Library [09/19]

Today, Jonothon could already tell, was going to be one of those days in the library.

Not really a bad one, no. Just a weird one. And not in really big, terrible ways, either. Just in subtle, strange ones. Or, rather, one subtle, strange one in particular.

//I put you away. I've put you away twelve times. And I know we bloody well don't have that many copies of you.//

The book sat there, innocently. Watching. Waiting.

Jonothon shook his head and walked away. Ten minutes later, when he looked again, the book wasn't there. No, it was perched happily in his seat, instead.

//I hate you.//

The library is, of course, open.

Raven was doing a check on her friends to make sure none of them were suffering from zombie piranha bites, and Jono was at the top of the list. "Good morning, Jono," she said. "How are you?"

//Haven't been given any reason to complain just yet,// Jono decided, giving Giraffes? Giraffes! a bit of a warning glance. He wouldn't hesitate to stick it in a drawer and lock it there, at this rate. //But th'day isn't over, either. How're you, luv?//

"You were not injured at all by the piranha?" Raven said, doing a quick empathic check. "I found them most distressing, and Karla wishes to forbid me to absorb any such things into my Soul-Self anymore."

//I took it easy that day,// Jono admitted, shrugging a little. //Stayed indoors. There are too many new people about for me to risk distracting anyone while there are undead fish with ridiculously sharp teeth flying about.//

The things that this place made him say...

... Weren't much different from the things that the place he had come from sometimes made him say, too, granted.

//You... absorbed them?//

He was trying to picture that. It was hurting his head a little.

"With my Soul-Self," Raven explained. "I was attacked as I was out walking, so I took them into the netherverse to protect myself." She frowned at the thought of what had happened. "They must have turned upon one another inside me, for they became zombie creatures, and the unlife inside me made me feel ill until I expelled them."

//The unlife inside you,// Jono echoed, squinting one eye a little as he tried to picture that. It was quickly becoming apparent that not thinking about it was probably the best way to go about this. //Yes, I can... almost imagine how that might get a little uncomfortable.//

And also pretty disgusting.

"If nothing else it is lesson that should not attempt to take something inside me for very long," Raven said. She'd been plenty disgusted herself when the zombie fish came flying out of her. Unclean didn't begin to describe how she'd felt. "The netherverse is vast, but my soul is connected to it."

Jono nodded a bit, picking through that and trying to find aspects of it that made some bit of sense to him. Netherverse, attached to Raven's soul. Soul Self. Right. Some more nodding.

//It's probably for th'best that you don't go sucking things in without knowing what they'll do to you, yes,// he settled on. //Yer alright now, though?//

Don't try to make sense of it, Jono. It didn't make sense much even to Raven.

"I am fine, yes," Raven said, nodding. "And glad those fish are gone. I have been making certain that no one has suffered any lingering harm due to their bites."

//Well, you don't have to worry about me, then,// Jono replied, shrugging lightly. //I stayed in out of it. Didn't get bitten at all.//

He didn't have classes to go to, and didn't need to eat. There weren't many reasons for him to go outside when there were man-eating fish coming back from the dead. And so he'd stayed in his room, played his guitar, and tried to ignore the weird, slimy feeling that the fish had left somewhere in the back of his psionic senses.

//Other people seemed to be handling it well enough,// he added.

"I always worry about you, Jono," Raven said with a small smile. "I worry about all my friends. But I am pleased you were not injured at all. How have you been otherwise?" She hoped that teacher hadn't been harassing him again. She still had a scolding to delivery.

//... Otherwise?// he tilted his head slightly to the side, and then shrugged his shoulders a bit. //Not too bad, I suppose. Slowly dragging people into some mad scheme of Rinoa's to put on a musical performance set for November fifth.//

He still really didn't know quite what to make of that, no.

//It's been... suitably distracting.//

Distraction was good, very good. "A performance?" Raven said, her smile growing. "You will be playing? Then I will surely be there to hear you."

So help him, Jono was feeling kind of pleased with himself, seeing that smile of hers grow.

//I'd appreciate that,// he decided. //Really, my preference would be to see nobody in th'crowd at all. Lower expectations that way. But I suppose if there must be an audience, one full of friendly faces is definitely th'way to go.//

Most of that was him joking. Probably.

"Jono," Raven scolded affectionately. "I have heard you play, and you do so very well. I am certain anyone who comes to listen will count themselves fortunate for the opportunity."

That was a smile, there. She'd managed to pull one out of him again, for all the effort that went into making one at all.

//Well, then I definitely don't want to disappoint,// he decided.

[... Wow. It helps when I hit send.]

"Who else will be performing?" Raven asked. "Will you all be doing so together, or will there be different acts? What type of music will you play?" Why yes, she was terribly full of questions.

//Uhm.// Jono knew the answers! He really did! //So far, th'band is Christian, Peter, and myself for certain. I have to talk to George about drums, and I think Ino might be willing to do backup vocals, if she can get around her pride for it. I might ask Ariel, as well.//

The girl had a voice on her like a siren.

//We'll all be playing at once, but somebody might get a solo here or there if they want, I suppose. If another band steps up and wants a turn, I don't see why not. And we play... Anything, I suppose. Everyone in th'band so far has fairly varied tastes.//

"May the audience make requests?" Raven teased gently. She might have one or two songs in mind.

//If the audience is willing to forgive th'band for not necessarily knowing th'songs,// Jono decided, his tone suggesting that there was a chuckle resting behind those words. //Unless you wanted to make those requests now, so that I can be certain that they know them in time.//

There was... a month and some change left. More than enough time to kick people's behinds into gear. Provided he could get himself into gear, first. Maybe.

"I already know you know it," Raven said. "The song you made my theme song. 'Broken' I believe it was called? I would like to hear you play it again. Do you think the others could learn?"

//I think that could probably be arranged,// Jonothon decided. He had no idea if the male vocals were anything remotely within Christian's range, but he was willing to find out. //You liked it that much, did you?//

"I did, yes," Raven said. "I liked it, and since you picked it, it is special to me. I would enjoy hearing it performed."

Raven could possibly be accused of laying it on too thick -- if she wasn't so sincere.

Well, it was a little thick, perhaps, but Jono wasn't about to complain, either. A little sincerity went a long way.

//Well... Then you'll hear it. One way or another.//
