Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"And hello to you as well," Rosalind said dryly as, yes, an apple slice went missing.

Scully sat down next to her roommate with a smile. "How did your break go? Any weirdly interesting new people stop by?"

"I haven't been here long," she admitted, "so little chance of that, but my break was--quite nice. I took Elena to a beach."

Rosalind glanced at her roommate. "And you?"

"Weirdly fraught." She grimaced. "Although your suggestion of telling my brother that my ... condition was due to government work helped, slightly. At least he stopped demanding explanations." Scully looked briefly amused. "And my nephews wanted to play with me more."

"Because you were closer to their age?" she guessed, amused. "That can't have been relaxing however."

"Exhausting. But uncomplicated." Scully took a bite of her apple slice, trying to look on the bright side. "And my young brother, Charlie, wasn't a jerk about it. Shocked, but he got over it." She smiled at Rosalind. "How was the beach with Elena? Are things going well with her?"

"Elena is... Elena," she said, sounding a bit amused as she nibbled on a slice of her own. "We had fun, I think. Enough that she didn't want to go back."

"That's good." Rosalind's future problems with Elena could only be helped by getting to spend time with her. And Scully envied her the chance to be with her sister. "It's very ... disorienting, that this place is feeling so familiar now."

Her family wasn't home, D.C. wasn't home, her mother was almost home, but....

"It's been quite a while now," she pointed out, "and we're living here, day in and day out."

"True." Scully considered. "I have to do something pro-active this semester toward changing that, or I'm going to get too comfortable."

The day she actually thought she was 15, it was all over. She'd run yelling off the island, straight to the FBI and demand her junior agent badge.

"Have you any ideas as to what you could do?" she asked curiously.

"Magic's out," Scully said, frowning. "At least from what I found in Special Collections. That leaves science. Which I'm more comfortable with anyway." She spread her hands. "Somewhere in this school has to be someone who would know of an aging process. Of some kind. I'm only going back into the Library stacks if it's to help a friend, or a last resort."

"That's tricker," she said, frowning. "As you have to hope that someone with the knowledge you need does attend the school."

Scully grimaced. "At least I have a few years to figure it out, and if I actually concentrate on that I'll get upset, but... if I just take it a day at a time, maybe I'll find something. Or a portal, a vortex..."

Some way to grow up to 35 and then go home?

"Maybe," she said carefully, "you could talk to Portalocity and find out what worlds are moving at a faster time than ours is. You'd still have to live out the days, but coming back here would mean not much time had passed."

"That... might be a serious option." One that would keep her from losing her mind, if this went on for longer than a year. "I can go back to my D.C. in 2000 at any time now, anyway." She shook herself. "Anyway. Re-earning college credits is still on the agenda this semester."

"What courses are you taking this semester?" she asked, tilting her head while picking out another apple slice.

"Chemistry, Parapsychology, Psionics through the school," and Home Ec, though she didn't know it yet, "And Russian, Calc III, and more physics online." She tilted her head. "You? Any of those?"

"Parapsychology?" she asked, a bit dubiously. "Was that on the list?"

"Taught by a Dr. Saltzman. I think it was listed as 'Paranormal Activity 101'. Which, if it's useful, will be great. And if it's not... well." She smirked a little. "The teacher will learn something from the island, at least."

"Depending on the definition of paranormal you're going by," she said, almost lightly. "I'm in that one, and--Primatology."

...Rosalind wasn't sure what to make of that, no.

"You're studying great apes?" Scully asked, mildly surprised. "Paperwork error, or .. .why?"

"Paperwork error," she said, very dryly. "I would not have bothered on my own."

Seeeriously.

"Always safer to check," Scully said, holding up her hands. "Well. It'll be different. And hopefully the teacher will be good. We seem to have quite a few new ones this semester."

"We do," she allowed. "Did you see that the director of the theatre has become a teacher?"
