The Science of Sexuality, Monday

John was waiting at the front of the class with a smile and a pile of tests. "Please turn your papers in, then take an exam and sit down," he said. "We'll be testing you on what we've covered this term." ...and Sherlock was responsible for half the test. Fear.

"I would say it has been a pleasure to teach you all, but lies are beneath me," Sherlock added as he worked on something on John's laptop.

"Sherlock will miss you," John translated firmly. "You've been a great--" Mindbogglingly brainbreaky, "class, and I hope that what we've covered will help you later on in life. Good luck on the test."

After turning in his admittedly half assed paper, Nathan took his seat and tried not to think about the exam. He sucked at them anyway so he figured he was just doomed for mediocrity when it came to academics.

Emma's paper had been written during bouts of packing - and vampires - down in New Orleans, so it wasn't as polished as she would have liked. But it was still a solid essay on Dr. Drew Pinkey, and his effect on pop culture and the public perception of teen sexuality.

Good luck understanding the technical references in Cally's paper. (Er, John. Sherlock will probably get the idea.) Cally wasn't an artificial gestation expert, but she sort of sometimes shared a brain with someone who was.

Much like Emma's, Karla's paper had been written while Karla had been doing other things, like meeting the vampire Queen of Louisiana, working a ritual to watch a friend's cousin get murdered, and attending a fancy dress party that turned into Murderfest 2011. Fortunately, she'd written about 'Dite, which meant she was able to make a few phone calls and get the information she needed.

John and Sherlock had been on the island long enough to accept a paper written about the Greek goddess of love, right?

Oh, god, an exam. Quinn had almost forgotten.

At least her paper was all right; she'd done a profile on Denny Pattyn. She figured nobody would surprised she chose an abstinence figure, but at least Silver Ring Thing seemed vaguely cool.

Claudia's was not the best or most coherently written thing in the world (she leaned far more towards the colloquial style even in academic writing), but she'd at least clearly put a lot of thought into it.

Helen's paper was incredibly well-written with more details than probably were necessary, but still...

Rinoa had spent almost all of the week in Louisiana, at formal dances, or seven years old. Her paper had been thrown together at the last minute, and it showed, but she actually did have a paper, so she hoped that counted for something.

Spock's paper was comprehensive, intelligent, logically thought out, and exceedingly well-written. Because he was Spock.

Bruce's paper was well-written and thoroughly researched with proper citations and everything. He knew his research.

Cally gave a brief rundown of the scale, adding that her opinions on orientation hadn't been changed by the class because they were fairly open to begin with, but she felt the Kinsey scale was lacking representation for those who had no sexual interest at all, before you even got into little things like Humanity is not the only sapient species in the universe, and the model should be scalable for more than two genders.

a. The Kinsey scale says that orientation is kind of fluid. Like some people are only attracted to guys, and some are only attracted to girls, and some are smack-dab in the middle attracted to both. But it also says that people kind of fit in different numbers in the middle sometimes, like, mostly attracted to guys but a little to girls, or different ratios like that.

b. I didn't realize how much variance there was in orientation. I knew some people were gay and some straight and some bisexual but I kind of assumed they were all, like, 100% gay, 100% straight, or 50-50 bi.

(Unless you're asking if I'm weird about sexual orientation or prejudiced or anything? I'm not. People should have rights no matter who they sleep with.)
