Library [09/19]

Today, Jonothon could already tell, was going to be one of those days in the library.

Not really a bad one, no. Just a weird one. And not in really big, terrible ways, either. Just in subtle, strange ones. Or, rather, one subtle, strange one in particular.

//I put you away. I've put you away twelve times. And I know we bloody well don't have that many copies of you.//

The book sat there, innocently. Watching. Waiting.

Jonothon shook his head and walked away. Ten minutes later, when he looked again, the book wasn't there. No, it was perched happily in his seat, instead.

//I hate you.//

The library is, of course, open.

A slight narrowing of his eyes probably managed to display well enough just what it was that Jono thought of Sherlock's coming at him with questions.

//Mm. Questions like 'what am I thinking right now,' and 'did the telepathy come before or after you lost yer jaw?'// Totally not a sore point, that. Not at all. //Look, mate, I appreciate yer comin' here to apologize, but it doesn't really... undo any of that.//

"Of course it doesn't," John said, very, very lightly. "Nothing ever gets undone, does it?"

//Unfortunately.// Jono crossed his arms and gave his head a shake. //He's been spoken to, you know. By th'librarian already. Has a way of just ignoring things that threaten to get between himself and his answers. Right stubborn bloody sod, he is.//

Which, he supposed, was why he was Sherlock Holmes.

Plonker.

"He is, he really is, I can attest to that," John agreed, nodding. Quirking a smile that might be polite, or might be genuine, or might just be a mix of the two. "But 'nothing gets undone' isn't really a reason not to do something," he added. "So I thought I would. Might do a little good."

More of a quirk.

//Well then... Thank you,// Jono settled on, realizing that he was just a bit put-off by anybody apologizing over that sort of thing at all. //I don't suppose there's much that can be done about that curiosity of his, at any rate. But an apology... that's... nice.//

Weird. Very weird. But nice.

"Phone me if he turns up again," John advised. "Though I doubt he will. He's been..." Definitely a smile, there, both fond and frustrated. "...bored, but I don't think it's going to last."

//Can't phone,// Jono replied, projecting a bit of a sigh to go along with that. //No mouth. You don't mind a text instead, I hope?//

It was about all that he could manage. And, truth be told, Jono wasn't particularly good at texting, either. Bah, technology.

"Right, sorry," he said, politely. "A text will be more than fine."

Jono considered that for a moment, and then he shrugged and pulled out his phone, holding it toward John.

//Need yer... number, whatever, for that,// he noted. //So you just... took it upon yerself to apologize? For what he said? I take it you end up doing that sort of thing often?//

And also picking up milk. There was a smirk in there somewhere.

He took the phone, poking at the keys. At least he wasn't at war with this particular brand of technology. "Not that often," John replied, as he worked. "Often enough, I suppose. Someone has to look after him."

And that also involved making sure no one wound up trying to kill him, and taking care of the worst of the debris.

Well, Jono certainly wasn't about to kill him, but he wouldn't be terribly opposed to the opportunity to cold-cock him, either.

//He doesn't seem terribly keen on taking care of himself, no,// he mused, shaking his head a bit. //He's a bit of a sociopath, at best.//

Jono meant that in the nicest way, really. He wanted to punch him in the face, but at the same time, he was Sherlock bloody Holmes. He was still a bit at sea about that one.

"Yes," John said, simply, with a smile that said everything, really: exasperation and fondness and irritation and the whole lot. "It's especially annoying when he forgets to eat. But-- well. That's hardly important."

//No, I suppose not.// Jono held his hand out for his phone back, raising an eyebrow. //So, that's it, then? He's done his damage, he's found something else that's shiny to move on to and poke at, that's that until the next time he needs to look something up?//

John slapped Jono's phone back into his palm. "Yes," he said, infusing the word with some dry humor. "And I go back to convincing him it's a bad idea to break into a Baltimore police station simply to get a look at their cold cases."

//Well, best of luck then,// Jono replied, glancing down at his phone for a moment before pocketing it again. //I suppose you'll be in need of it.//

"I manage," John said, mouth setting into something amused and self-deprecating. "Have a nice day."

And with that, he began to walk towards the door once more.
