Jono was perhaps a bit distracted today as he went about his duties in the library, straightening out this and that, making certain that the displays were all in order, checking for overdue books and, failing all of that, dusting.

And if he just so happened to be lingering in sections that had books on things like demonic possession, well, that was purely coincidence, really.

Truly.

"Uh huh," Jake agreed before sobering a little. "How's she been doing?"

So he probably should have been asking how Jono was doing, but Rosalind was the one who was getting him worried.

//She's... been,// Jono replied, looking Jake up and down for a moment before shrugging a little. //She's told me some of what I think you might be worried about. But she's not exactly th'most forthcoming with details, really.//

"No, really?" Jake rolled his eyes at the thought and sighed. "Stupid Fandom timing. I'm starting to get the feeling she's avoiding me now."

//You know how fiercely independent she is, mate,// Jono replied, tilting his head thoughtfully. //You haven't been fussing at her, have you? I don't think she'd have any idea how to start taking it, if you have.//

He really couldn't speak for Rosalind, but he knew that when people got all fussy at him, he generally took to attempting to avoid civilization as a whole, as best as he could.

"I haven't had the opportunity to fuss," Jake pointed out. So okay, he'd hugged her which was just weird to think, but he didn't think he'd fussed. "Wanting to help and fussing aren't the same."

He was possibly justifying there.

//I suppose that depends on how you go about it,// Jono noted. //Maybe she's afraid that you will fuss. Th'gel's still trying to get around th'fact that she's got friends who miss her when they don't see her in weeks, mate. I think she needs to be eased into things like how they're also worried about her, too.//

"Yeah, I got that impression," Jake agreed. "I'll try to push her gently or something?"

He had no idea. "I don't know. Why are girls so complicated?"

//I'd blame hormones,// Jono mused, //but I'm certain I'd get a swat upside th'head for that, too.//

Because it was true.

//So I'll take th'safe route and just go with, 'they're not complicated. We're all just simple.'//

Jake snorted. "But it's so much fun to get them riled up."

//There's no denying that, mate,// Jono agreed, crossing his arms over his chest and shaking his head a little. Girls. Couldn't live with them... //And not particularly difficult, either. But getting Rosalind 'riled up' isn't going to help you help her, I don't imagine.//

"No," he agreed. "I kind of like that we haven't been arguing. I wouldn't mind sticking to it for a while longer."

Look, it was going to happen eventually. He wasn't stupid about that at least.

Between Jake and Jono, Rosalind was going to have a lot of boys picking arguments with her over this projected lifespan of hers. She'd better get used to it.

//And she's bright enough to know when yer nudging at things she'd be uncomfortable about,// he added. //That said... do you know what sort of time frame we're looking at? I'm not exactly in any hurry for anything to happen to her, either.//

"She said she had a few years," Jake said, at least grateful for that. "So there should be time figuring out how everything went. If she doesn't know already. I didn't get time to ask her too much yet."

Yet. He was going to.

//Yet,// Jono echoed. //I've been... trying. She figures that she'll train harder, and that'll make all th'difference.//

Jono was clearly not buying Rosalind Logic, in this situation.

"I figure she'll have backup and that will make the difference," Jake replied. He didn't have to ask if Jono was in, he'd already figured that one out.

//Mmm. Knowing what it is she'll stepping into would still help, though,// Jono noted. //Little point in knowing th'future if we don't know details, is there? And we can't exactly babysit her every waking moment of th'day.//

Which bothered the hell out of him. The list of people that he wanted to babysit 24/7 was about as long as his arm, by now.

"No," Jake sighed. It'd be easier to do if he was on the same floor but from a floor above it was harder to make out the sounds. Not that he would contemplate it, really. "That's why she's got to agree to let us help."

Which wasn't going to be easy and for a moment he had thought he could talk her into it, but then he'd turned plushie and now he wasn't so certain anymore. Stupid timing.

Timing was a cruel, cruel thing, indeed.

//We'll get it out of her eventually,// Jono replied, reaching to clap a hand on Jake's shoulder. //Carefully. It's more than a matter of pride, I think. We've just got to... figure it out, is all.//

"Yeah, I'll try," Jake grimaced. "I'm not so good at careful and she's got this way to push your buttons, you know?"

//No,// Jono corrected lightly, //she's got this way to push your buttons. My buttons are all nice and un-pushed, generally.//

Because Jono was stubborn and generally took it as he dished it out.

But then, he was good at careful. Which probably helped some.

"Oh." Jake was blinking and wondering exactly what that meant. Then quickly decided he didn't want to know. It'd only end up in a headache. "Maybe you should then..."

Not that he knew what Jono should. Maybe they needed to change subject here? Except that he couldn't think of anything.

Jonothon shrugged his shoulders, somewhat amused by Jake's reaction to that. He could have been mean and suggested that perhaps pushing buttons was Rosalind's idea of flirting, but he figured that was hardly productive.

//Wot? Just me?// he raised an eyebrow a little. //Between you and me, I think she's expecting you to keep poking about it. I wouldn't let up so easily just because I was terrible at careful, if I were you.//

No no, that would have caused both a headache and a panic attack. Or something similar to it, werewolves didn't panic, dammit.

"I'm not letting her off the hook," he assured Jonothon instantly, probably contradicting himself now. It happened. "We could be annoying and careful cop."

//... Well, I suppose it beats Good Cop, Bad Cop,// Jono mused. //Fine, I'll go with that.//

There were worse things to be labelled than 'Careful Cop.'

"She's so killing us when she finds out," Jake laughed.

Which was pretty likely.
