Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 10]

The Danger Shop was set up like an open field, the kind you might find in several states in the mid-west or further south. It was fairly warm by Danger Shop normal temperature standards and the sky was grey. A storm seemed to be lingering somewhere, but wasn't here yet.

On the ground in front of the Doctor were what looked like large lunchboxes. They were not lunchboxes. They were too big for normal lunchboxes and had delicate electronic equipment inside. Since the lids were open, everyone could see that.

"What I'm about to tell you to do," the Doctor said by way of introduction, "should never be done in the real world without proper means of getting away very, very fast. Does that count as good enough of a warning? Yes? Good." He didn't listen to any actual answers to that question. "In three minutes, a rather large tornado is going to form over there." He pointed in the direction of a big red barn on the far side of the open field. "A tornado is-" He started, then stopped. "You'll find out soon enough. They are incredibly dangerous, can be very destructive, involve very high winds and one will probably kill you if you get in the way. Not in here though. All pretend in here. Your job is to get one of these packages as close to the tornado as possible in order to use the equipment inside to scan it to better understand it. Do this without getting sucked up into it or hit by debris. In the real world, you'd be dead. Here, you'll probably only have the wind knocked out of you. Probably. The other job is to experience what this planet's extreme weather can be like." He checked his watch again. "A minute and a half. You can team up if you'd like. Better think about a good place to start."

Clark knew tornadoes well. He'd practically flown into one to rip Lana out of her truck, after all. He worked on reminding himself this wasn't real and he didn't need to go into some protective state over his classmates.

That was going to be easier thought than done.

"This is insane," Peter declared. "This is beyond insane. We don't have any protective gear, and I'm pretty sure the people who actually try to monitor tornadoes stay in heavily reinforced vehicles when they do it."

He'd have said that, honesty day or not.

Kitty spent a lot of the lectures in this class wondering if the weekly scenarios were something she could get out of in real life thanks to her powers, or if she had to figure out a different way out. For instance, being intangible meant you couldn't get blown away, right? Right? Was she going to have to test that?

Bruce took some time during the lecture to consider how he would chase storms if that were his chosen profession. He eventually decided it would involve a well-protected vehicle of his personal design.

He didn't have the benefit of that right now, but at least he knew he wouldn't die here. That was something.

Jaime had actually been inside a typhoon once. That hadn't been very much fun at all. And from what he remembered, tornadoes were actually more powerful, even though they were much smaller.

Even with the Danger Shop protocols in place... he wasn't exactly looking forward to this.

Claudia picked up one of the kits and scanned the horizons, actually kind of excited about this one. The chance to check out a simulated tornado in a controlled environment? Hell yeah, she was there.

Even though the tornado wasn't real, Lindsay was still a bit nervous about it. She was also kind of excited, too. Though that was only because it was a simulation. No way she'd be in a situation like this otherwise.

There was definitely an easy way of doing this -- Raven could teleport herself to the tornado, drop the equipment, and teleport away. But after what Ben had said yesterday when she'd taken him inside her not dirty, she wasn't feeling very confident about her gifts.

As he trotted out to a good place for the kit in what he judged to be the tornado's likely path, Bruce kept three things in mind: the most direct path to shelter, the fact that he was a pretty fast runner, and that all of his pent up energy from this week so far might actually give him an advantage in getting away bscore getting swept away by the wind.

He'd meant what he told Peter -- he didn't care enough to risk his life, even in a simulated way.

If Kurt was thinking about the tornado and not dying he would TOTALLY not be thinking about all the girls in the class naked. TOTALLY.

So he picked up a box with his tail and scampered directly at the tornado on all fours.

I am somewhat terrified of tornadoes. They are scary, yo. Heads up about next week - the song says we do spiders. I promise not to link any pictures because hell if I'm going looking for them, but there will be encounters with the beasts. Possibly giant ones. We end up being chased a lot in this class I've noticed.
