Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

Overhearing this, Scully looked over with a raised eyebrow. "To be fair, some of these people are from other decades."

Including herself.

"Like that's an excu--" Oh, Caroline realized it was probably best not to insult the decade-challenged to their faces. "I mean, I was just thinking how I doubted there was a decent shop here, you know?"

Scully gave her a sardonic look for the slip, but looked thoughtful and said, "There's a few. Pixie Dust has some nice things. There's a remnant shop too, if you like that look." She was betting the new girl didn't. "And the basics at Turtle & Canary." She quirked a smile. "Are you used to Park Avenue or Rodeo Drive?" In which case, doomed to disappointment.

"God, I wish," Caroline sighed. "Mystic Falls is like, two hours from a decent mall. I have to beg my mom to make the trip."

"Ahhh. What state? And at least Baltimore has some very good malls across the Causeway," Scully responded, studying the girl with restrained curiosity. "I'm Dana Scully. Sophomore."

"Virginia," she replied, making a little face before she remembered shopping. "Oh my God, I almost died when we drove in to Alexandria. Ric refused to stop at the Nordstroms, but I'm betting I can get him to let me borrow the car some weekend. I'm Caroline Forbes...I'm not sure what class I'm in." Huh.

"Ric?" Scully prompted, then found herself smiling at the new girl's enthusiasm. "Well, wouldn't you be in the same one you were in before?" She paused, then added, "Actually, forget I asked that, if it's too personal. Some people come here for really weird reasons."

"Oh, right I should probably call him Professor Saltzman," Caroline said, rolling her eyes a little at the title. Though she was seriously happy Dana didn't ask more about the class year. "He's the hot new history teacher, though I am totally not into him. I leave old dudes to Jenna."

"Is Jenna new here too?" Saltzman, Saltzman... "I think I'm signed up for his course. Parapsychology?" she checked. And yes, not following up on the 'what class' question. It'd be obvious soon enough. "He's a friend of your family's?"

"Oh God no, Jenna's like, super old." Twenty-three! "Yeah, Ric's teaching something paranormal. I don't know, I'm supposed to be his assistant and learn things, blah blah blah."

Scully couldn't help the snicker there, then sobered a bit. She herself probably qualified as really ancient.

"Not in it for the academics, or don't like the topic?"

"Oh." It wasn't like Caroline would ever be heading to college now, thus totally off her radar. "Yeah, that would probably be important."

"Although this school tends to be much more hands-on than academic," Scully said, deadpan. "Crisis management. Danger negotiations. Diplomatic abilities. That kind of thing." She paused. "And I think we have a cheerleading team."

...no, she's not actually from another planet.
