Anakin came into the classroom and shook a small pile of powdered sugar from his robe. Fandom weather was enough to make you sigh some days.

"This semester we've covered six of the seven deadly sins," Anakin began, listing them off on his fingers, "lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, envy, and pride. That leaves us with sloth." He gave the class a brief smile. "Though gluttony might have been more appropriate to discuss right after Thanksgiving, where the tradition seems to be to eat until you burst. Regardless, sloth was originally described as 'an uneasiness of the mind'," he continued. "Apathy. Melancholy. Joylessness. And importantly, the decision not to do anything about it."

He leaned back against his desk. "The modern view understands that the mind is more complicated than that and sometimes it is impossible to will yourself not to be sad. Instead, this sin now focuses on the failure to utilize your talents and gifts." He glanced around the room. "In a school filled with as many talented beings as this one, I think it would be almost criminal to not live up to the potential each of you has. Today, pair up and talk about what your plans for the future are, and how the classes you've taken and the people you've met here will help you in your greater life goals."

You know, a really easy subject.

"Oh, and Mister Starsmore, please see me after class."

"So noted," Anakin replied. "What happened?"

Kennedy considered for a moment, trying to figure out how to phrase this without giving away too much. (Hey, look at that; she was actually learning how to think before she opened her mouth.)

"Friend in trouble. Had to go help. It's sort of my thing."

"That seems to be the motto of half the school," Anakin said with a tiny smile. "It's a wonder you get to class at all."

"Seems to be the inconvenience of all the bad things not happening right at the school," Kennedy began, then grimaced-- thus proving that while she was learning to think about what came out of her mouth, she still had a long way to go. "Um... not that I'm saying they should."

Anakin smirked. "You're to blame for the next invasion of bad things, then?"

Kennedy didn't exactly facepalm, but she looked like she wanted to.

"I was looking to set the bar of things people blame me for higher?" she tried.

Anakin chuckled. "You scored a clean miss on that objective."

One corner of Kennedy's mouth quirked up. "A clean miss? And here I was hoping to at least scratch it."

"Sorry," Anakin said, not looking remotely sorry.

"You don't look like it," Kennedy said easily. "Anyway, do I, uh, have to do anything to make up for missing that class?"

"Babysit my daughter," Anakin replied.

He was kidding.

And yet Kennedy looked like he'd just handed her a toothpick and told her to go after a demon with what amounted to armored plating.

"Oh, god, can I pick option B?"

"Wrapping all of my holiday gifts?" Anakin replied.

What an excellent example of an ethics teacher he was.

"That sounds," Kennedy answered, managing to sound more joking than accusatory, "like it goes in the Bad Idea column of ways to give students detention. Also, you've never seen the disaster that is me with Scotch tape and wrapping paper."

This was usually why she paid to have giftwrapping done.

"Fair enough," Anakin said. "Write me a 500 word paper about the dangers of lust interfering with decision-making and we'll call it even."

Instead, she let her shoulders sag for a moment, then drew herself up and nodded. "Five hundred words. I can do that."

She probably had a couple thousand words' worth of personal anecdotes she could draw on, but never mind...

He smiled. "Then I'll see you next week."

"Gotcha," Kennedy replied, nodding shortly as she began to head for the door. "Next week."
