Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"That you'd at least know I was trying to insult you," she explained easily enough. "Not that they'd necessarily hit."

"You trying to insult me, Kate?" Alex wondered. "After I shared my cigarettes with you? How cruel. See if I ever give you anything again."

"I'm not trying to insult you, Alex." Hey, this time she almost let out something resembling a dry laugh. "But I might now that you couldn't keep up with me."

"Pfft. I don't have to keep up with you," he said dismissively, waving a hand. "I'm perfectly fine doing my own thing. If you don't wanna be in it, then hit the road, Blondie."

"Wow, that's original," she snorted. "Unless you're alluding to me having an uncanny resemblance to a young Debbie Harry from this angle, in which case it's actually insightful."

"Yeah, you're not that hot," Alex said, rolling his eyes. "On a scale of one to ten, you're about...a six. Lots of people above you, Blondie."

Kate quirked a brow, a little. "Wow, why so mean all of a sudden?"

She really wasn't all that affected. Outwardly, anyway. Inside it was so much harder to tell.

"You consider that mean?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow. "I thought you had some legendary thick skin or something."

"Well, it's currently pretty bruised," she retorted. "Bruises make stuff hurt more, right?"

"What, like literally?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow. "You fall down some stairs or something?"

Wasn't that the typical excuse?

"Run into a door?"

"Got beat up."

Maybe she said the truth just to see his reaction.

Hey, she was talking to the abused kid. He didn't even flinch.

"By who?"

Even a nonreaction was a reaction. One that Kate found herself appreciating.

"What's left of my best friend," she said evenly. "He's a vampire now."

Vampires. Of course. How lovely.

Alex winced and looked away. When he spoke again, he sounded sincere, at least. "Sorry to hear that. I know what it's like."

"Yeah, it's a barrel of laughs, right?" Kate replied quietly, but voice dripping with sarcasm. One of her hands slid into her pocket for the other cigarette as she held her other hand out for his lighter again. "This place likes giving us experiences like that."

"It'll get better," Alex replied, handing her his lighter without hesitation. "Guy who used to be my roommate ended up a vampire in that weird other universe. I had to kill him."

"I'm sorry." And that was nothing but sincere. Quiet, still, and she kept her eyes on the flame she'd just conjured up from the lighter. "Did you disassociate like crazy? So that it wasn't really him?"

"I tried not to think about it at all," Alex told her, shrugging. "I just buried it with a bunch of other stuff I don't want to think about. Out of sight, out of mind. It's a part of my life I am actively trying to forget."

"Wish I could do that," Kate said mildly, as she was giving him the lighter back. "But it's more of an ongoing situation still, I guess."

"Well, you know, nothing lasts forever," he replied, taking the lighter back. "Not even the shittiest of times."

"Wow, optimism," she said, but it didn't get quite as snarky as she might have meant. "I don't know, it seems like the most that generally happens is that you just get times that are shittier in a different way."

"Fuck you," Alex said without a lot of heat. "I didn't say the bad gave way to the good, did I? I just said nothing lasts forever. Don't lecture me about shitty times. I know what those are."

"Not lecturing you, Alex," she replied, about as mildly. "Just made an observation that you apparently even agree with. But I'll stop bothering you if you want me to."

"You into making assumptions or something?" Alex asked, glancing over at her again. "I didn't say you had to leave me alone. I'd tell you if I wanted you gone."

"Well, some people use 'fuck you' as a way of telling people they're not wanted," she pointed out, flicking ash off the tip of her cigarette. "So it's not a wildly baseless assumption. But I apologize."

Or something.
