"Good morning," said Janet, not sounding at all cheerful as she walked in the door. "Parker's in the clinic for the next four days. I've got a note from the doctor there." She let her backpack down gently onto the floor behind the desk, pulled out a note, and handed it to Professor Methos. "Bets on how long it takes for someone to ask to be let into Special Collections?"
"Parker's in the clinic? What happened? Did a small blond Immortal kid knock her down, oh noes! And no bets."
"Teacher-sanctioned abuse," she said tightly. "I'm assuming you heard about our Ethics teacher's little assignment of master and slave?" Janet resisted the urge to slam a stack of books on the counter and set them down very, very gently. "Parker was assigned to be someone's 'slave' for sixteen hours. Given Parker's little temper problem, diet factors, and the fact that she was assigned to a 'master' she didn't like, her ulcer ruptured."
Janet's eyes were hard. "If anyone had thought to look, there are psych studies that show why that class exercise was a bad idea."

"No," Methos said quietly. "I hadn't heard." He closed his eyes tightly for a few moments. "Gods," he swore. "Depending on which way she was running the experiment... I would have assumed it would have behooved her to make sure that the people in the dominant position were liked and trusted by the people in the subservient." Methos opened his eyes. "Wait, aren't you in that class with Parker?"
[The Doctor wanders in at some point during the morning. There was either going to be a run on Special Collections or a massive sense of apathy on behalf of the student body. Either way, he would be amused.

A week or two ago, I applied for a library card. [slightly self-depricating yet winning smile] And I completely forgot--I never got around to actually picking it up.
*grins back* And you've yet to visit the library this term? For anything other than zombie-killing purposes, that is. *Methos begins to rummage* Somewhere around here are the cards...
I've not had much reason to,.as of yet, have a large collection of my own. [The Doctor watches Methos' back, still smiling.] Though considering my reasons for coming in to date have all involved defensive mechanisms...are you sure you don't have a Secret Lair somewhere underneath Special Collections?
Janet watches him, wondering if he's ever handed out a library card. She could tell the professor where they are, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

I have no bloody idea what's below Special Collections. Given that the last time I went in there the walls were painted with dancing pink elephants -- and they were actually dancing, mind you -- I'm not sure I want to know.
*rummages some more* Janet, where on earth do you hide the library cards?Figures that the only one I could find on my own was the one I gave to Angelus.

[The Doctor smirks and lightly drums his fingers on the desktop as he watches Methos dig for the library cards. He's enjoying this far too much.] Pink elephants...well, I suppose you could work with that decor, given time.
"I refused to participate in the assignment," said Janet, smiling, but somewhat viciously. "She was making a number of pro-slavery arguments to a friend in the class. I was uncomfortable with the issue of miming out slavery for playtime. I mentioned something about this uncomfortable issue with possession a few weeks ago, but apparently that's a totally different issue when your body's out of your control and slavery's really actually better than freedom for some people."
((It might be one of the primary activities of the library assistants too, you know. *snickers*))

Janet smirks, goes over to the drawer Methos is looking in, and pulls out a library card for the Doctor. "Here you go," she says, holding the library card out to Methos. "Now, who's your favorite library assistant?"
"There's a difference between subserviance and slavery. Gods." Methos sighed deeply. He looked very shaken. "This is Professor Maclay, right? I've barely had a chance to meet her."
"You are, Janet. What would I do without you? Oh, yes, end up in a huddled ball on the floor of the library, surrounded by unfilled applications, rocking." Methos grins at her.
Lee walks in and looks for a librarian to help him.
[and one pops up] Can I help you?
"Oh, I'm well aware of that fact," said Janet. "Professor Maclay, yes." She noticed Methos' expression and reined in her urge to continue complaining. "Are you okay?"
"I know," says Janet, laughing as she hands him the Doctor's library card.
[The mental image makes the Doctor smirk. He watches them, waiting.]
