Myths and Legends of the Deep {Thursday, Period 2}

Today, the class was held in the Danger Shop and they'd been handwavily notified ahead of time.

The room depicted an ancient city, some of it in ruins.

"Welcome to Atlantis," Summer smiled, gesturing at the cityscape behind her. "The legend of Atlantis comes from Greek mythology. It's legend is well known throughout history. It's said to be a lost continent of antiquity and though there isn't much evidence to say that Atlantis ever existed, many people, scientists included, are fascinated by it."

"There are those who believe that Atlantis could have existed in the Atlantic, others believe it was in the Mediterranean Sea. And then there are those that believe Atlantis was once located where the Bermuda Triangle is today," Summer explained. "Now, the Greek philosopher Plato, had works that were contained the earliest mentions of Atlantis. Some say that the Greek gods divided up land between and Poseidon was granted the island of Atlantis. Atlantis was said to consist of eighteen rings alternating between land and sea. The center island was ruled by Atlas, son of Poseidon. Under the rule of the gods, Atlantis became great; unfortunately, the entire island was engulfed by the sea and disappeared."

What Summer would give to learn if the island was real or not.

"According to Plato, the Egyptians described Atlantis as as an island comprising mostly mountains in the northern portions and along the shore, and encompassing a great plain of an oblong shape in the south. There are accounts that some ancient writers believed Atlantis to be real, while others saw it as fiction." She paused, wondering if evidence would ever come to pass.

"Though we may never know if it truly existed, I'd like to think that there's some truth to the legend of Atlantis," Summer smiled. "Many have different takes on what Atlantis may have looked like and what you see before you is how I envisioned Atlantis to be. So, feel free to explore and if you have any questions, feel free to find me."

Ariel tried not to snort, but mostly failed.

An underwater city called Atlantis? Pshyeah, right. Wonder where they got that idea.

Jason tried to listen to the lecture, but it was impossible for him to concentrate. After getting Nico's e-mail, all he could do was sneak glances at the other boy and try not to turn red. He assumed that the porn had been something up Nico's alley, and if that was true...yeah, looking at him was just going to make his thoughts even dirtier.

Catching a glance, Nico removed the pen from his mouth and waved with it. He wasn't smug so much as thoroughly amused with himself.

Jason caught the wave, and ducked his head a little to try to keep from turning bright red. After a moment, he looked at Nico again with a mock glare, assuming he'd know what it was for.

Nico didn't know what he'd done to earn glaring so he shrugged and went back to chewing his pen.

Luke supposed he was supposed to spend class completely annoyed with Jason after what Percy told him about their fight but he found he was too tired--again--to do anything but zone out. Which was impressive considering where they were at the moment. Really, he should have gotten an award for it.

Trying to go for that studious thing, Nico had chewed a pen and let his mind wander while Summer talked about Greek mythology that didn't quite match up with what he'd experienced. He didn't really grasp that studious people took notes with their pens rather than sticking them in their mouths.

Percy had heard about Atlantis and even read a bit about it so he was going to take advantage of the opportunity and go exploring a little. He made a note to ask his dad about this place at some point.

Exploring was way better than taking notes, even if this was some water-logged city. Thank the gods the danger shop was fake or he might be really concerned for his livelihood.

As soon as they were a safe distance from their teacher's ears, Jason went up to Nico and nudged him in the side. "You suck," he said quietly, although he was smiling at Nico. "Do you have any idea how late I was up last night?"

"And that's my fault how?" Nico asked, elbowing at Jason's arm and starting to understand the glaring.

"You know what you e-mailed me!" Jason said. "It was really good, by the way. I'm assuming you already watched it and knew that though."

As if Ariel needed any prompting to go exploring! After all, if they were ruins, there was bound to be treasure!

Still, she couldn't help noticing how amazingly similar these ruins seemed to Atlantica! It was uncanny!

Hmm, this place kind of reminded her of parts of Bordertown. It almost made her homesick.

Is the danger shop set up to make it look like they're underwater or like Atlantis has been raised to the surface like?
