Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

Jack smiled. "It's working so far."

She actually cracked a smile at that.

"Are we besties now?" she asked. "Wanna gossip about cute guys?"

(SO SORRY. Linkdropping zomg o.o)

"Maybe we could do each others' hair instead," Jack grinned.

"You'd look good with braids," George decided. Okay, maybe she was flirting. So? "They'd have to be teeny ones."

(finished woooo! and now for the liquor!)

Jack laughed. "If you could made braids out of this," he ran a hand through his short hair, "I'd be impressed. They'd probably still stick straight up. Since we're going to be friends and all," Jack added, keeping a mostly serious expression, "should we swap friendship bracelets?"

"I was thinking those necklaces that had two parts on them," she laughed. "'Bee fri' on the left and 'stuh ends' on the right. Unless you're too manly for 'stuh ends.'"

"Jewelery declaring our friendship doesn't really seem like it'll let me give a good first impression with the guys."

"That's what the braids are for," George teased. "You'll be turning heads in no time."

"Ahh," he nodded in understanding, then gave her a lopsided grin. "Now that's a first impression."

"So, Jack," she said, enjoying herself entirely too much, "what is it you usually do when you're not being deathly bored at picnics?"

"I used to work for my friend's dad some nights and weekends. Run. I was on the track team at my old school for a while. Hang out with friends. You know, usual stuff. What about you?"

Got killed by a toilet seat. Take souls. Stole an apartment from a dead guy. Totally normal teenage stuff.

"Temp work mostly," she said. "I'm not a big ... joiner, so I was never in any clubs or anything. I alienate people and antagonize my mother, but that doesn't take much of my day."

"No wonder you're so bored."

George resisted the urge to stick her tongue out at him.

"Did you expect me to be a cheerleader?" she asked.

"Not exactly," Jack replied diplomatically. "German club maybe? Choir?"

George tried thinking back. Something. Anything.

"I took ... swimming lessons?"

When she was, like, ten.

"Being on an island," Jack said with a straight face, "that's probably a good thing."

There was only one possible response to that. And that was, to ball up her napkin and throw it at his head.

"Hey! Is that any way to treat your new best friend? Aw." He tilted his head and looked nostalgic. "Our first fight."

"I think this is where I'm supposed to decide I'm Not Talking to you, so I go and find someone else to tell you that," George laughed.

The rules of little-girl friendships were bizarre.

"Can we use the same person as our interpreter or do we have to get separate friends to translate for us?"

"Too much risk of cootie-contamination," George said. "Besides, the more people we can pull into our stupid, pointless drama, the better."

"I'm going to need some time to rally together some friends so I can tell them how horrible you are."

"I'm going to need ... to ... make friends," George admitted. "This might take a while."

"I've met maybe six people today. You're not alone there. What do you think? Put off our feud until we have enough friends to make it worthwhile?"
