Ethics [Thursday, December 2, 2nd period]

Anakin came into the classroom and shook a small pile of powdered sugar from his robe. Fandom weather was enough to make you sigh some days.

"This semester we've covered six of the seven deadly sins," Anakin began, listing them off on his fingers, "lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, envy, and pride. That leaves us with sloth." He gave the class a brief smile. "Though gluttony might have been more appropriate to discuss right after Thanksgiving, where the tradition seems to be to eat until you burst. Regardless, sloth was originally described as 'an uneasiness of the mind'," he continued. "Apathy. Melancholy. Joylessness. And importantly, the decision not to do anything about it."

He leaned back against his desk. "The modern view understands that the mind is more complicated than that and sometimes it is impossible to will yourself not to be sad. Instead, this sin now focuses on the failure to utilize your talents and gifts." He glanced around the room. "In a school filled with as many talented beings as this one, I think it would be almost criminal to not live up to the potential each of you has. Today, pair up and talk about what your plans for the future are, and how the classes you've taken and the people you've met here will help you in your greater life goals."

You know, a really easy subject.

"Oh, and Mister Starsmore, please see me after class."

"Because your world would rather hunt you, of course," Elphaba remarked. "I'd almost forgotten, I'm sorry."

Jono shrugged a little.

//I'd be an easy enough target,// he noted, wryly. //But if things were different, I might. What about you? Have you got any big plans for after graduation?//

"Tending to my sister," Elphaba said. "While I'm sure Master Skywalker would tell me my possibilities are unlimited, I will probably be tending to Nessa when she attends Shiz University when she is old enough. Many venues are... closed to me, in Oz."

//And once she graduates from University? Yer life can't be finished with then and there?//

It was weird, when Jonothon tried to find a bright side somewhere.

"Well, I imagine she'll keep me around. Give me some terrible ceremonial role once she's governor," Elphaba said. "If she doesn't need me to tend to her then, well... I may return here."

//Not a bad place to be,// Jono replied, nodding thoughtfully. //If I didn't feel so... stupidly obligated to try to make some sort of difference back in my own reality, I'd probably head back here, too.//

But then, anything could happen between now and then.

"It's a rather interesting conundrum," Elphaba said. "Either remain an outcast at home, or move to a place where I'd be an outsider. Even accepted as I am here, I'd still be the green girl far away from home."

//And I'm th'telepathic bloke on fire, far away from home,// Jono pointed out, raising an eyebrow. //Luv, if you keep categorizing yerself that way here, that's how people are going to see it. But I know I'm in no place to judge. I know most people aren't in any place to it. We both look different. I could level a city block by accident and yet I don't see myself as the outsider here, much as I'd like to. I'd like to think there's a big bloody difference.//

"You misunderstand, or maybe I didn't explain it properly" Elphaba said. "I'm not questioning the acceptance. But I'd be alone in the sense of people from Oz. It's not about my skin but where I'm from. And abandoning the world I grew up in for a place where there's no Animals and I have to explain things like Lurlinemas... Fandom would take a long time to become home, if that is clear."

Jono eyed her for a moment, but finally, he shrugged.

//If that's yer criteria, luv, then we're all outsiders. All of th'students are just passing through, just th'same way you are.//

Which he hated, just a little. One more full semester, and then he had to figure out what he was going to do with himself.

"There's a bit of a difference," Elphaba said. "Some people are familiar with this world, at least versions of it. There aren't as many of us who come from places that aren't Earth. But you're right, we are all outsiders in many ways."
