Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"You're the first that's talked to me today," she replied, with a bit of a sigh. "Maybe if you'd waited a bit."

"It's a chicobo," Ino added, "baby chocobo. From Reno's world."

"What can I say? I'm an impatient sort of person." Yeah. Right.

"It's very... yellow." Brilliant observation there, Triela.

"Of course," she said, glancing her way. "You're both how you're meant to be."

And the chicobo was going to warble happily at that.

That earned Ino an amused little eyeroll. "How are you doing, anyway?" Obviously not as bad as she could be. Ino hadn't lost any of her snark, at least.

"Utterly miserable," Ino said, honestly. "And you?"

Because was going to work, absolutely.

"As well as can be expected." Then, before Ino could call her out for the evasiveness there, "What happened?"

Ino eyed her. "Should I be asking you that?"

With an answer like that...

"Trade you an answer for an answer?" Triela offered after a moment.

After all, she'd probably have to tell Ino sooner or later anyway...

"Somehow," she said, with a sigh. "I think I'll have more to say than you will."

And her chicobo cheeped supportively.

"Well, I've gotten the impatience out. I can listen."

It was sort of like a supportive cheep.

Which was equally adorable from the both of them.

"You first?"

Which came out a little more plaintive than she might have liked.

That... was fair. Given how Ino looked she might well need time to work up to it.

So Triela nodded.

"My Conditioning is failing," she said softly. "No one's sure, but it's likely that I'll be permanently hospitalized within six months."

Ino blinked. Oh.

So she was... basically losing another friend. Right there.

"That's..." What could she say? "I'm sorry."

Triela shook her head. "Actually, I've already set a record for survivability. I'm enough of an outlier that they could be wrong, you know."

They probably weren't, but it was at least a possibility.

"I hope they are," she said, frowning a bit. "Is there anything I can do?"

"Well... there is something." Triela paused and shook her head. "I'll explain it later, though."

She didn't want to get too side-tracked from figuring out what was up with Ino, after all. Triela didn't have too much time left, she'd rather spend it on helping her friends than having them worry about her.

And Ino would rather do the other way around, funny that.

She nodded slowly. "Alright," Ino said, "I'll expect you to tell me then."

Triela nodded. "I will." After all, she was actually on a schedule with this one.

Ino rubbed at her face and sighed.

"My turn, huh?"

Yes, Ino.

Triela just sat silently, waiting. Ino could take her time that way.

No pressure!

Plenty of pressure!

Ino petted her chicobo, which trilled happily and settled down in her lap. "It started, I suppose, before the break," she said, keeping her head down. "And just got worse from there."

Triela stayed silent. She suspected that Ino was still working up to telling her... whatever. No need to interrupt or rush her.

Right?

Ino kept her gaze focused on her... pet, she supposed... as she thought of what to say.

"Due to events prior to the break," Ino settled on finally, "I went to Konoha for a--vacation. Zack came with me."

She chewed her lip.

"Konoha was--attacked." Flat flat flat. "It doesn't exist anymore."

And that was just the start of her crappy holiday.

"Oh."

That sucked. Not that Triela knew what else to say...

"Yeah," she said softly. More to the chicobo than--anyone else.
