So You Say You Want a Revolution: Week 13, Period 3

The class had been notified to meet in the Danger Shop, and that was where they found Aly who was looking slightly gleeful as she made sure the final settings were correct.  Once everyone had come in, she turned to clasp her hands in front of her and greet the students.

"Good day, everyone.  We're talking about explosions today.  Mostly because I like them, but also because they an be a great strategic weapon in a street fight.  We won't have time to cover all types of explosives - there's another class for that this term - but I very quickly want to mention pipe bombs and molotov cocktails - two types of improvised explosives that you can pretty much make anywhere.  They are both nice bombs, but they're a bit sloppy.  They're street weapons more than tactical weapons, and they can't necessarily be directed towards strategic goals."

"This isn't to say that there isn't a place for that type of weapon.  In a revolution, you use any weapon you can get your hands upon.  But unless you're planning on simply erecting barricades in the streets and never moving beyond that - and that rarely works as an overall strategy - you're going to have to move to a more strategic outlook."

"We did this twice while fighting in the Copper Isles.  The first time," a shadow and then a look of triumph crossed Aly's face quickly, "we destroyed the Rajmuat slave docks.  It was a message to the King and to his Spymaster - that they couldn't stop us and they couldn't continue to profit off the labour of slaves.  The second time, the capital's armory was blown up to distract the soldiers for a bit while we set up for the endgame.  Strategic use of explosives - they're a means to an end.  Not the end itself."

"What I've done today is given each group a structure to decide how to destroy.  We're not focusing on the actuality of the explosives this time.  Let's assume that you have an co-conspirator who can handle the making of the bombs.  What I want you to do is decide where to place them and discuss the possible problems with destroying these bridges and forts and the possible issues that may arise while attacking them."

"If you have someone in your group who has the magic to deal with the situation, that's fine.  You can use that, but I'd like you also to look at the problem without magic."

"After you've made your plan, the Danger Shop has all these structures programmed in.  You can choose where to want to place your devices and see how big an explosion you can make."

"Questions?  Ideas?  Worries?"

They were going to blow up a bridge? Percy couldn't say he wasn't entirely psyched up for this. He'd made a volcano explode so he thought a bridge would be cake.

"This shouldn't seem like so much potential fun, should it?" Cally asked, eying the bridge schematics with a grin.

That was totally Ino bouncing, why yes, as she tried to decide how to do this. Bye bye Houses of Parliament!

Glee!

Blowing up ammunition? Sounded like fun. "This would be the perfect time for someone to say they can make fire."

"I can get something that makes fire," Luke said, wiggling his fingers at Nico.

"Is there no limit to what you can conjure?" Nico wondered wryly, only a little jealous when confronted with useful gifts.

"Well if I get too much in one go I have to take a break," Luke said with a shrug. "Took me a few hours to work up that entertainment system you love so much."

"What's not to love about entertainment?" Way to get Nico thinking longingly of the video games he had to put down for class, Luke.

"I dunno, seems that most people at camp save for those Hephaestus guys would rather go outside or something," Luke said. "Weirdos."

Somewhere his father, the god of athletics, was facepalming.

"Yeah, and they'd probably like waking with the sun. Okay, not like anyone wouldn't mind waking with Apollo - minus the poetry, but that's not the point." Did he have a point? Right, Apollo was hot. And a bastard.

Luke lifted his eyebrows. "Have a crush on Apollo, huh?"

He personally couldn't stand the dude, as much as he was flattered by people comparing their looks.

"Maybe," Nico shrugged. "He never let me drive his chariot though." See? Bastard.

"Aww, poor you, not being able to drive the sun," Luke teased. "You'd probably set half the country on fire."

"No way, I'd be a great driver," Nico said. Not that he'd ever really needed to steer anything not on the Xbox. "You ever had the privilege?"

"Uh, no," Luke said. "I don't really like Apollo so I try to avoid him."

Hey, he had a good reason for it.

"Yeah, he's probably not going to like me pretty soon," Nico realized, given how much potential he possessed for screwing up the god's prophecies. "What's your beef with the god?"

How about a little fire, Nico?

"This all seems ridiculously violent. But I suppose if there's gunpowder there, we'd want to explode that first, to set off a chain reaction."

When in the Upland, do as the Uplanders do, after all.

"It's not like a revolution can be won without a little violence." Or a lot. Nico thought a lot was more fun. "But setting off the ammunition would be a good idea."

"I preferred this class when it was more about subterfuge," Elphaba admitted. "At least with a depot we're not likely to hurt innocents."

"Okay," Rinoa said. "We'll need to bring the hanger down, and we'll need to make sure the runway is totally unusable. We have explosives. How do we want to do this? Evenly spaced potholes?"
