Jono was in the library. And, fortunately for Jono, the library had decided that it was going to behave itself today while he was in. Because Heaven only knew that he would have had a Hell of a time trying to explain something like tap-dancing periodicals to the visiting normals with only the benefit of some very creative charades, and a Speak'n'Spell.

... Look, if the squirrels were going to shove the blasted thing at him, he was going to make use of it.

The hippopotamus goes, "Hruuugh!"

As ridiculous as it was.

//It really does help that Mr. DeTamble isn't half as insufferable as some of the other faculty,// Jono offered, continuing on that half-full streak of his. //He's really not a bad chap to work for, when you get down to it.//

Also, he liked good music. Very helpful when it came to giving Jono basis for judgment.

"And the compliments keep coming," Henry observed, snorting a little. "Thanks, Jono. I don't totally hate seeing you in the library, either."

"He's a total slob, though," Clare offered in a stage whisper to Jono, exaggeratedly rolling her eyes. "But yeah, when you come down to it, I guess he's all right."

See, Jono could totally tell why Henry liked her so much. He laughed a little, more going through the motions than actually bothering to project anything, and gave his head a bemused shake.

//At least this isn't a terrible job for we slobs,// he offered. //It's usually slow enough that we can fake being hard at work whenever somebody comes in, and generally get away with it.//

Jonothon's great secret, revealed.

"And now, 15 years later, Clare figures out how I chose my career," Henry laughed. "It's all right, though. She's an artist. By definition, she only has to work when she's inspired."

He said this with utter love and respect underneath the banter.

"I get to spend the rest of my time eating bon-bons and watching soaps," Clare said, keeping her face straight for a moment before bursting into laughter. "Have you been going to school here long, Jono? It seems like a really...unique, opportunity."

She wished Henry had had a place like this, when he was younger. It was good he had it in middle age, but in teenagehood it would have been a lifesaver.

//A bit over a year now,// Jono agreed, nodding faintly. //And I suppose unique is a good word for it.//

He paused for a moment, considering.

//No, unique is th'perfect word for it. I'd been going to another school before this one, but it was a bit more... choosy when it came to students. Here, there really isn't anybody who doesn't fit in. No matter how hard one might try.//

"It's the weird kids from a hundred schools in fifty different universes," Henry said, with a glance to Clare. He'd had the same thought -- this would have been heaven when he was 15. Perhaps when Alba was older, if there wasn't a cure yet...

"It's almost amazing things are peaceful as often as they are."

"Something to consider for...twelve years or so from now," she said, with a slanted look his way.

Not that she wanted to send Alba away. But if elementary school ended up being torturous for her, or there wasn't a cure by then.

"But it's not always peaceful, is it?" she asked, since she was positive that this kind of place was hardly always the safe haven it seemed.

//That... depends on th'sort of peace yer looking for,// Jono admitted. At least he was honest, right? //I can't speak for anybody else. I really can't. But I'd take the occasional row here over th'way things are back where I came from any day.//

... So... you know. London.

//Fandom is a good place for people who don't belong anywhere else. That much, I can say. And overall... Safer, as well.//

Except for the occasional hiccup, naturally.
