Advanced Driver's Ed, Monday Period Two

Bond had *handwavily* informed his students to come and meet him in the Danger Shop, where he was waiting on a deserted stretch of road beside a sleek, gleaming car.

"Good morning, class," Bond began once the class had assembled. "My name is Professor Bond, and this is Advanced Driver's Education, I would hope you all have the basics of driving down, but given how often paperwork errors crop up if any of you do not actually know how to drive a car, please see my assistant Mr Reese," he nodded in Kyle's direction. "And he'll make arrangements to help you catch up. Normally this class would be where we have introductions but given the relatively small size of the class, and the fact I've taught all but two of you before, I believe we can forgo those and do something a bit more interesting."

He gestured to the car. "This is the Aston Martin DBS," Bond explained, pausing a moment to let them admire the car. He pressed a control and it began raining. "This is a road in the rain. Over the course of this class you will gain an intense appreciation for working breaks, and you will start by taking this car, driving as fast as you can, and then trying to stop without spinning off the road. With one of your fellow students a passenger. Thanks to the safety protocols, no harm will come to any of you in here, but if you attempt this out in the real world you will most likely die. Horribly."

He grinned and clapped his hands together. "So who wants to go first."

"If anyone wants to take a chance with me behind the wheel, I'll return the favor." With that, he opened the door and sat in the driver's seat.

"I'll take the chance," Bod decided, sliding into the passenger seat next to Kyle. He'd taken riskier chances in his opinion so there was no hesitation about riding with Kyle. "And I'll return the favor as well."

"Let's hope," Kyle said as he turned the key and started the car, "that the brakes work and this isn't one of Mr. Bond's life lessons." He didn't give Bod much of a chance to back out since he put it into gear and slammed his foot down on the accelerator.

Bod would have answered if he hadn't been pushed back into his seat and grabbing at the door just to keep himself steady. He sent a glance at Kyle, checking to make sure the other boy knew what he was doing before swinging his eyes back to the road.

"While I always appreciate life lessons," he said after he'd gotten his heart settled down, "I think I agree with you. Hopefully Professor Bond wouldn't teach a life lesson on the first day of class."

"You're probably right," Kyle said as they picked up speed. Driving in a straight line was the easy part of driving. "He'll save that for next week after we're settled and not expecting it."

"I wonder if he'd feel offended if I checked the brakes before every class," he said, settling more comfortably back in the seat so sudden jerks or turns wouldn't toss him around too much. "Sign of distrust?"

Kyle shook his head. "Sign of caution. Mr. Bond's a cautious guy." He just tried to hide it. "You ready to brake?"

"I am," Bod said, nodding and watching the road to see how the car reacted to the sudden braking. "Whenever you are."

He slammed his foot down on the brake. The car surprised him by not stalling. He did have to hold on tightly to the wheel to keep them steady since this patch of road was slippery from the rain and the back end wanted to slide. It took way longer than Kyle expected for them to come to a halt. "I didn't think it was going to stop."

"It did seem like it went on for a rather long time," Bod returned after he'd gotten his voice back. It had been exhilarating in a way and his adrenaline was definitely flowing.

"You handled yourself well," he added after another moment. "I think we would have ended up backwards and upside down had it been me."

"We'll see. I'll drive us back and you can prove yourself wrong."

Bod chuckled and sat up some, shaking his head. "I know how to drive but I'm not incredibly skilled. I learned from various strangers here and there while traveling. A lot of it was self taught as well."

Kyle managed to do a turn and get them heading back to where everyone else was waiting. "I had to learn pretty fast the first time I drove a car. We were being chased." And Marcus had shoved him out of the car afterwards, wisely deciding that if they were going to survive, Kyle wasn't going to be doing the driving. "It wasn't so bad after that. Some of the older guys taught me how to do gears and reverse, stuff like that, in case I needed it."

Road rules were not included in his instruction.

"Most of my practice came on country roads and empty parking lots since I didn't tend to visit cities unless I needed to stock up. Country roads were fantastic for driving fast but they didn't always provide room for turns and such."

Bod knew it wasn't the greatest of instruction but it was something. "I think most of the people I met just didn't want someone unfamiliar destroying their cars so I took what I could."

"The people I've seen on the mainland are protective of their cars. I guess they like the freedom it gives them. You can get somewhere a lot faster in a car than on foot. It's an advantage over your surroundings." He turned the car and pulled it to a stop back where he'd found it, more or less.

"Foot travel is a lot more scenic and a lot easier for exploration," Bod said, reaching for the car door handle so he could slide out. "I've traveled on foot quite a lot and it's provided me with beautiful landscapes and interesting discoveries that whizzing by in a car wouldn't do."

Kyle left the car running with the handbrake on and got out. "Yeah, I didn't use a car until a few years ago. Not a lot of clear roads where I come from. It's harder to get away faster on foot, but it's good for hard terrain."

"I should warn you, I don't think I'll go quite as fast as you," he said, circling around and making to climb into the driver's seat. "I'm still working my way up to speeds such as that."

"That's smart." Kyle followed Bod's lead and walked around the car. "It's harder to control when you go faster."

"I'll do my best," he said, taking the wheel and letting himself get a quick feel for everything before doing anything. "Ready?"

Kyle settled himself into the seat and grabbed hold of something like he usually did in a car. "Ready."

Bod accelerated quickly (but not as quickly as Kyle) and kept his hands tightly on the wheel while they sped down the rain slicked road. He was thankful this was a simulation because he did not want to actually ruin a car like this.

"So far, so good," he said idly.

"You're better at this than you think."

"You say that now," he said, laughing and not taking his eyes off the road. Once they got near the end, he hit the brakes hard, turning them into the skid they started and ending up a little turned around.

It had been fairly controlled though so it wasn't a huge mistake.

Kyle had planted his feet firmly enough that he didn't get too thrown around until they came to a stop and he jerked back into his seat. He took a second to let out the breath he'd been holding. "That was good. You didn't even flip the car."
