Fighting With Powers [Monday, Fourth Period]

The Danger Shop was set up to look and feel like a warm spring day in a nice open grassy field. Max could have picked just about anything with space to move in, but it amused him to go for something incongruous with the actual weather.

Again his voice was loud, but at least they were outside so the effect wasn't quite as bad as it had been last week. "Welcome back to Fighting With Powers. Last week we talked a bit about what each of us is capable of. This week we're going to take that and put it into practice."

Max took nearly an entire minute to study each of his students in turn. Eventually he nodded, more to himself than to them. "Since I want as much time as possible to evaluate each of you, there's no lecture or anything today. We're going straight to today's exercise."

"The activity comes in two parts. First, each of you will spar with me for a couple of minutes. This will allow me to really gauge what you already know and what you can do while allowing your fellow students to get a feel for the same thing. Then you'll break into pairs and practice with one another. Try to pick a partner who can teach you something, or at least challenge you with a power or technique you haven't dealt with before."

Any questions? No, of course not. Good.

"That's it. Let's get started."

Max snorted. Fine, then.

Max lashed out, grabbing at her foot.

Ah! Blossom flew backwards to escape his reach, pulling up her feet as she did, then tossed her yo-yo to try to lasso his extended hand.

The yo-yo wrapped around, but then Max yanked his hand back.

Even though Blossom was used to people trying it, she wasn't used to strong people trying to pull her from the air, so his move did pull her off balance and it took a fraction of a second for her to stop her forward movement.

And despite the potion from Rikku, she was still favouring her wrist enough that her attempt to lift Centurion and toss him was a bit too weak.

Max still left the ground. But that was okay.

He smiled slightly and windcrafted a column of air underneath him that launched him upward. Straight at Momoko. Still holding the yo-yo.

If she had a moment to spare, she'd totally think that him using all that wind was awesome!

But Centurion was a bad guy, at the moment. And how many times had some monster shot themselves out of a canon or catapulted themselves at her? Besides, she could really fly, remember?

She tugged again on the yo-yo to gain control of his 'flight', and then dropped herself down and under him. Still pulling.

Not bad.

Max smiled as he sailed past her and then jerked into a new direction once the yo-yo pulled taut again. He didn't react yet. He was curious to see what she had planned.

Not much, except that now Blossom had momentum and could actually let loose her yo-yo and recall it so that Centurion would go flying off past her. Hopefully.

And hopefully not hitting anything and getting hurt. She'd intentionally not added much to the final tug before releasing him.

Ah. Not a bad idea. Max smiled in approval. Even as his hand blurred, enhanced speed driving a swing for the yo-yo. If she couldn't get it back, well, that could make things interesting.

Oh, she got it back, but just barely. Blossom frowned unhappily as his fingers slid off the surface. She was totally not used to being challenged by someone with powers, and it was showing.

At least she'd just returned from heavy fiend fighting, so her instincts were still sharp?

Blossom spinned with the returning yo-yo's momentum, then sent it back out against Centurion, attempting a strike.

Max was already moving pretty fast, what with the force of her throw, he sailed just out of range in a long arc that had him bouncing across the grass a few times.

"Ah! I'm sorry!" Blossom flew closer and tried to lasso and lift Centurion up before he bounced too many times; she knew, courtesy of both Dinah and Azula, that it could really hurt!

Eh, it wasn't that bad. Just thirty or forty feet of bouncing and rolling.

He'd had worse.

In fact, he came out of the last bounce on his feet.

Oops! She screeched to a halt, mid-air, pulling her yo-yo back and into a spin... Just in case.

"Uhm. Are we still sparring?"

Max snorted. "We're just getting started."

"Ah!" Blossom backed away and up into the air again, her yo-yo at the ready as she waited for Centurion's next move.

And Max also waited, simply watching Momoko for the moment.

This was the problem Blossom had with sparring. She wasn't an actual fighter, so she didn't start fights well.

"He's Mojo Jojo. He's Mojo Jojo. He's Mojo Jojo."

Centurion was fast, though. He would grab her yo-yo if she just threw it at him. And there wasn't anything else she could...

Oh! She jumped up higher and sent her yo-yo flying at a small hump in the ground near the teacher, sending dirt and grass flying up and hopefully distracting Centurion long enough for her yo-yo to loop up and continue through the debris for a strike.

Fortunately, Momoko's yo-yo had metal in it somewhere. Max reached out with his metalcrafting to feel it. That made it simple enough to lean to the side, avoiding the arc of the weapon.

Then he aimed a blast of wind at Momoko. Maybe he could disrupt her flight.

Disrupt. Toss her a few yards. Small difference.

When she managed to get her flight under control again, she took a moment to try to locate Centurion.

He was already in the air, leaping toward her once again in a flying tackle.

ACK! She only had time to curl up and aim her legs at him, hoping to kick him off course. Or her, away. Either would work to gain her time.

Getting kicked in the shoulder while going that fast was pretty painful, but Max had a lot of momentum, so it didn't deflect him nearly enough to stop him from getting his arms around Momoko's legs.

Not that he thought he would add enough extra weight to bring her down. He was pretty sure she was a lot stronger than that.

Well, that plan didn't work.

Blossom kicked, starting the small rockets in her shoes to counter Centurion's upward momentum and regain control. Now they were heading down. Fast.

New plan? Unexpected body slam at the last minute. Very last minute.

As they neared the ground, Max smashed at Momoko with another blast of air. It wouldn't stop them from hitting, but hopefully it would disrupt her enough to keep her from making him take all the force of the landing.
