Food Appreciation [Week 10, Period 4, Mon. 11/08]

Once again, the front of the classroom featured a table laden with a wide variety of foods and a teacher smiling at the class. "So, I was at the grocery this morning, thinking about class, and decided to see what we could do with the whole food as an aphrodisiac thing. You know, the idea that some foods make you feel sexier than others. Don't pretend you've never heard about this. Oysters have long been thought to be the perfect mood setters since Roman times. Just the aroma of an almond was said to jumpstart serious amounts of passion in females. I think now we all understand that weird Dutch love of marzipan now, hmm?" Or maybe not. He was no expert. "What I want you guys to do is give a few of these foods a try - maybe the avocado or the figs or a little pineapple or banana with chocolate syrup - and see if you feel any different."

John paused. "No promises and no making out in class if it does work. You all have rooms and it's not like they're far away."

No. No, it most certainly was not. And Ariel made that very clear with her arms crossed over her chest and a very particular look.

"Of course they're not more important," she said. Even as a mermaid, she wanted to be human, after all, so duh. "I just don't like eating fish. So what?"

"Just kind of the opposite of most weird vegetarians, that's all," Peter said. "You know, the ones that can't eat a cow but will happily eat a flounder or a tuna. Just kind of curious."

If Ariel's face seemed to turn a little green at Peter's particular fish choices, well, that was because it did.

The conversation was doing wonders for keeping her mind off of how she couldn't wait for her date with Bruce tonight, though.

"I just really like marine life. I might become a marine biologist."

And, thank you, Bruce, for that convenient phrase.

Peter just chuckled and shook his head. "Well, it's a good profession. I always liked the manatee, myself. Most regal of all sealife."

Ariel's eyes narrowed slightly, determined not to fall into the trap of revealing how confusing it was that sailors used to mistake them for mermaids. She just did not see it, at all.

"I like dolphins," she offered instead. "They're very intelligent."

"I'll give you that," Peter said. "Ever talk with one?"

He was just gonna try that, see what happened.

"It takes a lot of learning and interaction to understand dolphin talk," Ariel offered, figuring that was fairly neutral. "But they have their own language and everything, that's how smart they are."

"I don't know if I trust them," Peter said. "You're always seeing them hanging out with nefarious porpoises."

There was a slight pause.

"Even I think that's a terrible pun, Peter," Ariel said.

Or tried to say, but it was interrupted by something that sounded an awful lot like the sort of snort, followed by a cough, which was not at all from trying not to laugh, really.

"I rest my case," Peter said, giving Ariel a smug smile.

"That's not fair!" Ariel argued, though that meant the laugh was getting out.

"Much like how pretty you are isn't fair," Peter said.

Oops, where'd that come from?

That...did seem to come out of nowhere, but it was much more preferable to comments that tried to hint at her being a mermaid. Ariel straightened slightly, smiling.

"Well, that I can't help," she said. "You can help horrible puns. Butyou think I'm pretty?"

"Please, you've got hair that some people would mug a nun for," Peter said. "It's impossible to stay mad at you, looking like that."

Ariel didn't even know what 'mug a nun' meant, but it still made her giggle.

And flip her hair a bit for emphasis. "Salt water's the secret," she offered. "It gives it an extra shine."
