When the students arrived in the Danger Shop, they found themselves standing in front of an enormous fountain before a giant building.

"Welcome to the Bellagio in Las Vegas," Anakin said with a tiny smile. "Today's lesson is about the sin of gluttony, or overindulge." His hand waved to encompass the sight before them. "In other words, it's pretty much what Las Vegas exists for. Go inside and explore--there is a buffet of more kinds of food than should be legally allowed, and places that promise riches for very little effort. You get a half hour, then return here and we will discuss why this sort of place is so appealing."

Eat until you're stuffed! Gamble until you're rich! (Anakin has rigged the machines so you'll win steadily for the first twenty minutes, then lose your shirt in the last ten.)

Peter knew how to count cards. And while it was hard to do so without a spotter, he was going to murder at Blackjack.

Then, when things started going really sour and he'd lost a good chunk of his winnings on plays that he felt shouldn't have, he stopped while he was ahead.

Even if it was fake money, he was going to practice some restraint, since that seemed the topic du jour.

Katniss would never ever ever turn down free food, especially when it was this good. Much as when she had been in the Capitol, she promised herself that she'd just try a little of everything.

That didn't work out well, and she felt sluggish and slow by the time she began making her way back.

Why do you think such overindulgence is appealing?

"When you don't have enough -- or don't feel you get enough -- then it's very hard to say no when abundance is placed before you with a 'Take me!' sign," Katniss said, sighing.

"Very good," Anakin replied, nodding. "Do you think it would be easier to resist if the downfalls were more apparent?"

"If I'm any example, no," Katniss said with a little smile. "This isn't the first time I've made myself sick on decadent food."

"What kind do you find the most appealing?" Anakin asked.

"Filling things," she said after a moment's pause. "Soup, rice, bread...."

Anakin took a long, petty moment to send a string of curses mentally towards her President.

"So why do you think that eating more than your fill would be considered wrong?"

"Someone else might go hungry?" Katniss said carefully. "Even if not in this instance, people had to work to create that food, and you're wasting their work. Plus it makes you lazy." She smiled, and added, "I just want to nap."

Anakin's lips quirked up. "And I didn't make rooms for this scenario. Do you think that this laziness could affect a society accustomed to such excess?"

"Because it's a fast way to make yourself happy," Quinn suggested. "Junk food tastes good. Being tipsy, for a little while, feels good. It's all about instant gratification."

Said if she were above such things.

"And why do you think people wish to be instantly gratified?" Anakin asked. "What's so distasteful about working hard?"

"It's boring," Quinn offered. "You get blisters. You hurt. Sometimes nobody even notices. Sometimes you get yelled at for getting things wrong. If nobody's going to notice ... why not go for the Twinkie or the slot machine?"

Anakin nodded. "Good, but it's something everyone does on occasion. What do you think tips it into being such a problem that it was labeled a deadly sin?"

"I don't know," Quinn admitted, confidence faltering for the first time. "I guess because God doesn't want people to just have fun?"

"That seems rather capricious of a deity," Anakin mused.

This Las Vegas thing was brighter and noiser than anything he would ever care to visit. Unless Medusalith wanted to.

But she wasn't there, so he was just going to avoid being touched by humans for now.

Question! Does the rigged nature extend to the table games as well as the machines?

Yep!

I've never been, but I went to Atlantic City last summer and it ruled.

Also, Rinoa's off doing stupid hero-things and won't be in class, zomg.
