that other kid is from Colorado."

"I...I wouldn't be so sure," Butters muttered morosely, shaking his head. He looked up slightly at the rest of what the other kid said, though. "What other kid? Stan? Or is there another one? It can't be Cartman; I'd have seen his fat ass about a mile away!"

There was a laugh with that. A nervous, terrified little laugh.

"Oh, is his name Stan? I don't think I caught it. I'm Alex, by the way. Did I say that? Anyway. I'm Alex."

"Well, hi, Alex!" said Butters, happily, since it seemed that he would be spared being tormented by Eric Cartman for a little while longer. "My name's Butters. It sure is nice to meet you. And, yeah, that's Stan; we went to school together in South Park. Isn't it funny, that we should be goin' to camp together, too? Small world, huh?"

"Well, then you're lucky!" Alex said. "You'll already know someone, so it won't be as weird. Is Butters your real name?"

"No," Butters said. "My real name is Leopold Stotch, but everyone calls me Butters."

No, he had no idea why.

No one knew why.
