Fighting With Powers [Monday, Fourth Period]

The Danger Shop was set up to look and feel like a warm spring day in a nice open grassy field. Max could have picked just about anything with space to move in, but it amused him to go for something incongruous with the actual weather.

Again his voice was loud, but at least they were outside so the effect wasn't quite as bad as it had been last week. "Welcome back to Fighting With Powers. Last week we talked a bit about what each of us is capable of. This week we're going to take that and put it into practice."

Max took nearly an entire minute to study each of his students in turn. Eventually he nodded, more to himself than to them. "Since I want as much time as possible to evaluate each of you, there's no lecture or anything today. We're going straight to today's exercise."

"The activity comes in two parts. First, each of you will spar with me for a couple of minutes. This will allow me to really gauge what you already know and what you can do while allowing your fellow students to get a feel for the same thing. Then you'll break into pairs and practice with one another. Try to pick a partner who can teach you something, or at least challenge you with a power or technique you haven't dealt with before."

Any questions? No, of course not. Good.

"That's it. Let's get started."

Max will permit at least a little bit of talking while he's doing one-on-one sparring. Just don't let it get out of hand.

Momoko was watching the sparring intently, not really caring if her face revealed how worried she might be. She was totally remembering how badly her last sparring attempt with a teacher went.

Maybe Centurion would let her be Blossom for this, since her hand-to-hand still pretty much was just defensive blocking?

To tell the truth, Stephanie was itching to get into a decent spar with someone, like really chomping at the bit about it, but fighting in her civilian identity was right out.

Good thing her stricken expression looked a lot like being terrified at the prospect . . .

"I've never fought before," Tara admitted, a strange, confused expression on her face. "N-not counting self-defense. So, uh ... I kinda don't know how to start."

Max's gentle smile was sort of at odds with all the yelling from earlier. His voice even shifted a bit when he spoke. "Don't worry about it. Let's start with what you know."

"Imagine I'm about to attack you, and you know it. What do you do?"

"Centurion?" Momoko sighed and stepped up when her turn came. "Do you want me to transform and fight with my powers?"

Max took a moment to consider that, then nodded. "Go ahead. It'll be more useful to really know what you can do, I think."

"With weapons or without?" Karla asked. "Just so you know, I don't think the answer's changed much since last week."

"It's a bit easier with you since I know a lot of what you can do, but for the purpose of this exercise, you can use whatever makes you comfortable. Assuming that you have access to it when you've been surprised."

And since Karla could just call things in, well... it was a really handy trick.

Cassidy was cheerful as she stepped up to take her turn. "I haven't really learned how to fight much," she admitted. "Though Mr. Genesis is trying to teach me how to make my Craft work with the elements."

"That's a start," Max decided. "Let's start with a fairly simple scenario, just to see how you're doing."

"Assume that I'm attacking you. How do you respond?"

Leda was kind of looking forward to this. She hadn't sparred with anyone new in a long time. It had gotten a little predictable sparring with Strider.

She assumed a defensive position she'd learned in Faith's class.

"I'm not really a fighter," she objected. "I don't even have powers."
