Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

"Sixteen," Tony replied like that helped. "They only have people in the military at eighteen here. There."

He shook his head. "You know what I mean."

"Times change," Ender said, simply, "As do the demands of the military. But I'm free and clear and just a normal student, now."

Who was going to be a governor as soon as he graduated, but, details.

Tony shook his head. "I hope that's not my future then. No offense," he added. "My dad sa--said that the technology we make should be to help people, not hurt them."

Yes, this Howard Stark was a pacifist.

"The problem with technology," Ender said, sounding a little wistful, "Is that no matter what its intended purpose, the military will find a way to use it to blow someone out of the sky."

"Yeah." What a pair of Debbie Downers. "When I get control of the company again, I can make sure none of my designs are used for that, though."

"That's a start," he said, "But it's an even bigger step to try and make sure we have less enemies to blow up to begin with." A beat. Ender shook his head. "But hell, we're teenagers."

He wasn't finishing that thought because he didn't want to all-out lie to the kid.

Tony snorted, nodding in agreement with that. "This other me... did he have a lab?"

"At the local branch of Stark's," he said. "It's a Fixer-Uppers now. Or rather, the Fixer-Uppers. You can tell us by the lens flare on the logo."

A little dryly, that last part.

"Oh." Well, there went that idea. "There's got to be other places here to work in, right?"

"Depends on what you're looking for."

"Just somewhere where I won't get interrupted and people won't freak out if I'm using a wielder."

Rhodey's mom was a bit overprotective.

"Your own room, if your roommate can deal with it and you don't need that much space," Ender said, shrugging as he thought. "Otherwise, we've got a lot of places -- abandoned warehouses in the district, Selkie Peak if you want caves... none of those would be tech-ready, of course."

He might as well steer Tony away from the more dangerous parts of the island, because it was obvious the kid was going to do something.

"I'll look into that," Tony replied. "Are the classes here actually that interesting?"

"Depends," Ender said, "Most of them are more curiosities, than anything else. Others offer practical advice."

"So, it's not normal school then?"

"If there is such a thing as a normal high school," he replied, "Then you are not in it."

"I was told there would be people way smarter than me here, though. If that's the case, I should have gone to high school ages ago."

"We're kind of a once-in-a-lifetime place," Ender answered, wryly, "For better or for worse."

"It would be kinda nice," Tony admitted. "Usually only my dad was on the same level about some of the science back home. We used to have a kind of competition to see who could outsmart the other."

"I bet you got a lot of work done those days," Ender said, and if he sounded a little more distant, well.

Battle School's officials had always loved using that same technique to put the pressure on the kids. It made Ender think of that now, if only for a second.

"Yeah." Tony glanced down at his hands for a moment.

"It'll get better," Ender said. It wasn't a platitude, because he knew that was how things went. "Eventually, he's going to be in the back of your head, helping you push on to bigger and greater things."

"I hope so." Tony felt a lot smaller than he was for a moment before shaking it off again. It kinda worked. "School will help, I guess."

"You're going to help yourself," he said, "I'm fairly sure of that."

He'd met the older Tony. "Good luck, Tony."
