So You Say You Want a Revolution: Week 13, Period 3

The class had been notified to meet in the Danger Shop, and that was where they found Aly who was looking slightly gleeful as she made sure the final settings were correct.  Once everyone had come in, she turned to clasp her hands in front of her and greet the students.

"Good day, everyone.  We're talking about explosions today.  Mostly because I like them, but also because they an be a great strategic weapon in a street fight.  We won't have time to cover all types of explosives - there's another class for that this term - but I very quickly want to mention pipe bombs and molotov cocktails - two types of improvised explosives that you can pretty much make anywhere.  They are both nice bombs, but they're a bit sloppy.  They're street weapons more than tactical weapons, and they can't necessarily be directed towards strategic goals."

"This isn't to say that there isn't a place for that type of weapon.  In a revolution, you use any weapon you can get your hands upon.  But unless you're planning on simply erecting barricades in the streets and never moving beyond that - and that rarely works as an overall strategy - you're going to have to move to a more strategic outlook."

"We did this twice while fighting in the Copper Isles.  The first time," a shadow and then a look of triumph crossed Aly's face quickly, "we destroyed the Rajmuat slave docks.  It was a message to the King and to his Spymaster - that they couldn't stop us and they couldn't continue to profit off the labour of slaves.  The second time, the capital's armory was blown up to distract the soldiers for a bit while we set up for the endgame.  Strategic use of explosives - they're a means to an end.  Not the end itself."

"What I've done today is given each group a structure to decide how to destroy.  We're not focusing on the actuality of the explosives this time.  Let's assume that you have an co-conspirator who can handle the making of the bombs.  What I want you to do is decide where to place them and discuss the possible problems with destroying these bridges and forts and the possible issues that may arise while attacking them."

"If you have someone in your group who has the magic to deal with the situation, that's fine.  You can use that, but I'd like you also to look at the problem without magic."

"After you've made your plan, the Danger Shop has all these structures programmed in.  You can choose where to want to place your devices and see how big an explosion you can make."

"Questions?  Ideas?  Worries?"

"No way, I'd be a great driver," Nico said. Not that he'd ever really needed to steer anything not on the Xbox. "You ever had the privilege?"

"Uh, no," Luke said. "I don't really like Apollo so I try to avoid him."

Hey, he had a good reason for it.

"Yeah, he's probably not going to like me pretty soon," Nico realized, given how much potential he possessed for screwing up the god's prophecies. "What's your beef with the god?"

Now there was something Luke didn't want to talk about. It's not like he could share that he knew he was involved with a bad prophecy, since then he'd have to share how he knew and, wow, we were not gonna get on the subject of his mother.

"I don't like bad poetry," he said after a moment. That was a bad lie, and Luke knew Nico would know it. Percy would have fallen for it. Maybe.

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes Nico really wished he could hear Luke's point of view on some of these things. Sure, he knew a lot of Luke's story based on his own research, but it would be different coming from him.

But poetry? Yeah, Nico knew when he was being blown off. "Right. We had that conversation."

Luke sighed, feeling bad that he couldn't have come up with a better lie. He wasn't even sure if he could have come up with one Nico would have believed. "Sorry. Just some stuff I don't like to talk about."

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And now Nico felt bad for even asking. "Yeah, I know not wanting to talk about stuff. Why don't you pretend I asked who you've got a crush on and then I'll just make faces while you think about that other TA."

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Which other TA?" he asked. Yeah, he could play dumb if he wanted. "The tiny blonde one is cute."

Nico rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah, bet she reminds you of Annabeth."

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dude, Annabeth's like eleven," Luke said, wrinkling up his nose.

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nico remembered her as a bit older than that. Besides, how old was this Percy? "What, you don't like 'em younger?"

That just sounded wrong coming out of Nico's mouth.

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Nico was such a creeper.

"I don't mind younger--" Might've been a glance in Percy's direction at that. "--but I'd prefer it if they've hit puberty."

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It was still beyond weird to Nico that the two of them got along so...well.

"Well, all these guys are hitting their 20s when I'm from so it's a little different here." Nico was usually the younger one, after all.

"That's pretty screwed up," Luke said, shaking his head. "Not that I can talk. I'm supposed to be almost 19 in my universe...I wonder if I'll age rapidly as soon as I step foot there..."

That'd be terrifying.

"Ooh, you could match Percy with the gray hair!" Not that he wouldn't eventually anyway...

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Shut up, no I won't," Luke said, running a hand though his hair like it already started happening or something. "I'd just get taller or something. 19 is not that old."

At least he'd keep telling himself that, anyway.

Maybe it was a good thing his vain ass wouldn't make it past 23.

"You're saying that to an eighty year old, you know," Nico teased. He looked damn good for his age. "Think Fandom would really cause that to happen?"

"Yes. This island hates everybody," Luke said. "If it hasn't done anything terrible to you, just wait. It will."

"How terrible are we talking?" A day of forced honesty he could deal with.

"Well that day I couldn't lie was bad. And I didn't particularly like being a girl," Luke said. "But I'd say the worst was when this vortex thingy transported me to this underwater city where I had to kill people because they were trying to kill me."

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh great, remind me of being a girl!" Nico had really effectively blocked that from his mind until today. "Wait, wait, you had to kill humans?"

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. I mean...there was something wrong with them," he said, like that made it better. "But they were still mortal."

And funnily enough, after killing the first one Luke didn't feel much about killing the others.

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That really didn't sound good. Or positive for Luke's future. "That's...wow. I could live without getting sent anywhere more insane than the Underworld."

Re: Nico's Group [Rev 12-1]

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"It was bad. That place...when I got there I pretty much landed on top of a dead body," Luke said. "And I'm not much for water in the first place, so being in a city that was completely underwater was bad. I like the air. Flying. Any place where I can make a quick exit."

Which made sense considering who his father and grandfather were.

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Underwater? Sounds like someone else's Elysium. So you're trapped underwater with murderous humans...why?" This really was lacking in the sense department for Nico.
