BWI Portalocity Lounge [Sunday morning]

While Ramona had seen a lot of things, and traveling by portal hadn't really freaked her out or anything, she still wasn't really feeling great about being here. Maybe making an impulse decision to go to Maryland (of all places) hadn't been her best move.

In any case, though, she was here now, and there wasn't really a reason for her to turn back without giving it at least a day or so. So she lounged against the wall under the sign for Fandom High in the lounge, her bags by her feet as she waited for the shuttle.

"My mother's mother," Sov clarified.

"Oh," Tony replied. That made so much more sense. Probably a regional dialect. "So, did you go to a school before this?"

He needed to find someone else who knew what they were supposed to expect here. He didn't have Rhodey to cling to!

"I was taught with my hearth siblings until a year ago when I started my apprenticeship in a carpentry workshop." They shrugged. "I hope this will be more interesting."

"Apprenticeship?" Tony just had to ask. "Is that common around here?"

"Around where?" Sov asked, a little surprised. "This isn't Rer."

"Is that a city?"

"It's the oldest city on Gethen," Sov replied, a hint of pride in their voice.

Just go with it, Tony. "I'm from New York," he offered. "It's... pretty old too, I think."

History? Not his strong suit. That was his dad's thing.

"I haven't heard of it," Sov replied. Of course, they didn't know of many cities on other planets. "How come you're going to Fandom?"

"My--" Tony swallowed something back that had nothing to do with science at all and everything to do with him being a emo sack of emo sometimes. "--my dad wanted me to go to high school."

Sov just nodded. Tony didn't seem quite happy about this, but they wasn't going to ask questions.

"I haven't gone since I was really young," Tony added, shaking his head to clear whatever non-sciencey thoughts that had brought him down.

Hey, he was totally allowed. It was pretty recent still!

"Have you been taught in some other way?" Sov asked. That didn't seem strange, if it was the case.

"I worked in my dad's lab." That was something to make him smile, at least. "Mechanics and engineering."

Oh, Sov. You've done this to yourself. "Lots of things," he replied proudly. "I have a record of patents for someone my age."

Not sure what patents was, Sov chose to focus on the building of things. "Can you build a radio?"

"I was thinking of the kind that picks up broadcasts," Sov replied.

"Just for that? Not to communicate? Long-range, short-range," Tony babbled. "I can make any of them!"

"I like listening to the broadcasts," Sov replied, a little defensively.

"Oh." Hey, science was awesome. "That's cool too," he added quickly. "I think you can buy something like that probably, though."

"I brought my own," Sov replied, the proud they felt of owning one showing. "But I don't know how to build one. Is it hard?"

Tony had to pause for a moment. "Not for me. How much do you know about mechanics?"
