Fighting With Powers [Monday, Fourth Period]

The Danger Shop was set up to look and feel like a warm spring day in a nice open grassy field. Max could have picked just about anything with space to move in, but it amused him to go for something incongruous with the actual weather.

Again his voice was loud, but at least they were outside so the effect wasn't quite as bad as it had been last week. "Welcome back to Fighting With Powers. Last week we talked a bit about what each of us is capable of. This week we're going to take that and put it into practice."

Max took nearly an entire minute to study each of his students in turn. Eventually he nodded, more to himself than to them. "Since I want as much time as possible to evaluate each of you, there's no lecture or anything today. We're going straight to today's exercise."

"The activity comes in two parts. First, each of you will spar with me for a couple of minutes. This will allow me to really gauge what you already know and what you can do while allowing your fellow students to get a feel for the same thing. Then you'll break into pairs and practice with one another. Try to pick a partner who can teach you something, or at least challenge you with a power or technique you haven't dealt with before."

Any questions? No, of course not. Good.

"That's it. Let's get started."

Ooof. Actually, "OOOOOF!"

Blossom was suddenly stopped midflight, the whiplash effect causing her to hang a moment and then fall herself. Despite the thrust from her shoes. She turned to see what was wrong, she hadn't noticed anything Centurion could catch on.

Being able to directly manipulate any earth you were touching really came in handy sometimes. Even if the pressure on his legs was incredible, trying to hold her back.

Ah! His feet! He'd dug them into the ground and gotten stuck! Blossom pushed herself up off the ground and into a back flip, flying over Centurion and hoping to pull him loose.

As added incentive, she twisted enough that she could throw her yo-yo at his arms to try make him let go.

Rather than letting himself get pulled out of where he'd wedged himself, Max let go of Momoko's legs, hand snapping to the side to grab her yo-yo out of the air.

If he could take away her weapon, he could keep the fight at close range where he'd have the advantage.

He let go! That allowed her to fully turn and...

WHY WAS HE ABLE TO CATCH HER YO-YO?!

Frustrated, she immediately tugged on the string and at the same time pulled her hairbow from her head. Blossom hated to use it, but... She gave the bow a sharp, quick snap, concentrated a second, then tossed it at the hand that was holding her yo-yo. Seeing as how it was now charged with some of her energy, it was more a cross between a throwing star and a boomerang, and would... should hurt if it connected with his hand?

And unfortunately for Max, the ribbon wasn't made of metal. He saw it coming, but without the precision of his metalcrafting senses he wasn't able to really get out of the way.

He hissed as the ribbon struck his hand, and let go of the yo-yo.

And poor Blossom wasn't actually prepared for it, or at least she wasn't aware of how much strength she was using to pull the yo-yo from him. As soon as he let go, Blossom went tumbling back in the air, landing a short distance away.

But she had her yo-yo back!

Max moved immediately, feet churning up out of the ground as he charged for Momoko. If he could get there before she recovered, maybe he could pin her. Or at least get a couple of shots in.

Blossom was longer on the ground than probably was good, she was a bit too used to having teammates to back her up.

Shaking her head to clear it, she looked up to see Centurion coming, but too late to do anything about it.

He launched himself forward in a twenty foot diving tackle. You could manage that kind of distance with enough power at your disposal, and Max had that. He didn't even have to call on the wind to push him forward.

Blossom... meeped.

Max landed on her, forearm moving forward to lock itself across her throat.

The force of his landing totally knocked the wind out of Blossom. She had just enough time and energy left to move her arms and block his from reaching her neck, but that was it. She couldn't think of any way to get him off her, either.

She totally missed having a team.

"I don't suppose," she wheezed from behind her crossed arms, "that you're ticklish?"

"If I was, do you think I'd tell you?" Max asked with an amused little snort.

"No, but if you weren't you totally would." Blossom grinned back at him then suddenly activated her shoe thrusters to try to boost herself out from under him.

Max held on. He was used to people trying to surprise him, though Momoko's approach was, admittedly, rather original.

Well, that was a start; they were moving!

Blossom just wanted to rattle him enough that she could uncross her arms and grab his to try to roll and toss him off her. While moving across the field, of course.

That didn't seem like a good idea to Max. He'd much rather keep trying to force his arm across her throat. Because that was probably a win for him if he could manage it. Besides, trying to hold him off meant that Momoko had to do all sorts of extra work, and that limited her options for countering him.

Well, that was frustrating, because Blossom had to use quite a bit of strength to counter him and she was not in the best position for that.

She shifted her feet slightly and often, so their 'flight' was now zigzagging.

Max countered by lowering one of his feet, letting it hit the ground and then sink into it like it was water before letting it begin dragging at him. Now it would be that much harder to drag him around.

Though it also meant it was that much harder for him to hold onto Momoko.

Blossom felt her speed fall and frowned. Drag? Was he digging his feet into the ground again? Argh! She needed to get them into the air, how could she do that?

While she tried to figure out her next step, Blossom set about changing her speed, up and down, as well as still zigzagging.

Every time she slowed down, Max tried to increase the drag, hoping to slow her even more. Maybe if he got her to stop he could hold her in place.

Of course when she sped up he had to reduce the drag of the dirt around his leg or risk getting pulled off of her entirely.

Which was totally the plan, Centurion! But apparently it wasn't working, Blossom needed to get the advantage back, which meant she needed to get into the air and get distance.. But without a tree to lasso or a hill to use as a ramp...

Ah! She could make one!

Or rather, she could make Centurion make one. Blossom shifted her pattern so that they were soon repeating some of their earlier paths, deepening furrows already in the ground.

Max noticed what she was doing. That didn't mean he understood exactly why, but it did suggest that she had some sort of plan. And Max had been in combat often enough to know that letting someone else execute whatever plan they had was usually a bad idea.

So he only let her drag him a little farther before deciding to execute his own plan. Max concentrated, slamming up a sudden wall of dirt directly in her path. Six feet tall in just under a second was hard. Especially considering how difficult earth was to work with. Fortunately it was loose dirt, and he only tried to make it three feet wide.

Still, if this didn't work, he would have wasted a lot of energy for nothing.

"OW! OW OW OW OW!" Blossom ran smack into it and stopped.

Luckily she had adjusted her speed down by the time she'd reached it, but it still HURT! "Oooowwww!"
