Jono had better things to do today than take in some bloody picnic. Like chill out with the books. Jonothon liked the books, damn it. The only chewing that he was expected to do on them was only in the most figurative sense, and he wasn't expected to do any socializing or speaking to them, and--

Had Jonothon ever mentioned how much he had always wished for this sort of excuse to avoid the hell out of the Welcome Picnic?

This was because Jono was an antisocial plonker.

//Ah, but the newbies will be,// Jono pointed out. //And they might have had decent time on the island by that point to not be too bothered by the island's more... unique residents.//

Voices in their heads, Ariel. In their heads!

And how long did it take Ariel to even realize that's what it was?

"If by unique, you mean coolest, guess what? I think you're really doing them a disservice. But maybe I am a little biased."

//Well, yer unique in yer own special way, I suppose,// Jono allowed, //but yer not exactly...//

He waved a hand at himself. Ever the wordsmith, Jonothon was.

//You don't exactly inspire panic, I mean.//

"I don't think you'll inspire as much as you think you would, Jono," Ariel informed him in a way that suggested she was not going to be swayed on this matter. "I mean, know what you could do? Bring your guitar. Everyone loves music, and if you played your guitar, they'd immediately start out liking you, and everything that falls into place after that starts on a high note."

Jono was now falling into something not unlike a sulk.

//I'd rather they just leave me alone,// he replied. //Last semester, I had people following me around, asking what th'hell makes me tick.//

Okay, so it was mostly one person, and even he'd backed off since. But still!

And that definitely caused a crease in Ariel's brow.

"Like who?"

And, actually, it only occurred to her after she asked that she might have been asking just as much for herself. People wondering too much on how people ticked could be trouble for her, as well.

//Sherlock bloody Holmes,// Jono sighed, and shrugged. //I'm only fortunate that all he really knows about is my telepathy, I suppose.//

There was a bit of a pause.

"Mr. Holmes?" asked Ariel. "Really?"

Then again, she never really paid that much attention in his class. She was either too busy thinking up outlandish stories as solutions to the cases or just thinking about how cute Bruce looked that day.

Jono shrugged.

//I'm a curiosity,// he replied. //Bloke wot smells like ashes and has no jaw, talking into somebody's head? He's a detective, luv. It's what he does.//

That didn't mean that Jono had to like it.

"Well, if he's such a good detective, you'd think he'd have figured it out by now," Ariel responded, looking a little petulant about the whole thing herself. Perhaps it was a good thing she never really paid much attention in class, because what if Mr. Holmes caught wind of her own curiosities? She could definitely feel where Jono was coming from put in that perspective.

She slumped a little on the desk. "That's silly, though," she said. "He shouldn't be so concerned with other people's differences..."

//That's just th'way people are,// Jonothon replied with a shake of his head. //If it isn't like them, they want to know more. Poke and dig and claw it out until they've either figured it out, or broken it in the attempt.//

Jono's opinion of popular opinion of mutants, he'd show it to you.

And those opinions were really doing nothing to make Ariel feel better about admitting she was a mermaid, even if the reception to those who did find out hadn't been too bad. Still, Christian had been pretty freaked out, and this was just reminding her now of Peter's interrogations.

She tried a faint smile. "I don't get it. You're an awesome person; what else does anyone need to know? Who cares about all that other stuff?"

Jonothon shrugged his shoulders again.

//People care,// he said, after a moment's pause. //Maybe not here. Most people here have surprised me, thus far. But back where I'm from... Not a safe place for people like me.//

His hand wandered up and hovered over his bandages for a moment, and just kind of lingered there before he shook his head and lowered it to his side again.

//Honestly, I don't want to go back. The end of this semester isn't... going to be easy.//
