Jono had better things to do today than take in some bloody picnic. Like chill out with the books. Jonothon liked the books, damn it. The only chewing that he was expected to do on them was only in the most figurative sense, and he wasn't expected to do any socializing or speaking to them, and--

Had Jonothon ever mentioned how much he had always wished for this sort of excuse to avoid the hell out of the Welcome Picnic?

This was because Jono was an antisocial plonker.

"If I say yes," Rosalind murmured, with a glance at him. "Does this mean you'll not sign me up for any clubs?"

Jono nearly twitched a smile, at that.

//Well, I wouldn't have any reason to, would I?//

Admit it, Rosalind. You liked the Apathy Club. And it always could have been worse. It could have been Glee! He could have made you sing!

"I suppose not."

Rosalind smirked slightly.

"Except for your own amusement."

//And I was not disappointed,// Jono replied, his tone a sombre as he could manage. //Bloody pointless club, though.//

He hoped that they had it again this semester.

If they did, she'd sign up.

Not that Rosalind would tell Jono that.

"Quite useless," she said, with a sharp little nod. "Not entirely humourless, however."

//It did have its moments,// he agreed. //And really, if nothing else, it's good to know that there are that many people in th'world who think that there's no better way to spend a Friday afternoon than by sitting around complaining.//

"It was friendly, for all of that," she noted, with a lift of her shoulders.

//But friendly at our own pace,// Jono replied. //I think that made all th'difference, for most of us. No pressure.//

Jono didn't take so well to pressure.

//So, are you avoiding th'picnic as well, luv? Or have you already been and went?//

"I haven't made it there yet," she admitted, leaning back a little more comfortably. "Jacob is no longer amongst the plushie population."

//Ah, back to th'land of the bipedal and animate, is he? I'm certain he's pleased about that.//

There was that bemused look, that suggested that he was thinking back to seeing the stuffed wolf covered in snow. Poor Jake.

"He seemed more interested in talking about--popcorn," she said, very dryly. "But I'm sure he was well enough pleased."

Jono's woeful little 'man, I miss popcorn' face was not terribly long-lived, fortunately.

//Popcorn's an odd thing to be on about after turning back from something, I should think...//

Not that he would know. The island had been fairly kind to him in the 'turning into other things' department.

She sighed.

"It means he wishes to continue the conversation we'd been having before he'd turned."

And oh, didn't she sound oh so thrilled?

//Oh...// A beat, and then Jono remembered the conversation that they'd been having, shortly after Jake had turned. //... Oh.//

Right. That.

//How has yer training been going, for that?//

"Training goes well," she said, with a faint smile. "It will continue to do so."

Jono nodded a little. That, at least, was something.

//If there's anything that I can do, luv...? I mean, I'm no great fighter or anything, but I can hold my own, generally.//

He didn't have a glass jaw, at least.

"I cannot think of anything at the moment," Rosalind said, almost gently. "It is years in the future and I have very few details."

It was hard to plan that way.

Years was... something. It was better than the 'maybe tomorrow' that was the best that Didi had ever been able to manage.

He winced all the same, though he tried to hide it.

You know. By looking the other direction and being very interested in a nearby book. That was absolutely believable, there.

//Well, if anything comes up at all...//

"I'll tell you," she said patiently.

And looking his way.

"It's not something that must happen."

Rosalind wouldn't believe that.

//No,// Jono agreed. //With the amount of variations on th'way my own universe turned out, I'm not a fan of thinking that anything is set in stone, myself.//

Still.

//A little unsettling all th'same,// he added.

"Moreso, it seems, for others than for myself," Rosalind still sounded a bit... bewildered about that.

//We care,// Jono replied, shrugging. //Can't help it. You mean something to us, luv.//

"Well," she said, "I'll not dispute that."

Though she still didn't get it, and her tone conveyed that.
