Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Witches?" Hey, astronauts was totally normal. For a kid who invented an exo-suit.

"Witches," Ender agreed. "If you're interested to see the magic users in action, I think there's a meeting every Wednesday. Just don't expect everyone to stick to the regular laws of physics."

"My brain won't explode or anything, right?"

"Not unless you piss one of them off."

Note to self: Design witch-proof helmet.

"I can't tell if you're messing with me or not."

"Ask anyone," Ender said, with a hint of amused resignation, "I'm the last person on this island to try messing with you. It's a little pointlessly cruel to play pranks on people who don't even know what they're walking into and just need a hand, isn't it?"

Tony had to give a rueful little laugh at that. "Yeah, it is."

Oddly, all he could think of was that Emma Frost girl.

"If I say something works a certain way, then it does, or it's my best guess to the cause," he continued. "I can promise you that."

"Thanks," Tony said again. "Good to know someone here will be straight with me about things. Rhodey was the only person back home who did that. Well, he was also the only other kid my age I knew..."

Because Rhodey had no problem calling him out when he was being dumb. Which was why they were besties. BESTIES.

And Whitney didn't count. She was scary.

"What kind of home situation are you coming from, anyway?" Ender asked, interested. "I don't think the old you went to boarding school, or at least not this one."

"I didn't go to any school until now," Tony replied with a sigh. "My dad pulled me out when I was young--" And his mom passed. "--and now I have to graduate to keep the company."

Since his dad was dead. DAMN IT, MARVEL.

Ender frowned. "Problems with the succession?" he guessed. "I'm sorry; it's going to be an adjustment for you."

"He felt guilty or something about me not going to a real school." And working for the company instead. "It was part of his will. I have to graduate from a normal high school and then I get the company back."

No GED test for him.

Now if that didn't parallel Ender's situation in some bizarre, topsy-turvy, on-drugs kind of way... He didn't say anything stupid or inane like 'I'm sorry for your loss', but nodded instead. "At least you picked one that shouldn't be too hard to graduate," he said, "If that's all you're looking for."

Which was kinda nice. He'd had enough of people saying stupid things like that. Like it would make everything better by saying they were sorry.

"The sooner, the better," Tony replied with a nod. He cleared his throat to get rid of whatever emotion had crept in there. "What about you?"

"I served in the military before this, if you'll believe it," Ender said. Showing just a glimpse of the weirdness of his background kept people from pushing too hard for smoething special. "But they came to their senses and sent me to serve my time here, first."

It was a very gentle twisting of the truth.

"You can't be much older than me, though." THANKS FOR THE OBVIOUS, TONY.

"I'm seventeen," Ender said, and left Tony to come to his own conclusions. It was usually safer that way.

"Sixteen," Tony replied like that helped. "They only have people in the military at eighteen here. There."

He shook his head. "You know what I mean."

"Times change," Ender said, simply, "As do the demands of the military. But I'm free and clear and just a normal student, now."

Who was going to be a governor as soon as he graduated, but, details.

Tony shook his head. "I hope that's not my future then. No offense," he added. "My dad sa--said that the technology we make should be to help people, not hurt them."

Yes, this Howard Stark was a pacifist.

"The problem with technology," Ender said, sounding a little wistful, "Is that no matter what its intended purpose, the military will find a way to use it to blow someone out of the sky."

"Yeah." What a pair of Debbie Downers. "When I get control of the company again, I can make sure none of my designs are used for that, though."

"That's a start," he said, "But it's an even bigger step to try and make sure we have less enemies to blow up to begin with." A beat. Ender shook his head. "But hell, we're teenagers."

He wasn't finishing that thought because he didn't want to all-out lie to the kid.

Tony snorted, nodding in agreement with that. "This other me... did he have a lab?"
