Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 10]

The Danger Shop was set up like an open field, the kind you might find in several states in the mid-west or further south. It was fairly warm by Danger Shop normal temperature standards and the sky was grey. A storm seemed to be lingering somewhere, but wasn't here yet.

On the ground in front of the Doctor were what looked like large lunchboxes. They were not lunchboxes. They were too big for normal lunchboxes and had delicate electronic equipment inside. Since the lids were open, everyone could see that.

"What I'm about to tell you to do," the Doctor said by way of introduction, "should never be done in the real world without proper means of getting away very, very fast. Does that count as good enough of a warning? Yes? Good." He didn't listen to any actual answers to that question. "In three minutes, a rather large tornado is going to form over there." He pointed in the direction of a big red barn on the far side of the open field. "A tornado is-" He started, then stopped. "You'll find out soon enough. They are incredibly dangerous, can be very destructive, involve very high winds and one will probably kill you if you get in the way. Not in here though. All pretend in here. Your job is to get one of these packages as close to the tornado as possible in order to use the equipment inside to scan it to better understand it. Do this without getting sucked up into it or hit by debris. In the real world, you'd be dead. Here, you'll probably only have the wind knocked out of you. Probably. The other job is to experience what this planet's extreme weather can be like." He checked his watch again. "A minute and a half. You can team up if you'd like. Better think about a good place to start."

"We don't have much time before it gets here. We should probably come up with a plan quick..."

"The only plan I can think of is try not to die. Or get hit with fake debris," Lindsay replied, thinking it was kind of odd that she'd say it that way. "I would love to have super speed right about now."
weldedtomyspine: (facepalm)

"That would be pretty useful. Or maybe super-tornado-immunity." Which, Jaime had to admit, was a much less... conventional power.

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-10 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"A power like that would be useless otherwise," Lindsay added. "But it would make chasing tornadoes easier. And you wouldn't be accused of being dumb or crazy for doing so."
weldedtomyspine: (embarrassed laughq)

"Well, I get accused of being crazy for plenty of other reasons, so I suppose I won't really get too worried about it being for chasing tornadoes..." Jaime grinned. "I'm not crazy, though! In case you were worried!"

"Well I wasn't before," Lindsay replied, though she was grinning as she said it.

D'oh!

Jaime couldn't help but laugh. "Well, don't be now?" He sounded a bit too hopeful for that to be totally convincing.

"I think everyone here has to be a little crazy," Lindsay said with a smirk. "I mean, we're all still here despite everything, right?"
weldedtomyspine: (chortling)

"And we are in this class," Jaime added with a chuckle.

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly!" Lindsay nodded. "We get to do crazy things with no real risk. What's not to like about this class?"
weldedtomyspine: (oh so heroic)

Re: Tornado Chasing

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Nothing?" Jaime suggested, sounding only the slightest bit hesitant.

They were never going to come up with a plan, were they?

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
"That was my answer, too," Lindsay said. "Just like I've got nothing for how to get this assignment done. I'm not good at improvising unless math is involved."
weldedtomyspine: (a bit distracted)

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not good at improvising around giant storms unless I've got super powers..." Jaime frowned thoughtfully. "We could just wing it, I guess?"

Run around and try not to get hurt?

Re: Tornado Chasing

Lindsay shrugged. "Works for me. I mean, the worst that could happen is we fall down. Maybe in a funny manner so we can point and laugh at each other."

It could happen.
weldedtomyspine: (LOL)

Re: Tornado Chasing

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Worst that could happen?" Jaime asked with an amused smirk. "Or best?"

Because as long as he wasn't all alone in looking ridiculous, Jaime was totally down with pointing and laughing.

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Best, obviously," Lindsay said, laughing, despite the fact a giant tornado was forming.
weldedtomyspine: (Amused in blue)

Re: Tornado Chasing

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay, so here's my plan. We run toward the tornado and then one of us throws our thing as hard as they can, and the other just drops theirs in what we think the path will be, then we both take off."

How did that sound? Genius, right?

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds like a plan. My favorite part is the running away from it portion," Lindsay admitted.
weldedtomyspine: (embarrassed laughq)

Re: Tornado Chasing

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. I'm pretty proud of that bit." Jaime grinned. "And, of course, ladies first. I'll be right behind you."

He was also proud of that bit.

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I am just so appreciative," Lindsay smirked before running toward the tornado like a crazy person. It was windy and loud, so she blindly tossed the kit toward it and ran. She didn't care if the kit reached the proper destination.
weldedtomyspine: (facepalm)

Re: Tornado Chasing

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Jaime pounded after her and threw his own kit on the ground somewhat kind of close to where it looked like the tornado might go.

"Nice throw!" he yelled, but almost certainly not loud enough to be heard over the roaring of the wind. "Let's get out of here!" Also not loud enough to be heard, but... Lindsay knew the plan, right?

Re: Tornado Chasing

[identity profile] mathletenomore.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yes, Lindsay knew the plan. Run away from giant tornado was an easy instruction to remember.

"Wow, that was kind of a rush," she shouted as she ran for cover.
weldedtomyspine: (such a dork)

Re: Tornado Chasing

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you want to do it again?" Jaime yelled back, laughing like a maniac. Apparently he agreed about the rush bit.

"No thanks. Once was enough!" Still, once was pretty awesome.

[and I sleep now, night!]

[personal profile] weldedtomyspine 2010-11-11 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Jaime looked back at the storm, then over at Lindsay. Then he grinned.

"Okay. You've got a point."

[Sleep well!]
