Library, Saturday

The previous night had been very nice. Very, very nice. But now there was something wrong with today.

Some odd little feeling like he'd missed something terribly important.

But that wasn't important now. There were books to shelve.

That would be why. "It seems Ahura is visiting us from the future!" Medusalith said with forced brightness, her hair twining comfortingly around the boy's hand. "Isn't that nice?" Or insane. One of those.

"Yes," Medusalith agreed, looking at him with wide eyes. "Quite." And then she tried, "I swear this isn't how it normally happens?"

That would be when a slightly concerned child gave both of their minds a gentle prod to see what was going on.

Someone hadn't been taught to read his father's body language, after all.

"I am positive the Council will not punish us for our future child traveling back in time to visit," Medusalith told him, then had to amend that to, "Well. Almost positive, anyway." She looked down at said child. "Yes?"

"Is he upset?"

ISOLATION. IT WAS A TRADITION.

IT WAS A TRADITION THAT SUCKED.

"No, he's just surprised!" Medusalith assured Ahura. Even if it was kind of a lie. Her hair twitched a bit.

"Well, it makes sense, doesn't it?" Medusalith asked. "He has three-quarters of the same genes as Maximus." And then there was the creepy factor, but mothers never saw that. Perhaps a different haircut would help.

"I am not to speak with him," Ahura said as though repeating something his mother had told him.

A lot.

There, see? Much less creepy already. "Maximus?" Medusalith asked. "Is he very busy? Or, I probably shouldn't ask these things, should I? The future is not for us to know, I suppose." Except for when it came knocking on her door, apparently.

"Yes, do you like Lockjaw?" she asked. Silly question, but she had to check.

"He is acceptable company," Ahura granted them. "I prefer my cousin."

"Yes, I quite agree," Medusalith said to Blackagar.

Oh, look, they were already engaging in the fine tradition of talking over their child's head.

Medusalith smoothed Ahura's hair back and asked him, "Would you like that?"

It didn't occur to her that he might not have understood.

Ahura blinked at her. Because really. Someone had always told him to be polite with his telepathy.

"Like what, mother?"

...oh. Well, while she'd always known she would be Blackagar's voice, this was a complicating factor she hadn't expected. "Would you like to stay here with your father and look at the human children's books until the library closes?"

Ahura looked from his mother to his father before nodding. "May I walk around the library as well?"

It was best to ask now, after all.

Medusalith looked to Blackagar to answer that question, as it seemed more appropriate for the one who worked here than the one who showed up to distract him fairly regularly. "I don't see why not?"

That seemed reasonable enough. "As long as you stay away from Special Collections," she told Ahura. "It is a dangerous place."

Just like Uncle Maximus!

"I understand, mother," Ahura replied, slowly letting go of her hair.

...could they keep him?

"They must have!" she said brightly. "And he said you were king and I was queen, so...well, I think that's a good sign, don't you? Though I of course wish your father a long and happy reign," she added. "It's just...well, they must have approved." Or neglected to mention the parts they didn't approve. One of those. "And he seems like a darling boy." Leaving aside the creepiness.
