Languages, 10/26

To his Classics students, Dream delivers a lecture on Koine Greek. After he is done, he puts forward a question for discussion: What were the benefits of Koine as an international language? Are international languages still valuable?

For his Languages of Asia students, he passes out calligraphy paper, pens, and a primer on Chinese writing. Work on understanding why Chinese is written as it is written, and on copying the characters showin in the handout. Next week, you will move into writing with understanding.

Again, there are no classes on Friday. I will see you all on Monday.

Sam signs in. She has no need for coffee today.

Anders has a definite need for coffee today, but he nods over at Sam anyway. "Hey, Carter."

"Hey, Anders. How're you?"

By way of an answer, he smiles sleepily and waves one of his cups of coffee at her. "Frakkin' exhausted, but good. You?"

"I'm good." She smiles. "Careful about all that coffee. People'll end up thinking you're Doctor Jackson."

"Oh, and congrats on the Pyramid thing. You must be really excited, huh?"

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He smiles and nods, and takes another gulp. "The coffee thing is Zero's fault and she admits it. As for the Pyramid thing, yeah. I'm gonna be worn out by the time the scouts get here, but training is good. It's great having Thrace around to train with, too. We tend to push each other more."

"I know exactly how that works. Unfortunately, my coffee addiction started long before I got here."

She nodded, remembering how many times she and Daniel had played off each other intellectually. "It's good that you have someone to challenge you--have you considered teaching other people to play? They might not be great at it, but they'd be other bodies in the way."

He nods back, and offers her a gumball. "Courtesy of the built-in gumball machine in my door, and Bridge, who put it there. Yeah, definitely. We've already had several people ask. Someday this week --" he grimaces -- " I'll get to the dean's office and get clearance for a team. MacGyver already agreed to sponsor it."

Re: Classics, 10/26

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam takes the gumball and begins chewing. "Thanks. Uh...why did Bridge install a gumball machine in your door, or is that a stupid question?"

"I didn't know Mac had done that. It's cool that he's sponsoring it and I'm sure he's not just doing it so other people can adore the mullet in a group setting."

Re: Classics, 10/26

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He grins. "He used a gumball machine as part of the new lock I asked him to install, and figured he might as well let it do its thing. It won't work for you if you don't have a code for the door, though. Also, he says it'll send anyone without a code through locker 327. Or the basement."

Gulping more coffee, he adds, "Yeah, I asked him in shop last week, since I wanted to know if we could use the Danger Shop to build some stuff for the court. He was cool about it and I don't think the mullet came up in the conversation anywhere."

"I'll have to stop by and see it sometime, if you don't mind," Sam said, laughing. She also made a mental note to talk to Bridge. Maybe he'd like to help out on the Jeep motor.

"What do you have to build? I'll be in there on Thursday afternoons generally, so I'm kind of happy about the idea of having company. He seems nice, so far."

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, sure, any time. Just don't touch it unless you want an unplanned trip. I guess that's what happens when Bridge gets his spare parts on campus." He doodles a little bit in his notebook and adds, "Nothing really fancy. Just a goal and some freestanding panels for the edges of the court. But they've gotta be sturdy."

"No touching the gumball machine door lock. Gotcha."

"Hmm. There's a junkyard in town where you may be able to get spare parts, if you're looking to throw something together."

Janet grins at Sam. "How's it going?"

"Good, thanks." She smiles, then leans over to whisper, "I seem to have a date for Thursday."

Janet absolutely cannot resist the urge to hug Sam in the middle of class. "And?" she asks.

Sam's a little surprised that Janet's hugged her in public, let alone in the middle of class, but whispers, "It's with Jack."

Janet presses her lips together and looks very, very amused. "Did you hear the radio last night?" she asks in a whisper. "God, that's great! Did you ask hm out? Did he ask you out?"

Re: Classics, 10/26

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, no, I fell asleep and missed the broadcast. Why?" She's a little wary of all the amusement on Janet's face. It doesn't usually bode well for her.

"I had to ask him out because if I waited for him I'd have been forty again...Janet, I don't know how it happened...one minute we were bickering, the way we always do, the next one I'd asked him out and he was stammering like an idiot."

She chuckled. "It was kind of cute. Except for the part where he took ages to reply. Then I kissed him. And we'll both remember it and there was no alien virus."

"Janet...there's nothing about a shot of Depo-Provera that would make me do something like that, right?" She asked, suddenly worried.

"You were mentioned," she says, trying not to snicker. "I was up late last night."

"Good for you. It's entirely possible." She grins again. "So you blurted it out and he mumbled and stammered? It's almost business as usual, then."

"It was I'm sure it was adorable. The phrase 'plutonium's got nothing on this guy' might be appropriate? You kissed him? And there's no way you'd have been exposed to an alien virus?" She tried to remember whether she kept a thermometer in her backpack these days.

Janet laughed. "No, Sam, a shot of Depo-Provera is not going to change your behavior in any way. You asked him out because you wanted to."

"I'm sorry...I was what? What'd the pirate...oh, please, Janet, tell me it was Barbossa, and not Ash...what'd he say?" Sam groaned, quietly.

They hadn't gone on their first date and they were already fodder for the gossip mill. If it went badly or he stood her up to go out with Teal'c, everyone would know.

"Damn it. I wanted to be able to keep this to ourselves and our select group of friends for a while."

"Thanks," she replied, blushing a little, "And yep, that's pretty much how things went. Unless you know something I don't, business as usual doesn't usually involve kissing."

She nodded, very sure on this point. "Yes, I kissed him. And as far as I know there was no alien virus but around this place, how can you be completely sure?."

"I was so impatient, Janet--it was like I couldn't stand there and be talking to him about something useless for another second. And I was a dork and just blurted it out without any finesse whatsoever and I shouldn't have had to ask."

"It was Barbossa, not Ash--thank God--and he was pretty nice about it. I don't remember exactly what he said, but I recorded last night's broadcast." Janet lost the grin in favor of a sympathetic look.

"In this school, I don't think it's easy to keep a secret." She pulled out a chocolate bar from her backpack and offered a piece to Sam. "Maybe nobody but our group of friends will pay attention?"

"I think it's sweet. That's why I said it was almost business as usual."

Janet grins very, very widely. "I think it's great. Let's just presume that since you're both acting normally, there's no alien virus."

"It's Jack. And you. I think you guys have gone long past finesse by now, so don't worry about it. Are you happy? Is he happy? The answer to the latter is yes, obviously, before you protest. No, you shouldn't have. But I'm glad you did."

Sam laid her head down on the desk and covered it with her arms. "Shoot me now, okay? But make it somewhere non-lethal so I can be better by Thursday."

She accepted the piece of chocolate and let it melt on her tongue. "Thanks." "Oh, sure, like no one paid attention to you and Daniel?"

She lifted her head and grinned. "Yeah, it really was sweet, if completely and totally high school. I'm happy. I think he's happy. It's just...wow, this is big, and there's so many ways this could go wrong, and we've waited for so long..."

"Help?" Sam's blue eyes were suddenly wide with panic.

"I can't shoot you. Weapons ban, remember?" Janet smiled sympathetically at her.

"No problem." "I try not to think about it."

Janet grinned while she was listening to Sam babble on about being happy and munched on a piece of chocolate.

"Any time, anything you need," said Janet gently, and with just a little bit of amusement in her voice. "You know that. What do you need?"

"Maybe if we went to the shooting range...and made it look like an accident?"

"A sedative? To not be a teenager? To have the goofy, giddy, stupid part over with? Pick one."
