Library [09/19]

Today, Jonothon could already tell, was going to be one of those days in the library.

Not really a bad one, no. Just a weird one. And not in really big, terrible ways, either. Just in subtle, strange ones. Or, rather, one subtle, strange one in particular.

//I put you away. I've put you away twelve times. And I know we bloody well don't have that many copies of you.//

The book sat there, innocently. Watching. Waiting.

Jonothon shook his head and walked away. Ten minutes later, when he looked again, the book wasn't there. No, it was perched happily in his seat, instead.

//I hate you.//

The library is, of course, open.

If you don't want to be stalked by Giraffes? Giraffes!, of course.

Who is wondering if perhaps duct-taping the book to the shelf will get it to stay put.

... He doubts it.

When he pings in!

We are here to learn about giraffes, or GIRAFFES. Giraffes are animals, sometimes known as aminals. A definition: Aminal (optional: animal): a being or creature that walks or flies or eats food. Aminals usually inhabit the Earth, roaming and looking at this and that and chewing cud or gum, but can sometimes inhabit your body cavities, where it is dark.

Someday I will own this book. In the meantime, I'll be amused that there's also a band by the same name, that is described on Wikia as "math rock with a touch of free jazz." And I like their sound, even.

John had debated coming here. He really had.

But, he supposed, it was part of his responsibilities to make up for any damage Sherlock caused, and so, at a decent hour of the morning, he was there.

Looking just a little bit lost. "Excuse me?"

Ariel knew she didn't have much time; she was on her way to her detention for stea--borrowing that carburetor with William, but she was in such a wonderful mood that she'd gone around all morning, humming and singing and dancing and somehow procuring a lot of pretty flowers. And she was passing by the library, so why not? Jono totally deserved a flower.

"Good morning, Jono!" She all but sang as she slipped in and found him, and then went to slide the flower behind his ear and give him a kiss on the sort-of cheek. "I hope you have a wonderful day! I'm off to detention now, bye!"

And, with that done, she turned around, singing and humming on her way out.

Hey, a person. Another new face, at that. Though Jono couldn't help but note that the voice, at least, sounded vaguely familiar. He glanced up from where he was standing, tabling the firm scolding that be was about to give to the book that was still following him about.

//...Yes? Need help with something?//

... Well, that was terribly unexpected, right there.

Once he was finished with the initial bout of oh God lips too close to my face panic, Jono stared after Ariel as she flitted off once again, raising a hand and pulling the flower out from behind his ear to inspect it.

... What the hell had brought that on?

John may have startled at that, if it wasn't for his pride in the state of his upper lip, and the fact that he was forewarned. As it was, he thought to himself, at least talking-in-his-head was in no way more insane than flying piranhas.

"Jonothon, I presume?" he said instead, smiling... incrimentally at the boy.

It was going to drive him insane until he could place the voice. It really was.

Jono gave John a wary, sideways sort of look, and then he nodded a bit.

//That would be me, yes.//

His reputation, apparently, preceded him. He wasn't certain what to make of that fact, really.

"I'm John Watson," he offered, just in case Jono was about to take him for some kind of library-loitering lunatic. (That was Sherlock, not John, thank you.) John's offer also came with an extended hand. "We've spoken over the phone?"

//In a manner of speaking, I suppose,// Jono agreed, looking at John's hand thoughtfully for a moment before shrugging and accepting the handshake.

He'd tapped the receiver, John had spoken. Close enough.

//Is there anything I can do for you?//

"I... just felt I should come by and apologise in person, as it were," John said, which was very easy shorthand for Where you can actually talk back to me because last time was a little odd, "And make sure Sherlock wasn't coming at you with questions again."

A slight narrowing of his eyes probably managed to display well enough just what it was that Jono thought of Sherlock's coming at him with questions.

//Mm. Questions like 'what am I thinking right now,' and 'did the telepathy come before or after you lost yer jaw?'// Totally not a sore point, that. Not at all. //Look, mate, I appreciate yer comin' here to apologize, but it doesn't really... undo any of that.//

"Of course it doesn't," John said, very, very lightly. "Nothing ever gets undone, does it?"

//Unfortunately.// Jono crossed his arms and gave his head a shake. //He's been spoken to, you know. By th'librarian already. Has a way of just ignoring things that threaten to get between himself and his answers. Right stubborn bloody sod, he is.//

Which, he supposed, was why he was Sherlock Holmes.

Plonker.

"He is, he really is, I can attest to that," John agreed, nodding. Quirking a smile that might be polite, or might be genuine, or might just be a mix of the two. "But 'nothing gets undone' isn't really a reason not to do something," he added. "So I thought I would. Might do a little good."

More of a quirk.

Raven was doing a check on her friends to make sure none of them were suffering from zombie piranha bites, and Jono was at the top of the list. "Good morning, Jono," she said. "How are you?"

//Well then... Thank you,// Jono settled on, realizing that he was just a bit put-off by anybody apologizing over that sort of thing at all. //I don't suppose there's much that can be done about that curiosity of his, at any rate. But an apology... that's... nice.//

Weird. Very weird. But nice.

//Haven't been given any reason to complain just yet,// Jono decided, giving Giraffes? Giraffes! a bit of a warning glance. He wouldn't hesitate to stick it in a drawer and lock it there, at this rate. //But th'day isn't over, either. How're you, luv?//

"Phone me if he turns up again," John advised. "Though I doubt he will. He's been..." Definitely a smile, there, both fond and frustrated. "...bored, but I don't think it's going to last."

"You were not injured at all by the piranha?" Raven said, doing a quick empathic check. "I found them most distressing, and Karla wishes to forbid me to absorb any such things into my Soul-Self anymore."

//Can't phone,// Jono replied, projecting a bit of a sigh to go along with that. //No mouth. You don't mind a text instead, I hope?//

It was about all that he could manage. And, truth be told, Jono wasn't particularly good at texting, either. Bah, technology.

"Right, sorry," he said, politely. "A text will be more than fine."

//I took it easy that day,// Jono admitted, shrugging a little. //Stayed indoors. There are too many new people about for me to risk distracting anyone while there are undead fish with ridiculously sharp teeth flying about.//

The things that this place made him say...

... Weren't much different from the things that the place he had come from sometimes made him say, too, granted.

//You... absorbed them?//

He was trying to picture that. It was hurting his head a little.
