The Science of Deduction, Friday

There was absolutely nothing special about the classroom today. Despite, or perhaps because, the fact that this should be their final exam.

"I have no intention of giving you a test today," Sherlock informed them kindly as he typed something into his phone. "If you hadn't realized I have no patience for traditional academia, you have already failed this class. The few of you who have learned something would do best to find a case of their own. The rest... I trust will find solace in whatever celebration for the end of the semester you have planned."

Looking up from his phone finally, Sherlock gave them all a critical once over. "If you must do something, read your classmates. Miss Frost, of course, is at an advantage, but don't let that deter you."

"I have no idea," Ben said, laughing again. "What's a Dodadistical?"

"Oh, you know," Ariel waved a dismissive hand. "It's one of those...things. Those little...round things, like this," her fingers made a little circle, thumb to forefinger, "usually made from metal and sometimes with a little chain, and there's glass in it, and you look through it and it's supposed to tell you if the person you're looking at through it is lying or not..."

She shrugged.

"It's probably called something different here, like how dinglehoppers are called forks."

Ben looked at her blankly, then shrugged. "Could be. I'm not exactly from Earth either."

"I've got one in my room," Ariel offered, "in my collection, but it's got a cracked glass so I don't think it works. There are a lot of really fascinating things here, though, that's for sure..."

She sort of wanted to ask where he was from, but she didn't want that question turned back on her.

"What's your favorite so far?" Ben asked.

That was easy!

"My shuttlecock!" Ariel said in a voice a little too loud so that anyone who might not have been following their conversation might wonder what the hell they were discussing. "I got it from a class this summer, too! I'd never seen anything like it before, but it's definitely my favorite in my collection."

Ben had a sudden image of the stock at 'Dite's. "What does it look like?" he asked, already regretting the question.

"Oh, it's great," said Ariel, completely oblivious and trying to help with gestures. "It's really lightweight, and it fans out at the bottom with the little rounded rubber part at the end..."
momslilassassin: ([neg] uh oh)

Ben's eyes went wide. "Um."

Mind out of the gutter, Skywalker.

"After that," Ariel continued, leaning her chin thoughtfully on her palm, "I'd have to go with the steering column..."

A statement which would surely prove just how far into the gutter Ben had gone...

Ben choked.

Not dirty.

Ish.

"Do they work together?" he asked faintly.

"Oh, no," Ariel shook her head and giggled. "Don't be silly; they're two completely different things."

"Oh good," Ben replied, looking very relieved. "I just had to check."

"Although," Ariel said, eyes narrowing thoughtfully as she tapped her chin, "now you've got me wondering..."

"How they could work together," Ariel supplied. "It would be tricky, I think, to really incorporate the steering column, but if you got a little creative..."

Ben's eyes bugged out a little. "What would you want it to do?"

And Ariel could really only smile. That bugged out expression was exactly the sort of thing she'd expect from Flounder.

"Just to see if I could, of course."
