Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

"I'm guessing that's not a compliment," George said. Oooh, hot guy. Which meant she should be trying to flirt, or ... something? But she sucked at it. So instead she said, "George. Bored. You?"

"Just got here," she confirmed. "On that ... shuttle thing."

She leaned back with a sigh. "Did you plan on coming here? Or did it just sort of ... happen?"

"How do you accidentally get enrolled in high school?" he asked. That was a yes to the planning. "Get on the wrong bus?"

"No, I ..." Received orders from Rube, who got them from his boss, who might or might not be Death? Right. "... just ... didn't expect it."

Shit. "It's a long story?" she said. "Why'd you enroll if you're not sure about it?"

Jack took that to mean an unexpected transfer. "My brother got a scholarship, only he couldn't go if I didn't. He's persuasive sometimes. School's school, so it doesn't matter, it just blows leaving my friends behind and having to start over."

"That part always sucks," she sympathized. "Then you have to try to make new friends, but that's ... I mean, what, you just go up to people all, 'Hi, let's find stupid bullshit in common'?"

Jack laughed. "If you could made braids out of this," he ran a hand through his short hair, "I'd be impressed. They'd probably still stick straight up. Since we're going to be friends and all," Jack added, keeping a mostly serious expression, "should we swap friendship bracelets?"

"I was thinking those necklaces that had two parts on them," she laughed. "'Bee fri' on the left and 'stuh ends' on the right. Unless you're too manly for 'stuh ends.'"

"So, Jack," she said, enjoying herself entirely too much, "what is it you usually do when you're not being deathly bored at picnics?"

"I used to work for my friend's dad some nights and weekends. Run. I was on the track team at my old school for a while. Hang out with friends. You know, usual stuff. What about you?"

Got killed by a toilet seat. Take souls. Stole an apartment from a dead guy. Totally normal teenage stuff.

"Temp work mostly," she said. "I'm not a big ... joiner, so I was never in any clubs or anything. I alienate people and antagonize my mother, but that doesn't take much of my day."
